Bookish a novel by Tooba Shahbaz

Summary

Bookish follows Elara, a young woman whose life revolves around books. She loves reading psychology, historical, thriller, and mysterious novels, and her obsession with stories shapes both her mind and daily routines. As a writer under the pen name Lumi Lowen, she creates her own tales, blending her fascination with human behavior, historical events, and thrilling narratives. Her life is a mix of college, library visits, late-night reading sessions, and messy rooms full of notebooks and ideas. Through reading, she immerses herself in other worlds and simultaneously studies her own mind, gradually realizing that books don’t just inform her—they subtly shape her perception, thoughts, and imagination. A small turning point comes when she meets an elderly former professor who reinforces the idea that books teach the mind to think. Elara reflects on her life and writing, discovering that her love for stories has always been intertwined with her understanding of herself, her curiosity about people, and her creative expression. Ultimately, the story is a celebration of self-discovery, the psychology of reading, and the transformative power of books.

Chapter 2 and 3.

Chapter 2

By the time Elara entered college her life had settled into a rhythm that revolved almost entirely around books, lectures, notebooks, and the quiet sanctuary of the library she visited every afternoon after classes ended, a place where the outside world seemed to soften into silence as soon as she stepped inside, because the tall shelves filled with thousands of books created an atmosphere that felt both protective and stimulating to her mind, and she loved the ritual of walking slowly through the aisles, scanning titles, occasionally pulling out a book and reading a random paragraph just to test whether it contained something interesting enough to occupy her attention, and sometimes she would sit near the tall windows where the late afternoon sunlight spilled across the wooden tables while she read psychological studies about memory, perception, and personality, topics that made her constantly analyze both herself and the people she encountered in daily life, and during these quiet hours she rarely spoke to anyone because her thoughts traveled too deeply through the ideas she absorbed, building silent connections between theories, narratives, and personal observations that slowly shaped the way she understood the world around her.

Chapter 3

Her room at home, however, looked nothing like the calm order of the library because Elara’s creative life lived there in a constant storm of ideas, unfinished drafts, scattered notebooks, loose papers filled with handwritten story fragments, and stacks of books leaning against the walls like uneven towers that threatened to collapse if someone moved too quickly through the room, and although other people might have described the space as messy or chaotic, Elara saw it as a physical map of her imagination, because each pile of papers represented a different story she had once attempted to write, a different character she had imagined, or a strange concept that had appeared suddenly while she was reading late at night, and it was in this room that Elara lived her second identity as a writer, someone who quietly created stories inspired by the genres she loved most: psychological explorations of human behavior, thrilling narratives about unexpected events, and strange imaginative situations that pushed characters into moments of deep self-reflection.
