Résumé

For years, Zayla used her genius for one purpose: running. Trained in the eight ancient arts of her tribe, she fled from Prince Yu Lad Shinistar. Her former fiancé. The man who discarded her for another. Then orchestrated her secret murder to keep the Shinistar Clan's reputation untarnished. But death wasn’t the end. Zayla was found—not by her killers, but by the Crown Prince. Xui Amon Xuilan is a brutal perfectionist. He has no desire for a wife. He wants a weapon. But the clock is ticking. Every ten years, the throne must rotate between the Xuilan and the Shinistar clans. And Amon refuses to let his kingdom fall into incompetent hands. So he demands Zayla become his queen. Now, Prince Yu is unraveling. Obsessed with reclaiming her. Or destroying her. To survive, Zayla turns her brilliant mind toward her new captor. She strikes a dangerous bargain: she will serve the Crown if he guarantees her protection. The price? She must solve ten impossible cases on every island in his empire. And rule Briiley from the shadows. But when the Shinistars demand her return, Amon plays his trump card. Before the high court, he places a firm hand on her stomach and declares: "She cannot marry another. She carries His Highness’s child." Ugh! Zayla immediately doubles over, faking a violent bout of morning sickness. Trapped between a man who want

Chapter 1. The Queen's Womb Was Never My Home

“Zayla, you know, right? I have loved Lemita for a long time... even before you were chosen, even when I was still inside the queen’s womb,”

His words were truly making no sense.

If he really wanted to reject me, he should have just said no, there was no need to talk utter nonsense like that.

Yu Ladr…

I had struggled with all my might. Even before I loved myself, I was already forced to love you first, but the result I received was your nonsensical speech.

“It is not Lemita who was chosen to be your partner, Yu,” I answered.

I stood in front of Yu Ladr, the man prepared by the Shinistar tribe to become the next king after the Xuilan tribe stepped down from the throne.

He was the son of the king, Shin Yuma Ladr, who was currently ruling the country of Brilley Sand’a, the country where I lived.

Yu Ladr sat on the sofa, close to his bed.

Right now was the time for me to serve him after 20 years of being trained hard just to become his partner.

“It is true it’s not Lemita,” Yu Ladr stood up.

His smile was gentle, his gaze warm.

Those rarest gray-colored eyeballs in the world locked tightly onto my eyes.

“But if you die right now, Lemita will become my partner, Zayla. I will ask for her as a reward for losing my precious future queen, as compensation for my despair,”

I took two steps back.

My heart ached. It felt like being pierced by thorns.

That bastard father left my mother just for that damn queen— Yu Ladr's mother.

Forcing his only daughter to be trained hard to become a prospective wife for the son of the woman he loved.

Even after trying this hard...

I had to die at the hands of the son of the woman my father loved.

Bastard father.

Damn queen.

Accursed prospective husband.

Before even getting to meet my mother, I had to die.

Die?

Damn, Die.

“I refuse to die,” my voice was cold. My chin lifted. “Lemita does not love you. The one she loves is... Xui... Amon... Xuilan,”

My throat choked as Yu Ladr grabbed my neck, hard.

“Die, Zayla... for me, for the man you love,”

Yu Ladr, you bastard.

Both of my hands tried hard to pry his hands off.

My body went up, my feet dangling in the air.

I smiled faintly as my thick, long fingernails dug deep into the flesh of his hand.

Red liquid spurted out.

Yu Ladr’s eyes widened, turning red.

“Stubborn!” Yu Lad’s jaw clenched.

The vein on his forehead popped out.

The choke on my neck was released

.

I stepped back a few steps and swung my hand. Those drops of red liquid splattered, falling to the floor, onto the bedsheet, onto the wall.

Yu Lad held his bleeding hand.

His breath was heavy.

He took a handkerchief from his gray military uniform. Covering the three thorns of wounds bleeding on his hand.

“I Love You, Yu Ladr,” I smiled bitterly,

“But I refuse to die because of you, ughhh!”

My body flew backward, my back hitting the wall, hard. I sat down on the floor beside the window. Blood gushed out from my mouth as the sole of Yu Ladr’s foot slammed hard against my chest.

It hurts, you bastard.

My eyes grew hazy.

Tired.

So damn annoyed.

Damn...

Damn...

Damn…

He is the only man I must love. The one I have sacrificed everything for.

My time.

My energy.

My effort.

But he repaid me with my death?

By killing me?

By burying all my efforts.

The 8 disciplines of the country’s tribes.

Training to death... just to die.

Die?

Die...

Bastard…

“Let me go. I will disappear from this country. Just let me go... I just want to meet my mother,” my breath was heavy, my mouth open, my voice choked as a flying knife almost stabbed my forehead if my head hadn’t tilted, dodging it.

“Yu Ladr!” I screamed loudly.

Echoing, piercingly loud. Sticking into the wall behind me, the knife vibrated right beside my head.

“Just die, Zayla.” Yu Lad pulled out a gold-colored handgun, pulling the trigger.

My tears fell, wetting my cheeks. I took a breath.

“I’m sorry, you aren’t worthy enough yet to get love from me,”

“I want to meet my mother, Yu Lad. I miss her to death,” I whispered softly while staring at those gray eyes. “Mom... Please... Please... Come back and look at your daughter. I am so tired of suffering, Mom. Come and hug me,”

Bang!
