Prologue
The blood moon rose over the mist-shrouded peaks of Ravenwood, casting a bruised violet light across a landscape that had known only hatred for three centuries.
On the eastern ridge, the Ironfang pack stood in absolute silence, a tide of muscle, silver-tipped fur, and suppressed fury. At their front stood Caleb, the Alpha—his amber eyes locked on the valley below, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek. He could smell them on the wind: the sharp, metallic tang of ozone and crushed nightshade. Witches.
Down in the basin, huddled around ancient, rune-carved monoliths, the Coven of the Obsidian Veil prepared for the eclipse. At their center stood Lyra, High Priestess and keeper of the flame, her fingers tracing glowing crimson sigils in the air. Her people called the werewolves beasts—mindless, bloodthirsty animals driven by instinct alone.
For generations, the prophecy had been clear: When blood meets ash under the twin eclipses, the final war shall consume the earth, and only one bloodline shall remain.
The screech of a displaced hawk shattered the night. A stray ember floated upward from the coven's fires, catching the wind and drifting toward the ridge. Caleb mistook it for a signal.
"Attack," he growled.
The pack surged down the mountain like an avalanche of thunder and claws. Below, Lyra gasped as the earth trembled beneath her boots. With a sweep of her arms, she unleashed a wall of black fire, a protective barrier meant to incinerate the vanguard.
Instead of turning back, the lead wolf—massive, black-pelted, and impossibly fast—leaped straight through the roaring flames.
Caleb hit the ground rolling, shifting violently back into his human form as he slid across the frost-covered grass, pinning Lyra to the earth beneath him. He expected a dagger, a hex, a curse that would rot his soul. Instead, as his chest heaved against hers and their eyes locked in the chaotic glow of the battlefield, the world abruptly went dead silent.
The fury in his veins didn't vanish—it transmuted. A jolt of pure, white-hot electricity surged from the point of contact between their skin, racing up his arms and flooding his chest.
Lyra’s breath hitched, her spell dissolving into a harmless flurry of sparks. The mark on her collarbone—a dormant coven tattoo she had carried since birth—began to burn with a fierce, golden heat. She looked into his amber eyes and realized with a sickening, terrifying jolt what the elders had never dared to whisper.
They weren't just enemies destined for war. They were mates.
Before either could speak, a second shockwave ripped through the valley. The true enemy—an ancient, forgotten faction that had manipulated both packs and covens into centuries of bloodshed—emerged from the shadows of the forest, turning their weapons toward the ridge and the basin alike.
Caleb rolled off Lyra, extending a calloused hand downward, his gaze shifting from the approaching slaughter back to her face.
"We fight," he said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the undeniable weight of a shared fate.
Lyra took his hand, letting the surge of magic bind their pulse rates together as she pulled herself up beside him. "Then let's show them what happens when we stop fighting each other."
