Frightened and Alone

Ellie is outside, and it is freezing. She sits near the entrance to some woods on the road. Many cars pass by her. She is a waif-like child who has been abandoned by her parents. The only items she carries with her are the clothes she is wearing and a weathered blanket. She has always lived in penury, at least from what she remembers.

Eventually it gets too cold for her to stand on the side of the road, so she wanders into the forest. “I have to keep moving,” she tells herself, I’m not going to freeze.” She comes to an empty cave and enters it unsure if there are any lurking animals inside. Ellie decides that the cave is safe, so she lays down and falls asleep.

She wakes with a start, she probably would have slept longer if not for the voices that awoke her. From what she can hear the voices came from a young man and a young woman. “Come, we will take her to the ghetto.” the young man says. “Um, sir are you sure about taking her?” insinuates the young woman. “Yes, I’m sure.” “Do I have to tell you that anecdote again or have I may myself clear?” “No, sir, you don’t,” answers the young woman. The young woman walks closer to where Ellie is. “No!” “Stay away from me!” Ellie cries out in fear. “There is no need to be afraid we will take you to a warm, safe place.” the young says in a soft voice. “O-Okay.” Ellie answers nervously. They gently wrap Ellie up in a blanket, then they set off toward the so called ghetto.

Heika van Walderveen: I had to get used to the style. It’s a lot of switching and getting back into the story of the characters. Also the different timelines were a bit confusing in the beginning. But once you’re used to it, it’s really quite original. The plot is good, but it’s only book 1 (out of 3), but so far so good...

CINNAZEN: I loved this book. I’m starting on book two and I’m confused because they talk about her being pregnant in the third chapter after they set off on their way to the new location BUT in this book she’s bleeding and not sure if she’s even pregnant? So that’s one of the things that’s confusing. It doesn...
