Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Two Different Worlds

The quiet click of the grand grandfather clock echoed through the dim hallways of the Singhania mansion.

Eighteen-year-old Devian Singhania stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass window of his bedroom, spinning a basketball absentmindedly in one hand while holding an advanced physics textbook in the other. Outside, rain tapped lightly against the glass.

Inside, the silence was heavy-a silence he had deliberately built around himself over five long years.

Devian hadn't always been this distant. Before he turned twelve, he was a warm, bright boy who laughed easily. But when his mother passed away after a prolonged illness, the warmth in his world vanished. The final blow came a few years later when his father remarried. Watching a new woman move into his mother's house felt like a betrayal he couldn't forgive.

Instead of throwing tantrums, Devian withdrew completely. He built thick, unbreakable walls around his heart, replacing his emotions with absolute discipline. Coldness became his armor; perfection in academics and sports became his escape. He spoke only when necessary, trusted no one, and cared for almost nothing...

Except for one person.

"Devian bhai!"

A soft, tiny voice broke the silence. Six-year-old Ahana peeked into his room, clutching a worn-out storybook to her chest.

In an instant, the icy detachment in Devian's dark eyes melted. He caught the basketball smoothly and set it beside his desk. Ahana was his half-sister, but to Devian, she was just his little sister the only innocent soul in a home that felt like a corporate board meeting.

"Ahana," he said, his tone softening into something quiet and gentle. "Why aren't you asleep?"

"I wanted you to finish the story," she whispered, walking in on tiny feet.

Devian knelt beside her, taking the book gently. No matter how hardened he had become to the rest of the world, Ahana was the one person he was fiercely determined to protect.

The Business Meeting

Across town, in the polished executive lounge of a high-end hotel, Vinod Rao sat across from Naman Singhania. Their business discussions were wrapping up over coffee, the air relaxed and pleasant.

"So, Vinod," Naman said, leaning back as he took a sip of espresso. "How are things at home? I heard your daughter was away at that prestigious all-girls boarding school?"

Vinod sighed, a mix of relief and concern on his face. "She was. But the school suddenly had to shut down mid-session due to major structural safety issues with the historic campus buildings. All the students were sent home, so she's back with us now. We're frantically trying to secure a mid-term transfer so her Class 11 studies don't suffer."

Naman nodded thoughtfully. "If you want my advice, transfer her to Oakridge International right away. It's easily the best school in the region, business families teach most of their children there only, the academics, sports, discipline, everything is top-tier. They rarely take mid-session admissions, but with her academic record, it shouldn't be an issue. My son, Devian, studies there in Class 11 as well."

Vinod considered the name carefully. Oakridge International. He had heard excellent things about its faculty and reputation. "That sounds like a life-saver option. I'll talk to her about it tonight."

The Rao Household

Meanwhile, peace was nowhere to be found in the Rao living room.

Meera was sitting on the rug trying to organize her novel collection having brought all her belongings back from her boarding school dorm when her elder brother, Aarav, strolled by, casually picked up her favorite bookmark, and held it high out of reach.

"Aarav, give it back!" Meera snapped, jumping up to grab it.

"Catch me if you can, kiddo," Aarav smirked, dodging her effortlessly with his long college-athlete legs.

Just as Meera lunged for him, the front door clicked open. Vinod Rao walked in, loosening his tie after a long day of work.In a fraction of a second, Meera's eyes lit up with mischief. She immediately threw herself slightly backward onto the plush sofa, clutching her arm with exaggerated dramatics, her face twisting into full theatrical agony.

"Dad!" Meera cried, letting out a gasp worthy of an Oscar award. "Look at him! He hit me! I was just sitting quietly studying, and he attacked me out of nowhere!"

Aarav froze mid-step, his jaw practically dropping to the floor. "What?! Dad, she's lying! I didn't even touch her!"

"My arm is completely broken, Dad, I can't feel my fingers!" Meera sniffled, wiping an imaginary tear while sneaking a quick, victorious glare at Aarav from behind her hand.

Vinod couldn't help but laugh as he set his briefcase down on the table. "Alright, alright, both of you settle down! Aarav, stop bothering your sister. Meera, save the drama for the theater club."

Aarav threw his hands in the air, rolling his eyes. "She's a terror, Dad. Absolute terror."

"I heard that!" Meera grinned, instantly recovering from her 'broken arm' and sitting up straight as if nothing had happened.

After washing up, the family gathered around the dining table for a peaceful dinner. The aroma of fresh home-cooked food filled the room, and the earlier chaos settled into cozy warmth. As they were finishing their meal, Vinod set his fork down and looked over at Meera.

"Meera, I spoke with Naman Singhania today during our meeting," Vinod began, his tone gentle but serious. "We were discussing your mid-session transfer options."

Meera looked up, pausing with her glass of water. "Did you find a place that will take me mid-term?"

"I did," Vinod nodded with a smile. "I'm securing your transfer to Oakridge International. Since it's mid-session, you'll have to catch up a bit, but the new term starts in just three days."

Aarav whistled softly under his breath. "Oakridge? That's a serious school, Meera."

