Chapter 1 - The Incident
August 1st 1975.
It was a regular, but slow, day in the bunker. The bunker was located underground in a small Canadian town, with its grey concrete walls and floors, along with those long lightbulbs that are usually located on the ceiling.
Inside, the soldiers did their daily routines, which mainly involved cleaning their weapons, scrubbing the floors, or soldiers switching out for each patrol.
Two soldiers were walking through one of the concrete hallways, and one of the soldiers was a new recruit, whose name was Scott. The other, called Kevin, was showing him the ropes of the bunker. After showing him a few of the rooms, they stop in front of a door.
“And as you see here, this is where the scientists do their tests. They also store some of their research here.” Kevin says as he waves a hand.
“What do you think they’re working on now?”
“I think it’s some sort of gas.”
A confused face appears on Scott’s face. “Why are they doing gas, of all things?”
“From what I was able to ask, it’s to mind control the enemy.” Kevin says as he shrugs his shoulders.
“What? How would they be able to get it to work?” Scott says as he turns to face Kevin.
“That’s why they’re doing tests. To get it to work.” Kevin says with a sarcastic tone.
“I see.” Scott mutters after a moment of silence out as they continue to walk forward.
They then continue to walk towards a room, which was full of various machines, and Kevin walks up to a marked item.
“See this? It’s what they’re working on.” Kevin says with a bored turn of his hand.
As Kevin slaps the container, he accidentally smacks the valve, causing it to turn. Some of the gas started to hiss out of the container as Kevin and Scott fall back, letting out bad coughing fits. As Scott was coughing, he accidentally falls back onto a control panel, causing it to glitch out.
“Crap! Go to the panel! I’ll take of the gas!” As Scott attempts to fix the panel, Kevin then manages to close the valve, and the gas quickly stops hissing. “Oh thank god.”
After quickly walking to Scott, he sees that Scott managed to fix the issue. Scott lets out a sigh of relief. “There we go.”
Scott then lets out a couple of bad coughs, and he can feel the gas burning in his throat and lungs. “Shit, I don’t feel so good.”
“...Maybe it’s best if we go to the break room.”
“Yeah. Let’s go.” After walking to the break room, an hour passes, and Dr. Hayes walks into the room with 3 other scientists. “Hopefully it works this time.”
If you were wondering, Dr Hayes was the lead scientist of the group, as he was the one that came up with the idea of the gas. They went up to the machine, and there was a glass separating the scientists from the other room. Dr. Hayes then pulls a lever, which releases gas from the lever.
As the gas seeps into the holding cells, nothing seems to happen at first. After about an hour, all of the test subjects then fell to the ground and they all began to convulse.
After about a minute, the they stopped convulsing, but not a single one managed to get back up.
After another few minutes, the subjects continued to lay there. “Damn it. More research then.” Dr. Hayes says with a sigh.
Just as Dr. Hayes was about to leave the room, he hears a voice.
“Dr. Hayes?” one of the scientists asked, his voice filled with fear. “I think we might have a problem.”
He then points to the monitor, where it does that the readings for the gas were spiraling out of control. “It’s not supposed to do that.”
As Dr. Hayes turns back to face the scientist, his face was pale with worry. ‘Well crap. I hope it’s not bad. We can get through this.’ Dr. Hayes thinks to himself as he walks up to the monitor.
“Do you think we’re able to fix this?” the scientist nervously asks.
Inside, Dr. Hayes had a feeling that they had failed, but couldn’t bring himself to anything yet. Instead, he forced a reassuring smile. “It’s just a glitch. We’ll have it fixed in no time.”
After some sleeping, the sound of the captain’s shoes, named David, echoed against the concrete floor, which woke up Scott. Scott groaned and rubbed his eyes as he sat up.
The section of the bunker they were in was dimly lit, and the air was thick with the smell of sweat and diesel fuel. He glanced around, trying to orient himself.
Brian, the sergeant, came up to David. “We gotta head to the test room. There’s a few issues going on.” Brian says.
Scott yawned while he stretched, and then stood up. He noticed that the other soldiers were already moving about, gathering their gear and preparing for whatever was next. He tried to muster a yawn, but had a feeling that something wasn’t right. Back in the test room, some of the soldiers were freaking out.
“What the hell is going on?!”
“What happened to them?!”
As other soldiers continue to run down the hallway, Scott made his way over to where his weapons were stored.
On the way there, he noticed a faint smell. A smell... of gas. ‘Oh man. I hope we didn’t fuck it up that bad.’ He thought to himself.
As he walked to the weapons locker, he noticed that the other soldiers were acting different, as their movements were sluggish. Some of them reached out to him, and Scott focuses his attention on one of them.
“Help... This is no way to live...” One of them whispered.
Freaked out, Scott continues on his way to the weapons locker. He tried to shake off the feeling that something was wrong, but it wouldn’t go away.
He heard some yelling outside as he continued to walk. He finally reached his rifle, and just as he went to grab it, a dizzy feeling came to him, and everything went black.
