Poignant and Delightful

"Once Upon A Time in Terre Hill by D. D. Delaney was a tender tale of childhood that grabbed my interest right away and kept it. Brilliantly written, this was full of vivid description. Easily seen from a child's perspective, this story flowed beautifully and was enjoyable and engaging. I enjoyed seeing the world through a child's eyes, especially from this generation. The innocence and naivete were portrayed wonderfully - the author captured young love and childhood so nicely this book was hard to put down. A Beautiful and Poignant Tale

The mother who was also a thinker and the grandmother who was a woman who was divorced which was unusual in her day the details were amazing. The sweet hearts were touching."

"I'm about the same age as the author and grew up in rural Indiana, farm country near the Dunes. Like him, I was an outsider, but unlike him I never broke through that barrier into having friends--until summer camp, when I discovered others who were immersed in music and acting and dancing. But the land itself was my friend, and I loved experiencing somebody else's vivid kid world in the woods and fields. The characters are vivid, the plot simple and moving, and the writing is REALLY good. Read this, and you'll be transported to a bittersweet but golden past."

"This poignant novella, "Once Upon a Time in Terre Hill," was full of unexpected surprises! It was "just right" in length and wonderful reading on a snowy afternoon.. The author painted wonderful visuals with his choice of expression--I had the sense of peeking through a window at his childhood adventures and experiences. Several universal themes emerge; childhood naivety, joyful imagination, concepts of freedom, unfairness and cruelty by those who judged what they did not understand, challenges independently-thinking women have faced, damage done by crowd psychology. These are timely themes. Genie's strong and brilliant Mother was a critical thinker who was way ahead of her time--so, of course, she was misunderstood, as many women in herstory have been and continue to be. The persecution she experienced--and by osmosis, her young son--reminded me of influences from classics such as "The Scarlet Letter" and "To Kill a Mockingbird." It was heartening to see them emerge from the fog of ignorance swirling around them in their small town. They were not only exonerated but able to move on with their lives geographically--which was the practical way of handling the situation. Yes, there were difficult experiences and bewilderment at small minded people's nonsense but the resilience of Genie and his Mother overcame all of that."

"Novels that explore childhood and hometown roots abound, but this one is really different! I never knew what was coming next, and it was usually not what I expected. The narrator's tale winds its way through a world that is part surreal, part real, part dream,. I couldn't put it down, It touched my heart, and I didn't want the story to end. Life in 2018 has become so busy and so hyper that it's really refreshing to give the mind a break by taking a journey through a world that is young and fresh and funny. And romantic! Yet this novel is no Pollyanna piece.. There is a poignancy that all who have loved know only too well, and that makes the story, though intriguingly imaginative, true as well. A good read, not too long, not too short, perfect to sit down to in your favorite chair with a cup of afternoon tea."

"I enjoyed the plot, however, needs a good edit in places to make it less like a report. eg the first sentence with 'from 1940-1946' is unnecessary as the next line is 'WWII darkened' The author though paints the world brilliantly."
