Unexpected Guest

(English)

~Unexpected Guest~

"Nearly 18 years passed until I wrote this sentence, but I do not remember taking even a single peaceful breath during those 18 years. I had things most people couldn't have. I had branded clothes, shoes, and technological devices that no one else had. But I lacked the love and peace that most people possess. I didn't have a sibling I could play games and fight with, or an older brother or sister to back me up. I didn't have a mother who braided and caressed my hair every day while I was going to school, or a father who asked how school was going. Don't get me wrong, my mother and father were alive, but oblivious to living. Or oblivious to keeping someone alive. Until now, I haven't hugged my mother even once, and my father hasn't caressed my hair even once. While they were busy like robots with just their work, I had become roboticized too in my room that resembled a large house.

In short, I could buy everything I wanted the moment I wanted it. Except for a peaceful family..."

I had just written the last sentence when I immediately closed my notebook at the sound of the knock on the door and turned toward it.

"Yes?"

The door opened softly and Sibel Abla entered.

"Dinner is ready, miss."

"Are my mother and father at the table?"

"No, they are busy right now, but they will come in the evening."

I turned back around and took a deep breath.

"I'm not hungry, I'll come in the evening."

"But miss, you didn't have breakfast either and..."

"I said I'm not hungry, Sibel Abla. Could you please leave me alone?"

She was quiet for a moment, then closed the door. I opened my notebook and read the last sentence again.

"I could buy everything I wanted the moment I wanted it. Except for a peaceful family..."

I slammed my notebook shut and pressed my hands against my eyes to keep from crying.

I should have been used to it by now. I should have been used to not seeing them at any time other than dinner.

Just as I was about to calm down, the ringing phone caused me to open my eyes. I picked up the phone and looked at the name on the screen.

-Mother-

Sibel Abla must have told them I wasn't coming down for dinner. I took a deep breath and answered the phone.

"Hello?"

"Hilal, why aren't you coming down for dinner? You didn't eat breakfast either. As if we don't have enough work to do, do we have to deal with you too?"

I took a sorrowful breath.

"I don't want excuses. You get up right now and eat that food. Remember, eating is essential to be smart and strong. You will eat not because you want to, but because you have to. Look, I don't have much time, if..."

Just as I was being convinced, the last words she said caused me to furrow my brows and made the anger inside me boil over.

"You don't have time?"

I said involuntarily. My tone of voice had risen without me realizing it.

"You don't have time, is that so? You don't have time to sit with me, to think of me, but you have time to scold me, right?"

I realized what I had said only when the words I shouted cut off my breath. Damn it! How did I say that? I, who had been silent for 18 years without opening my mouth, why had I boiled over like this now?

I listened closely to the sound on the phone. She must have been surprised just like me, because she didn't say a single word. I immediately tried to salvage the situation.

"I..."

I said, but couldn't find anything to say.

"I'm sorry."

I hung up the phone, threw it onto the opposite armchair, and started to cry.

I was tired now. So very tired. I was so tired of struggling not to lose my mind in this loneliness, of trying to see my parents at a time other than dinner, of staring at the empty chairs across from me during the meals I ate alone.

While trying to wipe away my tears with the back of my hand, I simultaneously tried to regulate my breathing and closed my eyes. I reviewed my childhood.

Imagine a child. They get up early in the morning, having breakfast with their family with sleepy eyes. After braiding their hair, their mother leaves a small kiss and puts some pocket money in their pocket. Since the child has already found peace, they only focus on the money. And imagine another child. A child who doesn't go to school but receives private education, who only speaks with their family at dinner, but has mountains of money in their pocket. They look at the money in one pocket, and then at the empty chairs at the breakfast table. They keep wondering if all that effort, all that loneliness was for this 5-10 centimeter piece of paper.

This was the child I was in that second story. I was the child who grew up in money, but was deprived of an embrace. Even though I had been experiencing the same thing for years, I had never complained; I had always remained silent. Until today...

