Summary

When Father Donne is seduced by depravity, he loses a huge bet to the mob and his scheme to pay off fails. He fakes his own death, media spins it as martyrdom, but the Pope and a mutt expose the lie. Deetroit, 1983. Schizoid Father Bernard Donne--one-time choirboy icon, now priest of the blighting Parish--is a brimstone martinet in public, but privately a childish misfit. Recently, he has succumbed to the sardonic seduction of a parish cultist who cultivates his depravity. Soon he needs money to pay his mob gambling debt. Publicly, he hammers about sin. Privately, he steals church moneys.. Alter-ego Bobby Dunbar appears in the mirror to frame innocent monk Henry Ford Raspberry for the grand theft and has him thrown in DeeHoCo jail. The priest appears to call down lightning and converts an atheist stoner, Cal, who works at a dog track, and gets occasional inside tips..The priest claims to gangsters that he gets these tips from God. and a break-the-bank scheme backfires at the crucial moment, costing Tony Boni's associates an unforgivable amount of money. Father Donne fakes his own death and hides with his seductress's cult. The Media spin the fake death into a tale of martyrom, and Donne gets the holiness he craves, but is hidden among Satanists. When the Pope visits Deetroit to honor the phony martyr, Providence and a mutt bring the phony to justice.
