Chapter 1 (stillness)

I open my eyes. My head hurts so much I can barely think. I try to remember where I am but nothing comes to mind. I look around and realize I’m lying on a hospital bed. Then I hear footsteps echoing. Slow at first, then faster like someone is running toward me. A man appears in front of me, out of breath and sweating like he ran all the way here.

Before I can say anything, he grabs my hand and tears start falling from his eyes. It’s confusing and surprising. His hands are warm and so are his tears as they fall onto my skin. He looks at me with those teary eyes and something in my chest softens, even though I don’t understand why.

“I’m sorry… it’s all my fault,” he says, his voice shaking like he’s desperate. I stare at him.

“Who....are you?” I ask while slowly pulling my hand back.

He looks at me for a moment, like the answer matters more than anything. I can’t help but see how hurt he looks.

“I’m your husband.” He pauses, “Rave.”

I can only remember fragments of my life. In my memories, everyone’s face is blurred. I can’t clearly recognize anyone. I look at him again.

“My… husband?” I ask hesitantly, expecting I am the one who heard him wrong.

“Yes,” he says quietly. I feel awkward and confused. He wipes his tears and sits beside me.

“Eve… can you remember me?” he asks.

I think my name is Eve. “No…” I say. It is barely audible. I want to tell him that I don’t remember anything but it feels like my neck is chained.

“Let’s not worry about it right now. Do you need water?” he asks gently. I nod and he pours me a glass of water and hands it to me.

As I hold it, fragments of memory flicker in my mind. My family… there are four of us. My parents, me and my… sibling? I’m not sure. I don’t know. Do I have a family?

“Where is my… family?” I ask.

He pauses before answering, “It’s complicated to explain. They don’t talk to us anymore.”

I don’t remember anything clearly, however something inside me feels… extremely sad.

“How many members are in my family… including me?” I ask. I know how many members are in my family but it won’t hurt to confirm.

“Including you, four,” he says.

Relief washes over me and I let out a quiet breath. At least I can remember a few things. Maybe that strange feeling toward Rave is wrong after all. I look at him again. He seems calm, emotional, caring and …handsome. No one cries like that for no reason. I can trust him.

A few hours later, I am ready to leave. That’s what the doctor says. I don’t feel ready. Everything still feels unfamiliar, strange like I have become someone else overnight. Rave stays beside me the whole time, as if he is afraid I might end up disappearing if he looks away. He is attentive and caring toward me the entire time.

We finally reached a black car. I don’t even remember what the brand of it is. There are silly stickers stuck all over its back. I stare at it.

“Do you like this car? Or the stickers?” he asks I am surprised by the question. I want to answer, but I can’t say anything.

“You are the one who stuck them,” he says gently.

“Did I do that?” I ask.

“Yes, you did,” he says calmly. He opens the door for me and suddenly I come face to face with a big fluffy dog. His eyes are big and his tail keeps wagging and then he suddenly leaps at me. I can’t help but laugh.

“His name is Max,” Rave says. He helps Max and me settle into the back seat comfortably. I can’t contain my smile. I pet Max again and again while he also leans toward me.

“So… I mean... Max lives with us? “I ask expecting yes.

“Yes, he’s a mixed breed. You rescued him and since then he has lived with us. He misses you so much that I cannot help but bring him to meet you,” he says while starting the car.

On our way Rave guides me through my phone while he drives. Max keeps nudging me as I try to use my phone. It’s not like I forget to use mobiles or electronics. It’s familiar but at the same time it just feels strange and unknown. I wonder if I am forgetting something important?

On our way home, I looked out of the window. The sunset looks beautiful as the quiet wind touches my face. I might have met Max now but it seems that we have been best friends for decades.

When we finally reach our building, I can’t help but wonder what Rave does or what I do for a living to afford such a lavish life. He helps me get out of the car and helps me and Max to go inside. It feels so strange. Does anyone even live in this building? It is no less than a haunted building but a clean one.

“Don’t worry, we are quite late, that’s why no one is in the corridor. It is always full of people and lively,” he says, gently guiding me toward the lift. I nod and follow him.

When we finally reached our apartment, I couldn’t help but notice our apartment number…13. It feels like I am forgetting something. The feeling is so strong that it feels a little suspicious. Maybe I should just stop overthinking and move forward.
