The First Storm

My gran told me stories of the first storm. How before our world was filled with life and light it was consumed in darkness. Dark monstrous shadow creatures, the Dakai, roamed the blank dark vastness of our mundane world. No light had even been shed on their barren land. Only their shadow that kept the dead world in darkness. Then, one day, amidst the darkness, a giant celestial force, our Elohie, our God appeared. From the midst of the darkness clouds of his hands encased the earth. Then an eruption of white crackling light burst from the sky. Lightening streaked across the once dark barren earth. The power and light of Elohie encased the earth bringing about life of plants, oceans, rivers, and of course, clouds. Clouds remained the highest peaks of our now living world in the lightened blue skies above. This power eradicated the darkness to the furthest and deepest shadows forced into the hells of our earth. The Dakai were exiled from the light, but in our world, the vices and misdeeds of men and humanoids alike, gave the shadows a foothold to stand in. The Dakai are cursed to crawl on their bellies in the dirt under us an to stay within the darkest parts of the shadows, but when you least expect it or feel a prickle across your neck that makes you shiver when there is no wind, the Dakai could we watching. When our world was still young, five hundred years after its creation, when man had domain of the lands, the dwarves the mountain, and the air Ashai people, the skies. The foothold the darkness grasped to became an anchor. From the lower lands and cities, a Lord of darkness and necromancy named Luferon  emerged. He exhibited his power to which some thought him a newcomer messiah to completely eradicate the darkness, but this was a lie. After using his power to charm the realm of men he turned on them. He freed hundreds of Dakai bringing forth their physical forms. The beasts descended in the lands slaughtering everyone and everything in its path. The once docile threat had now been brought back. For 100 years assault and war waged on. It was then that a chosen individual, Grindalye, who possessed the power of the storm came to be. Grindalye was said to be the son of Elohime Himself placed in mortal form. When this Ashai man came of age, raised seeing the suffering, threat, and danger of the growing darkness, he harnessed the power of the storm, master of the clouds, wind, rain, thunder, and lightening. Using his power he rose in rank and led the onslaught against this dark Lord and his shadow Dakai. Giving his last, Grindalye harnessed and became the storm intself. Sending crackling magic streaks of lightening, Grundalye laid the dark Lord low as he disappeared amongst the immense power and the shadow Dakai returned to the harmless shadows themselves serving as only temptation-al whispers in the cups of vices and ears of men. Luferon disappeared into the shadows as if he had only been a scary tale or dark rumored whisper within tavern walls. Some say the storm that was Grindalye eradicated Luferon or turned him into a shadow on a wall himself watching and waiting.

The stories of light and dark flash before my young eyes of six years. My visions of Elohime, Grindalye, and Luferon formulate in my mind. The immense dark over powered by the light in a flashing shriek of blue with a clap of thunder to follow like the same loud clasp from outside my bedroom window.

I squeal as I spring from my bed and dash across the room jumping into the arms of my eldest cousin, Prince Beleron. Catching me in his long arms he stumbles back as he catches me and the toy knight helment he narrowly steadies on his head.

"May, its just a story. I didn't think it would frighten you that bad." he says with a voice of concern eyeing me.

Beleron looks down at me with his shining blue eyes, the light blue skin of him glowing from the hearth of the fire as his long braided back raven hair woven with hues of purple trails down his back.

I look up clutching his face in my small hands "It's loud." as the lightening flashes again.

As the thunder booms I squeak hiding my face in his chest as I feel the familiar rumble of his laughter. I clatters the toy helmet to the floor as he plops down with me on the large silken body pillows in the corner of my room.

"Brave little lassie." he coos "I'm here. You shouldn't be afraid Maylys. It is just Elohime at work with Grindalye."

"At work?" I question softly looking out to the storm raging outside.

Beleron walks me to the window pointing "We are Ashai. Our God Elohime brings storms for watering the crops and vegetation of the earth as well our our rivers and clouds the city floats on now. We are air and cloud folk Maylys. We do not fear the storms. We come from them."

I look at him then out to the storm. My heart still patters in my chest as I lean against him "Doesn't it destroy too?"

Beleron frowns a little and looks sad but then as the lightening catches his eyes he smiles "Elohime does not destroy. He protects and provides. If a storm rages out of control and causes destruction...or death. Then it is for a bigger plan even if we do not understand or see. Do you understand, little May?"

I nod slowly "Yes."

The thunder roars and I wince still which Beleron only holds me tight "But loud noises are scary and I shall always be here to protect you, little May."

I smile looking up at him, my cousin, my best friend, my big beother “Promise?"

He nods setting me down "I promise." as he removes his necklace from his neck. A necklace with a gem of starlight, our houses symbol of the northern star that peaks out before the sun ever goes down.

As I look to the star with my whispy brown hair in my face I look at Beleron through my bangs. He smiles at me, but as my eyes look to the bright white streak in my hair I frown. I do not have hair like Beleron, mother, father, or anyone else in our family of perfectly tall, elegant, sunset and night hair colored Ashai.

"Beleron, why am I different?" I ask softly.

He smirks "Because my starfall, you were made special by Elohime. He touched you with his light-" he says trailing his finger down the streak "and I know, one day you're going to do something...wondrous."

As he lightly pinches my nose I giggle and bat his hand away as he smiles back at me crouched down reaching for another hug. That is when I feel myself being sucked back to my own reality as I awaken.

(21 years late

I gasp eyes wide as I see my bed canopy above. I see the patterns of stars etched in the fabric above me. I take in a breath and run it through my bright white hair until my hand goes limp against my pillows again.

It it then I hear the thunderous daunting thuds of footsteps just before my bedroom door is shoved open "Maylys Cumulous Stormborn, get your lazy rump from that bed. The day has started without you. If you wish to be any sort of respectable lady for the Stormborn house you must arise with the sun. Now get up!" Lord Weathernell snapped as he slammed the door behind him.

Without so much as giving him a glance I huff blowing a piece of my stray bangs from my face "Goodmorning to you as well, father."
