Chapter 5
Ethan Blackwood’s Manipulation
The rain fell steadily outside the police station windows.
Inside the interrogation room, the air was tense.
Alex stood beside the table, flipping through the documents Maria had helped uncover. Emails. Bank transfers. Phone records. Each piece painted the same picture.
Ethan Blackwood had planned everything.
Across the table, Lila sat quietly, her eyes fixed on the folder in front of her. For weeks she had wondered why Ethan always seemed one step ahead of them.
Now she knew.
He had never been guessing.
He had been orchestrating.
Maria sat nearby, her hands clasped tightly together. The guilt on her face had not faded since her confession.
“I never realized how carefully he was controlling everything,” she whispered.
Alex nodded grimly.
“That’s exactly how he wanted it.”
Lila looked up.
“What do you mean?”
Alex slid a document across the table.
“This email was sent weeks before the research files disappeared.”
Lila read the message slowly. Her heart sank.
It was from Ethan.
The message discussed weaknesses in the university’s research database—details only someone inside the project would normally know.
“He was studying us,” Alex said. “Learning how the system worked before he made his move.”
Maria looked horrified.
“I thought he just wanted information to protect Javier.”
Alex shook his head.
“No. Ethan wanted control.”
Lila’s voice was quiet but firm.
“Why me?”
Alex leaned back in his chair.
“Because you were the perfect target.”
Lila frowned.
“How?”
“You were close to the research project,” Alex explained. “You had access to the files. And you were respected by the university.”
He paused.
“If the data disappeared and the trail led back to you, no one would question it.”
Lila’s chest tightened.
“So he framed me.”
“Yes,” Alex said.
Maria buried her face in her hands.
“I helped him do it.”
Alex’s voice softened slightly.
“You helped him gather pieces. But he built the trap himself.”
The room fell silent.
Alex opened another file.
“There’s more.”
Lila looked up again.
“What else did he do?”
Alex slid a printed bank statement toward her.
“Money transfers.”
Lila examined the page.
Large sums had been sent to several anonymous accounts.
“What is this?” she asked.
“Payments,” Alex said. “Ethan was paying people inside the university to stay quiet.”
Lila’s eyes widened.
“So the scandal was bigger than we thought.”
“Much bigger,” Alex replied.
Ethan hadn’t just stolen research.
He had manipulated the entire situation.
He spread rumors through the university. He bribed employees to ignore security alerts. He planted evidence that pointed directly at Lila.
Every move had been calculated.
Every step had been planned.
Maria slowly lifted her head.
“He told me if I didn’t help him, Javier would be ruined.”
Alex nodded.
“That was his leverage.”
Lila clenched her fists.
“He used fear.”
“Yes,” Alex said. “Fear and loyalty.”
For a moment, none of them spoke.
Outside, thunder rumbled in the distance.
Then Lila stood up.
“He thought he could destroy my life and walk away,” she said quietly.
Alex closed the folder.
“Not anymore.”
Lila looked at Maria.
“You said you’re willing to testify.”
Maria nodded immediately.
“I’ll tell the police everything.”
Alex allowed himself a small smile.
“Good.”
He gathered the documents and placed them neatly into the folder.
“Because once this evidence reaches the authorities…”
He paused.
“Ethan Blackwood’s entire scheme will collapse.”
Lila looked toward the window as the rain slowly began to fade.
For months Ethan had been hiding behind lies and manipulation.
But now the truth was finally catching up to him.
And this time—
He wouldn’t escape the consequences.
