That Ghoul Ava~ retrospect
"Hello, it's a pleasure to read your work. Some thoughts about it... The writing style is fantastic, and I finished the story under the impression of hearing it firsthand from Ava. Or as much as she can say when she switches mid-story to Sharkmouth mode. The style is immersing, and it's an impressive ability to draw in the reader to the mind of the character. I look forward to more of your works... (But maybe some other time~ see you around ^^) On the technical side, the work is pretty much clean in my eyes-- even the artistic license breaking every now and then. I found none that was especially jarring or blaringly obvious, and you've done your work to recheck this whole story-- even the minor mods on the font style, or the spaces were effective. I'm charging you a star for the plot because it felt like a cliffhanger. (Now, doesn't that sound unreasonable?) Actually, the whole reminiscing sort of would have felt better if maybe you gave a glimpse of their current life? So many thoughts, like the fact that Ava is an undead and Lisa is not... And best friends or not, the latter will die, ad infinitum what-ifs. It's just a bit jarring to drop off when things have just begun... (and now I am rambling to hear more of her stories..) I liked how this turned out, but just felt the need to add more about it. If you have no plans to extend, I would understand, just as much as I hope to convey that I felt it was a trail that led me to a cliff. A cliff I barely noticed, and had several thoughts about wanting to jump from and delve in the possibility of bridges/ continuations and... you catch my drift. Overall, filing this under humor/horror is fitting. The notion of turning undead and your description is detailed and lovely. The humor comes from how things just pan to turn into such shenanigans. Ava herself is effectively witty and it's lovely. Mix the other elements, and I'm looking at a work I'd love to read more of. It's certainly a break from the usual Suspense/Horror. Thank you for sharing this story."
That Ghoul Ava
"Typically I find Halloween-esque protagonists twee, but I found this story so well put together, my usual protests were quelled. Your deep-third narration perspective was an excellent choice—I don't think it would have worked any other way, as sharing head-space with Ava enabled me to get over the squick-factor of ghouls quickly enough in order to get invested in her story. I loved this: “I’m sure there are a thousand things I could tell you, but I’m equally sure that, if it’s important, it will come up over the course of events.” Apt fourth-wall-penetration, for impatient readers! I had a mental stumble at this point, though: “I’d woke to a phone call…” There's apparent tense confusion, there. (Past vs Past-participle.) I imagine the sentence would have read much more smoothly had it been either, 'I woke...' (Past), or 'I’d woken...' (Past-participle). Also, side-query: '...I huffed a stand of hair...' and '...a long stand of drool...' Were these meant to be ‘strand’? All up, I think the tale was very well crafted. I can't claim education or experience in its genre (that is to say, in anything Halloween-esque or similar) but my uneducated mental critic found it refreshingly diverting."
That Ghoul Ava - Review in kind
"a very well-thought piece of writing. Initially I thought the author was a woman because of the sincerity of the words; no offence. As I continued reading I became more and more impressed. If this in fact a novel or novel-to-be then I recommend it to all to read. Highly descriptive and deep with humour to take the edge off. It also has a degree of "humanity". There is a great deal one can relate to in this story"
Love This Story!
"I love this story. It's funny and quirky. It's well-written and well-edited. Ava's character is fleshed out. I enjoy her snarkiness (that's a word -- really. LOL) and I feel for her and the changes she's experienced since becoming a ghoul. Definitely a unique take on the monster world with a cast of lively characters."
That Ghoul Ava
"Ava is quirky, irreverent, and totally honest about what she thinks, who she is (as far as she knows, as she is still learning how to be a ghoul) and I found her hilarious! Ava struggled along in today's world as a flawed but well meaning human and she has kept her human way of thinking after finding out she has become a ghoul. Being as unschooled about her new life and learning everything by accident, she shares with the reader all of the awkward and triumphant moments she lives, as she lives it. One is given the "BFF:" inside scoop on her thoughts and deeds. I was especially pleased at her audacity and gentleness throughout the story. I look for more of Ava's adventures and snarky comments as she saves the world once more...or not."
Infectious! (See what I did there?)
"This is so catchy, upbeat and naturally intrigues you. I whizzed through reading this because each line was unexpected- and I love that. The necro bit made me laugh. It is wonderfully dark, intriguing and the writer has a very distinct conversational writing style that makes me want to read on. Will want to follow this one."
mcks review
"Enjoyed the story all the way through, even though my inner voice kept telling me that I needed to go get busy. Good story. Enough happening to keep me interested in reading to the end. I can see where this would turn into a much longer book or series of occurrences. Generally do not read vampire or zombie books but find your stories captivating enough to read to the end. mckinzie"
