Summary

Bookish follows Elara, a young woman whose life revolves around books. She loves reading psychology, historical, thriller, and mysterious novels, and her obsession with stories shapes both her mind and daily routines. As a writer under the pen name Lumi Lowen, she creates her own tales, blending her fascination with human behavior, historical events, and thrilling narratives. Her life is a mix of college, library visits, late-night reading sessions, and messy rooms full of notebooks and ideas. Through reading, she immerses herself in other worlds and simultaneously studies her own mind, gradually realizing that books don’t just inform her—they subtly shape her perception, thoughts, and imagination. A small turning point comes when she meets an elderly former professor who reinforces the idea that books teach the mind to think. Elara reflects on her life and writing, discovering that her love for stories has always been intertwined with her understanding of herself, her curiosity about people, and her creative expression. Ultimately, the story is a celebration of self-discovery, the psychology of reading, and the transformative power of book.

Chapter 1:

BOOKISH

A Novel by Tooba Shahbaz

Chapter 1

Elara had never thought of her love for books as something unusual because for as long as she could remember stories had existed around her like quiet companions, and while other people seemed to move through life guided by conversations, plans, and social expectations, Elara moved through life guided by paragraphs, chapters, and ideas that lived inside the pages she carried everywhere with her, and the strange thing about her devotion was not that she loved reading but that reading seemed to organize the entire architecture of her mind, because every situation she experienced in the real world automatically connected itself to something she had once read, whether it was a psychological explanation for someone’s behavior, a historical event that mirrored a present situation, or the tension of a thriller novel that made ordinary moments feel layered with hidden meaning, and this habit slowly shaped her personality into someone observant, quiet, thoughtful, and deeply curious about the inner workings of people’s minds, which is why psychology books became her favorite companions during her teenage years, because they offered something stories alone could not give her: explanations for why humans acted the way they did, why emotions changed suddenly, why silence could hide more meaning than words, and why every person carried invisible thoughts that rarely reached the surface, and this fascination blended perfectly with her love of historical narratives where she could travel through centuries and observe how societies changed, how wars began because of fragile decisions, and how individuals in the past struggled with emotions that felt surprisingly familiar to modern lives, and through these different genres she slowly built a mental library not just of fictional adventures but of patterns, behaviors, and human motivations that fascinated her more deeply than anything else in the world.
