Chapter 1

As Jane and I lounged on the bed, engrossed in our debate over the latest crime case, our playful banter filled the room. Her infectious grin mirrored my scepticism as we traded arguments back and forth. With each point, our kicks and eye rolls punctuated the discussion, adding a layer of camaraderie to our exchange.

“I’m telling you, Minnie, it’s too obvious. The boyfriend definitely did it,” Lucy proclaimed with a mischievous glint in her eyes.

I chuckled, playfully kicking her leg. “Oh, come on, Jane. It’s all too staged. Plus, the guy already confessed to cheating. It’s right there in front of you.”

Jane shook her head, laying her head on my stomach. “You’re out of your mind, Jane. Staging something like that would be way too complicated.”

“But think about it,” I insisted, eyes still glued to the true crime show on TV. “Haven’t you seen ‘Gone Girl’? Sometimes things aren’t as straightforward as they seem.”

Before our discussion could continue, Jane’s mother’s call interrupted us, signalling the need for her to babysit. I couldn’t help but sigh at the thought of being left alone with Alan and his unsavoury friends.

“Maybe I could come with you,” I suggested, knowing how much I hated being alone in this situation.

Without missing a beat, Jane called out to her mom, using her unique charm to get her attention. As we made our way downstairs to talk to her mom, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of camaraderie with Jane, even in the most mundane moments.

As the hours passed, I found myself immersed in a game with Jane’s younger siblings, a mix of dolls and cars scattered around us. The news bulletin about the missing girl’s safe return broke the lighthearted atmosphere, prompting a mixture of disbelief and amusement from Lucy and me.

“She said she was attacked by vampires,” I muttered, glancing up at the TV as I blew on a hot pizza roll. Lucy’s little sister, Annie, looked up at me with wide eyes, clearly frightened by the news.

“But that’s total bullshit, since vampires aren’t real!” I exclaimed, trying to reassure Annie as Lucy grinned beside me.

The conversation took a more serious turn as Lucy lamented my impending departure. Memories of my own family troubles resurfaced as I thought about the recent tragedy involving my aunt. The news headline echoed in my mind, casting a shadow over our conversation.

“You think we’ll be able to solve those cases when you get back with your ‘mystic meg powers’?” Lucy teased, bringing me back to the present moment.

I smirked, feeling a surge of excitement at the thought of our future adventures. “College is going to be the best time of our lives,” I declared, raising my pizza roll in a toast.

“Here’s to college,” Lucy echoed, a smile spreading across her face as we clinked our makeshift glasses in celebration of the journey ahead.
