Chapter 1: The Accidents

I used to have dreams and wonders to explore, but now I don’t. Only because of one person. He saved my life. My whole world is different now. And now all I’m doing is sitting here, wondering why that happened.

Okay, I should probably explain. I’m Marie Rose Clapaki. I’m twelve, and am in sixth grade. My best friend and crush Adam Clairedi. We used to be normal kids. But then all that changed.

The multicolor cars of many sizes zoomed across the narrow black road. As usual, Adam and I were walking home together after school.

We stopped at the crosswalk. It was a blur after that. I started to text my parents. I was halfway across when it happened.

“Marie Rose, une voiture arrive! Attention!” I turned. Adam yelled it again. I didn’t understand though.

Next thing I knew, he ran straight at me. He started to push me to the side. Then I saw it. A large truck was coming right for us.

The car hit us, sending Adam and I to the curb. I screamed in agony. The pain was incapacitating.

I looked over at Adam. His breathing was shallow and his eyes were wide.

“Marie Rose,” he said. “I… I…” He never finished the sentence.

I tried to sit up, to reach him, but my head started swimming. The pain was too much. I reached out to him, and fell to the ground, fainting in pain. The last thing I saw was people surrounding us, their speech sounding like gibberish.

I awoke to white. I was in the hospital. I tried to open my eyes, but the blinding light of the room was too much, so I laid back down, drifting into unconsciousness.

At first I didn’t know what was happening. A loud beeping noise was coming from my room. People were yelling demands.

After what I thought was a few minutes later, I woke up.

I tried to yell but I couldn’t. A nurse grabbed my arm asking if I was fine. I didn’t answer.

I glanced up at the clock. One a.m. I’ve been here for six hours. What I did not know was that I “fell asleep” and didn’t wake up for eleven days.

I closed them and listened closed my eyes and listened to the thumping of my heart, the chatter of the nurses. I heard little bits of sentences, but not much.

“His heartbeat is barely there…”

“In a coma…”

“Almost no pulse.”

“He may not make it.” At that, I burst into tears. Adam, he may not- no, I’m not going to think like that. One of the nurses rushed over to soothe me.

“Shh,” she said. “You’re hysterical. You’ve been through a lot. Here, have some tissues.” I threw the tissues on the floor, and tried to jump out of the bed but one of the nurses held me back. The nurse spoke in a calm voice.

“Honey, you have to stay here.” I lay there, tears dripping down my face, when the nurse started to make a call. “Yes Mrs. Clapaki… she’s alright, you may come to see her.” I heard screaming on the phone, hopefully screams of joy.

Ten minutes later my parents arrived. They walked into my room and sat next to me. I struggled to speak but got out a few words.

“I..I’m sor-” My parents silenced me.

“Honey, don’t speak, it’s not your fault.”

After another week, I am finally going to be released from the prison that is St. Lovell Hospital.

I motioned for Adam to follow me. We headed to the room we had stayed in. I’ve decided that I’m going to tell Adam how I feel. I have it all planned out. As soon as my parents drop me off, I’ll walk up to him, and tell him. I hope he likes me back, though.

“Marie Rose? Hello?” Adam waved his hand in front of my face. I looked over, startled. He helped me grab my bag and we started to leave.

When we reached the car I realized my journal must have fallen out.

“I’ll get it.” Said Adam. I watched him leave. I thought about how I should tell Adam that I like him. I really hope Adam loves me back!

Suddenly, I was snapped back to reality. I heard a really loud noise, then smoke and fire clouded my vision. I realized what happened. Adam and I weren’t going to have our romantic scene.

The hospital exploded. With Adam inside.
