Chapter 1

An age-long war between our races was finally here. Nephalems and demigods have been at war for centuries. My rival and I were finally going to end it. I will not let them get the best of me. Lucian stands across from me, scythe drawn. Demons are cheering his name. Angels and demons are chanting my name. I transformed into my angelic form. My dress is becoming just a piece of white cloth covering my private parts and draping over my shoulders. A gold diamond-shaped crystal is forming on my forehead. I use my powers, casting a bright white light that dissipated into my sword. I enchant my sword with a holy blessing. I look to see the smirk on his face. He swings his scythe over his shoulder and cracks his neck.

Lucian: Ready to end this, Alessia.

Me: Of course.

He vanishes into a puff of black smoke. I sprout my wings, flying into the air. I survey the ground. He reappears just as I’m about to charge in. I’m hit in the back with his scythe. I hit the ground with a thud. There are two of him on the ground, and then they fuse into one.

Lucian: Gotta be better than that.

I should have known he would use his ability to disappear and clone. I stand up and wipe the dust off. His weapons have changed; now he wields a sword and shield. He charges at me, but I dodge and swing my own sword, aiming for him. He disappears before I can land a hit. I ascend again, shutting my eyes to heighten my senses. Focusing, I feel his movements. Flying higher, I sense him behind me, ready to strike. I rush downwards, slicing his back. He drops to the ground, touching the wound and discovering blood. He attempts to heal, but nothing happens.

Lucian: Oh, this is going to be fun.

He disappears. I keep my eyes closed in order to dodge his attacks. Suddenly, I feel surrounded. I open my eyes, and I’m standing in a circle full of Lucians. I swing my blade that sends out a holy wave, taking out some of the clones but not the real Lucian. A charge from behind sends me flying into a pillar. I can taste the blood in my mouth. I stand back up. The demons begin cheering for him.

Me: Your race is a disgrace. Can’t fight me like a real man. Oh, right, you’re only half a man.

Lucian: You bitch.

I wanted him to be provoked and come at me. I fly up, landing another slice on his back. He grimaced in pain. I float down and dissipate my wings. I drag my sword across the ground. He hurls a barrage of fireballs at me, only a few making real contact. The burns hurt. I use my power to recover from the burns.

Lucian: Wow. I love how you can heal, but I can’t.

Me: Maybe your dad should have fucked an angel.

Lucian: That’s really rich coming from the girl whose mom was an angel that WILLINGLY fucked a demon.

Me: Don’t speak about my mother and father!

Lucian: Hit a nerve, did I?

I want him angry enough to attack blindly. I summon a bow and start firing holy arrows, but each one vanishes into a black cloud of smoke. Suddenly, I feel a tap on my shoulder, and then his fist connects with my face. I wipe the blood from my mouth and ready my sword. We finally clash, but during the fight, his sword morphs into a spear, and he drives it into my shoulder. I collapse. He keeps attacking relentlessly, refusing to let me heal. Another barrage of fire bolts strikes, mostly catching me. I drop again, exhausted and nearly defeated. He laughs as I lie on the ground.

Lucian: Guess Demons are better.

Me: No... they aren’t!

I force myself to stand up, realizing that good isn’t triumphing over evil here. If I want to win, I need to transform, even if I hate using this form. I let my hatred rise. My skin turns red, black markings spreading across it. The white cloth wraps around my body, then ignites and burns away, revealing a skintight dress instead. My gold diamond-shaped crystal burns off my forehead, and two horns sprout from my head. I grow a tail. I feel exposed and vulnerable in demon form—honestly, in both forms.

Lucian: Now we’re talking. If we weren’t fighting, I’d totally have the hots for you.

Me: Keep up, if you can.

I disappear into smoke, reappearing behind him. I wrap my tail around his neck and fling him across the field. I poof again and give him a nice shadow blast to his back. Poof in front of him and give him another one. He falls down. A swift kick sends him flying into a pillar. I dash to where he is and pick him up using my tail. Repeatedly slamming him into the pillar before tossing him aside. I conjure clones, each sending a sharp kick from every direction at him. I pick up his scythe, ready to end this. As soon as I go to swing, it’s gone. It’s back in his hands before he slices me right across my stomach. Blood pouring out. Shit! I can’t heal like he can. I don’t have enough energy left in me to transform again. I have to do the best I can. I clone myself to give myself a bit of space before he swings again. Stupid demon form. It’s not as strong as his, but it is quicker. However, in this state, I don’t have the strength to do anything crazy. Then it hits me. I can charm, but I need to get close enough. With everything I have left, I summon all the clones I can. He starts slashing through them. I only have one chance at this.

Lucian: Stop hiding, Alessia.

I signal for my clones to close in, circling around Lucian. Disgust wells up at what I’m about to do, but it’s now or never. I teleport directly in front of him and kiss him. He freezes mid-attack. I separate, fusing the clones into one form, and back away in case it doesn’t work. He starts following me, indicating success. I stretch out my hand, and he gives me his scythe without protest. Seizing the opportunity, I slash his chest multiple times. He collapses, bleeding everywhere. I won.

Demon: Cheater!

Demon 2: Charm is not allowed.

Angel: Says who!

Angel 2: End his miserable existence.

I raise the scythe and swing down, which only takes off a piece of Lucian’s horn before I’m tossed into a pillar that comes crashing down on me. There’s a demon holding Lucian in their arms. I charge in again when all the demons start interfering. The angels and demons that are here for me do the same. Before I know it, they are all fighting each other. Bodies just dropping. I stumble back to my feet. I drag myself to Lucian. Shooting a blast each time, only for it to be deflected.

Demon: Have you no shame?

There’s a hole forming under me. I try to move, but I’m stuck in place. What is this? No demon should have this power. I slowly start being pulled into it.

Me: Stop this!

Demon: It’s the only way to save him.

Me: Please stop!

It keeps pulling me in, and there’s nothing I can do. My vanishing isn’t working. Before I know it. I’m in a space of nothingness. Screaming for help. No one is answering me back. I shoot awake in my bed. I’ll never forget that day. That hole transported me to what I assume was the future or another world. Both our races were wiped out that day. I’ll make it right. When I see them again, I will kill them both.
