Chapter 1
Liang Xiuying sat high in the branches of an ancient willow tree, her back resting against its sturdy trunk. The tree, with its cascading leaves, provided the perfect cover for her stealthy presence, concealing her from the eyes of the Verdant Lotus Sect’s disciples below. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting soft shadows on her serene face. Her eyes were closed, but her mind was far from resting.
Using her Mind’s Eye, a rare and potent form of magic that allowed her to project her consciousness across distances, Xiuying was deep in the heart of the sect’s library pavilion. Her consciousness moved silently among the towering shelves, brushing against the spines of countless scrolls and ancient tomes. The library was a treasure trove of knowledge, guarded both physically and magically, but the barriers were of little consequence to her. She sought out the oldest, most obscure texts, the ones hidden in the darkest corners, where the most dangerous and forbidden secrets were kept.
She found one, an ancient manuscript bound in faded green silk, its edges frayed with age. The title was almost worn away, but Xiuying’s keen senses could make out the characters: The Ritual of Verdant Rebirth. Intrigued, she delved into its pages, her mind racing through the text, absorbing the ritual’s details—how it could enhance life force, mend even the most grievous wounds, and extend one’s lifespan. The ritual required rare ingredients and immense spiritual energy, but it was the knowledge itself that Xiuying sought, a piece of the puzzle she was slowly assembling.
As she continued her search, she felt a presence, a shift in the energy of the sect. Her focus moved, drawn by a delicate ripple in the spiritual flow. Her Mind’s Eye followed the sensation, leading her to the sect’s bathing area, where the warm waters of the sauna pools created a mist that danced in the air.
There, a lone figure moved gracefully among the steam. It was a young woman, her form partially concealed by the mist, but even in this ethereal setting, her beauty was undeniable. Long, dark hair cascaded down her back, and her skin, glistening with droplets of water, seemed to glow with an inner light. She moved with the elegance of a lotus flower, unhurried and serene, as if she were one with the waters around her.
Xiuying’s heart stirred, a rare sensation she had not expected. She had come to the Verdant Lotus Sect for knowledge, not for distraction. But as she watched the woman, a feeling she couldn’t quite place began to blossom within her. It was more than mere curiosity. There was something about this woman that captivated her, something beyond the physical beauty that so easily caught her eye.
The steam rose in delicate tendrils from the warm waters of the sauna pool, curling around the stone pillars and drifting through the air like soft whispers. The space was serene, filled only with the gentle lapping of water against the smooth marble edges and the distant chirping of birds. Mei Lin stood in the centre of the pool, the water reaching just above her waist, her skin glistening with moisture in the dim, ethereal light.
Xiuying’s Mind’s Eye remained fixed on her, following the slow, deliberate movements of the woman below. What had begun as a mere flicker of curiosity had now turned into a deep, almost hypnotic fascination. Mei Lin was utterly unaware of the eyes watching her, of the presence hidden in the ancient willow tree beyond the walls of the bathing area.
Mei Lin’s hands moved with graceful precision as she began to wash. Her slender fingers traced over her skin, gliding across her shoulders and down to her chest. She tilted her head back slightly, exposing the delicate curve of her neck as her hands travelled lower, cupping her breasts with a tender touch. She massaged the soapy water over her skin, her fingertips brushing against her smooth flesh, creating ripples in the water that seemed to mimic the slow, steady rhythm of her movements.
Her eyes were half-closed, her expression serene, as if she were lost in the warmth of the water and the comfort of solitude. Each motion was unhurried, a ritual of care and relaxation, as she continued to wash herself. Her hands moved to her neck, sliding over the damp skin, and down her arms, the water cascading off her fingertips in sparkling droplets.
To Xiuying, it was as if time had slowed, her senses entirely focused on Mei Lin’s every gesture. There was an artistry in the way Mei Lin moved, an unspoken elegance that captivated her in a way she hadn’t anticipated. The soft curves of her body, the way the light caught on her wet skin, the subtle arch of her back as she bent slightly to wash her legs, it was all mesmerising, drawing Xiuying in deeper, holding her spellbound.
The moment felt both endless and fleeting, a perfect harmony of beauty and tranquillity that she could have watched forever. But as Mei Lin finished washing, the spell began to break, giving way to something even more enchanting.
Mei Lin stepped out of the water, her movements fluid and graceful, like a dancer gliding through the air. She lifted one leg, then the other, her feet finding purchase on the cool stone floor. The water clung to her body in shimmering stream, sliding down her thighs, dripping from the ends of her long, dark hair. Her skin seemed to glow in the soft light, each drop of water catching the light like a tiny crystal.
She reached for a silk robe hanging nearby, her body still damp from the bath. The robe slid over her shoulders with a soft rustle, but before she covered herself completely, she paused, her gaze distant as she looked out across the mist-filled room. Mei Lin was still, her back turned to the world outside, unaware that she was being watched.
Xiuying’s breath caught in her throat as she took in the sight before her. Mei Lin, standing at the edge of the pool, radiated a quiet strength and purity that resonated deep within her. She wasn’t just beautiful, she was ethereal, a living embodiment of the tranquillity and power of the Verdant Lotus Sect.
It took every ounce of Xiuying’s willpower to pull her mind back to herself, to break the connection that had left her so consumed. She withdrew her Mind’s Eye from the scene, retreating back into her own body, but the image of Mei Lin lingered in her thoughts, vivid and unshakable.
For the second time in her life, Xiuying found herself caught between her mission and a feeling she couldn’t quite define, a pull towards someone she had never even met, but who had already begun to change something deep within her.
And she knew, with a certainty that surprised her, that she would not be able to simply walk away. This was the beginning of something new, something that would take her far beyond the boundaries of her original purpose.