Meera blinked, processing the news. Shifting from a quiet, all-girls boarding environment directly into a bustling co-ed city school mid-session was a huge shift. But in just three days, her routine was going to change, and she would step into a whole new world.

"Oakridge International..." she murmured softly, a spark of curious excitement lighting up her eyes. "Alright, Dad. I'm ready."

Apart from Ahana, there was only one person who had managed to stay by Devian's side since childhood Aryan, his best friend and the only person Devian actually tolerated.

Without knocking, Aryan pushed open Devian's bedroom door and walked inside. Devian was sitting on the edge of his bed, eyes locked onto the screen, intensely focused on a video game while holding a controller.

Aryan threw himself onto the soft sofa, groaning dramatically. "Bro, you didn't pick up any of my calls!"

Devian didn't even blink, his thumb moving rapidly across the buttons. "I'm the top scorer. I can't play with my eyes off the TV."

"Stop it, let's move out, yaar!" Aryan complained, sitting up.

"Wait. Just two more minutes," Devian replied calmly, his focus unbroken.

Aryan rolled his eyes, reached into the fruit bowl on the side table, and picked up an apple, taking a loud crunch out of it while watching Devian play. Exactly two minutes later, the screen flashed VICTORY. Devian tossed the controller onto the bed, grabbed his jacket, and both of them headed out.

Meanwhile, in the Rao household,

Meera walked into her brother's room, leaning against the doorframe with a sweet, suspiciously polite smile.

"Aarav... you're leaving for your college hostel tomorrow, right?"

Aarav stopped folding his shirt and looked at her warily. "So?"

"Let's go to the riverfront! It's so beautiful in the evening," she pleaded, clasping her hands together.

Aarav smirked, crossing his arms. "You don't have any friends here yet, do you? That's the only reason you're being so sweet to me. Get out, I will be back soon."

Meera's face instantly shifted into full dramatic mode. She gasped, adopting a fake, teary-eyed crying tone. "I'm going to miss you so much! Can't we just go enjoy one last evening together before you leave?!"

Fine. Give me five minutes."

Meera grinned, her 'tears' disappearing instantly. "Okay! I'll be ready in ten minutes!"

Aarav glared at her in irritation as she turned to run off. "You just said five!"

The Riverfront Encounter

The cool evening breeze blew gently across the riverfront promenade. Aarav was leaning against the stone railing on the far side of the road, checking his phone while waiting for Meera to bring their ice creams.

Holding two tall chocolate cones, Meera pushed open the glass door of the ice cream parlor and stepped onto the curb. Spotting her brother across the street, she took a quick step off the pavement to cross over completely oblivious to the loud, roaring engines echoing down the stretch.

Around the bend, two sports bikes came tearing down the asphalt at full speed, racing each other under the streetlights.

Meera turned her head just in time to see a sleek black bike speeding straight toward her. Her heart leaped into her throat.

"AAAHHHHHH!" she shrieked, freezing mid-step, her eyes shutting tight in pure terror as she braced for the impact.

SCREECH!

The sharp, deafening sound of burning rubber sliced through the air. Devian pulled a high-skill stunt, slamming his rear brake and drifting the heavy bike sideways, stopping mere inches from her knees. The wind from the sudden stop whipped Meera's hair across her face. Dead silence filled the street for three long seconds.

Devian reached up with gloved hands, unsnapping his helmet, and lifted it off. His dark hair was slightly tousled, his sharp jawline prominent under the streetlight, and his deep, piercing eyes locked onto her with cold irritation.

"Are you mad?!" Devian snapped, his voice rough and commanding. "Who crosses a main road without looking?!"

Meera slowly opened her eyes. The angry words she had prepared died right in her throat. She stood frozen, completely lost in the breath-taking intensity of his face, his sharp features, and those dark, unreadable eyes staring down at her. Time seemed to freeze for a brief moment.

"Meera!"

Aarav's panicked voice shattered the spell. He came sprinting across the street, grabbing Meera by her arms and pulling her back onto the sidewalk, scanning her for injuries. "Are you crazy?! Are you okay?!"

Devian slipped his helmet back on, adjusting his gloves as he revved his engine smoothly.

"Be careful next time, Miss," Devian said coldly through his visor. Without waiting for a response, he kicked his bike into gear and sped off into the night with Aryan following close behind.

Neither of them knew each other's names. Neither of them realized that in just three days, they would be sitting in the exact same classroom, becoming the only familiar presence in each other's worlds.

Inside the car on the drive back home, Aarav glanced at his sister from the driver's seat, still shaken. "Meera, you have to be cautious on the road! You could have been seriously hurt!"

Meera pouted, looking out the window as her cheeks flushed. "They were overspeeding..."

She rested her head against the cool glass, but the image of his dark, sharp eyes as he pulled off his helmet refused to leave her mind.

She softly murmured under her breath, repeating it like a quiet rhythm: "They were overspeeding... overspeeding... overspeeding... overspeeding... overspeeding..."

The Grumpy Next Door

MtnsOfTroy: If you're looking for a feel good, steamy romance novel this will definitely do the job. It doesn't have a whole lot of plot twists, but it's believable enough to make it exciting. My only main critique is that there's not enough conflict, but there are plenty of steamy encounters and a happy ending...
