Chapter 1: The Rain That Changed Everything

Three years ago, the rain wouldn't stop.

It poured over the city like the sky was trying to wash away every secret hidden beneath it.

Inside a small car driving home from a grocery trip, twelve-year-old Lucian Rosewood sat in the backseat, watching raindrops race each other down the window.

Beside him was his little brother.

Even during the darkest storms, his brother always found something to smile about.

"Lucian," he whispered.

Lucian turned.

"What?"

His brother looked out at the stormy sky with wide, curious eyes.

"What if magic is real?"

Lucian raised an eyebrow.

"Magic?"

"Yeah," his brother said excitedly. "Like spells, hidden worlds, strange creatures... what if there are places nobody knows about?"

Lucian smiled.

His brother always believed there was more to the world than people could see.

"Maybe there is," Lucian said quietly.

From the driver's seat, their father let out a tired sigh.

"Enough with the fantasy talk."

His brother leaned back.

"But what if—"

"Drop it," their father said firmly. "Magic isn't real."

The two boys went quiet.

Then, after a few seconds...

His brother started laughing.

Lucian tried not to laugh too, but he couldn't help it.

For a moment, everything was normal.

For a moment, everything was perfect.

Then the tires hit the water.

The car moved suddenly.

Too suddenly.

Lucian grabbed the seat as the world outside twisted into a blur.

His brother called his name.

There was a loud crash.

The sound of metal.

The sound of breaking glass.

Then...

Nothing.

When Lucian opened his eyes again, he was surrounded by white walls and strange beeping sounds.

A hospital.

For a few seconds, he didn't remember what happened.

Then the memories rushed back.

The rain.

The car.

His family.

His mother sat beside him, holding his hand tightly.

Her eyes were full of tears.

"Mom..." Lucian whispered.

Camilla Rosewood looked at him, trying to stay strong.

"Lucian..."

Her voice broke.

"The accident..."

She looked away.

"Your brother didn't make it."

Lucian froze.

The words didn't make sense.

They couldn't be real.

"And your father..." Camilla continued softly.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"He didn't either."

Lucian stared at the ceiling.

Waiting.

Waiting for someone to tell him this was just a nightmare.

Waiting for his brother to walk through the door and start talking about impossible worlds again.

But nobody came.

The Rosewood house became quieter.

Lucian grew older, but the memories never completely disappeared.

He stopped talking about magic.

Stopped talking about strange worlds.

Because magic was just a story.

And stories weren't real.

That was what he believed.

One morning, Camilla stood outside his bedroom door.

"Lucian?"

He looked up from his desk.

"Yeah?"

She gave him a gentle smile.

"Have you made any friends lately?"

Lucian looked away.

"Not really."

Camilla sighed softly.

"The bus for Reality Check Camp leaves at eight. Maybe meeting new people will help."

Lucian looked toward the window.

The rain had stopped.

For once, the sky was clear.

"Okay," he said.

He didn't know why...

But something felt different.

Like something was waiting for him.

Like the world was hiding a secret.

And somewhere beyond the ordinary world...

A door was waiting to be opened.

A door that would lead Lucian Rosewood to a place where magic was real.