I stood up and headed to the sink. I stared at my reflection in the mirror for a few seconds. My deep green eyes, which should have promised life and hope, looked exhausted inside. There was no problem on my face due to the creams I used, but my soul had literally collapsed. I turned on the tap and brought the ice-cold water into contact with my skin. I felt better when I left the bathroom.

When I came to the exact middle of the room, I stopped and cast a blank stare at the computer and game consoles standing right in front of me. The money that brought me to this state could not make me happy right now. I had much different methods.

I quickly locked the door and stood in the exact middle of the room. I pulled the carpet under my feet in one go and stared at the two hatches beneath it. Yes, I had two secret rooms underground. And the one that would do me good right now was the 1st room. I lifted the hatch and went down the stairs that appeared. As my feet touched the ground, I felt my breath catch.

This room was filled with giant space models hanging from above. From Mercury to Neptune, there were models of all the planets and many stars. Moreover, the lights on these models illuminated this dark room, which had no windows.

I discovered these two rooms the day we moved here, covered them with a carpet, and hid them from my family. Later, according to my own imagination, I ordered cardboards and lights from the internet and designed these models. In times when I wanted to get away from the real world, I would come to this room and clear my head.

I sat on my chair right under the model of Earth, picked up the newspaper on the table, and read it again for the umpteenth time.

"SPACE TRAVEL BANNED WORLDWIDE!

In 1925, 4 American astronauts carried out the first space journey. All precautions had been taken, radios had been set up. However, the moment the 4 astronauts passed the ozone layer and went out into space, communication suddenly cut off, and those 4 astronauts were never heard from again. Thereupon, the President of the United States stated that going into space was very dangerous, announcing that going into space was banned all over the world, and after that day, no one dared to attempt this event. As for those 4 astronauts, they are still missing..."

I began to turn uneasily in my chair. One of my biggest dreams was to go into space, but it was impossible. Even though nearly 100 years had passed since that day, that ban was still in effect.

Putting my thoughts aside, I directed my steps toward the stairs. I would have liked to stay longer, but I had to study. I closed the hatch, covered it with the carpet, and returned to my old boring life.

I sat in front of my desk and turned on the computer. I looked at the photo on the screen and smiled bitterly.

It was a photo taken years ago. A dinner, me, my mother, and my father were sitting at the table eating again. While I was grinning from ear to ear, they had forced a smile. We didn't have any other photos anyway.

While I was staring intently at the photo on the screen, the computer suddenly turned off. Before I could understand what was happening, white lights suddenly started to come out. Just as I was about to check if a virus had entered, I saw a white light coming right toward me and threw myself to the side with a sudden reflex. The light grazed me, hit the wardrobe behind me, and turned into a large round cluster of light. I couldn't believe my eyes because I had never seen this light cluster before. I tried to calm down, but the light was still there.

I stood up with a confidence I didn't know where it came from, and began moving toward the light. Just as I had approached, a hand emerging from the light caused me to step back in fear. Yes, a hand had emerged from the light! The arm and body followed the hand. Hidden behind the chair, I was observing this person. Once they emerged completely, the lights suddenly disappeared, and their green eyes met mine.

I swallowed.

Whoever this person was, they were a copy of me. We had the same eye color, hair color, and even the same facial features. I was certain that whoever this person was, they were a copy of me, but there was a problem. He was a boy...

He looked into my eyes for a few seconds. Then, probably unable to take it anymore, he collapsed to his right side. I was so afraid of him that I hadn't even bothered to catch him as he fell...

(Türkçe)

~Beklenmeyen Misafir~

-Evet?

Kapı usulca açıldı ve Sibel Abla girdi.

-Yemek hazır efendim.

-Annem ve babam masada mı?

-Hayır, şu an meşguller fakat akşam gelecekler.

Kahretmesin! Ben bunu nasıl söylemiştim? 18 yıl boyunca susan, ağzını açmayan ben, şimdi neden böyle köpürmüştüm?

Telefondaki sese dikkat kesildim.

Beni bu hâle getiren para, şu an beni mutlu edemezdi.
