Chapter 1

The life in the orphanage was... Rough and that was putting it nicely. There was many unwanted kids, and they were not able to live by themselves until 18. In addition, Lucas and Mercy were two years off from being 18. It is not that they were abused (anymore) by the orphanage people, it is just that the orphanage was poor, and could not afford food for everyone, so most of the food went to the younger kids. Lucas and Mercy got a sandwich a day, if they were lucky.

Anyways, one night they were downstairs getting a drink, because Mercy and Lucas went almost everywhere together. Besides, they would have to go to bed in an hour anyways, when they heard a knock at the door.

“Probably another abandoned baby.” Lucas mumbled, walking to the doorway to watch the receptionist open the door. Then he turned to Mercy, and pointed to the door.

“Mercy, look. It’s a girl around our age.” Mercy finished drinking her water and peeked out from behind Lucas, and grinned. There was a petite girl, with short silver hair pulled into a ponytail, and green eyes. Her scars pulled the grin off Mercy’s face. She had two scars on her face, one across her nose and one on her cheek. And her tan arms and legs were littered with the pale lines. The receptionist caught sight of the two, and beckoned them over to the new girl.

“Lucas, Mercy, this is Catalina. She’s 15, and has moved from an orphanage in Spain.” The woman explained, and told the two to show her to the rooms. Catalina walked silently behind them, and they led her to the kitchen.

“I sleep in the kitchen?” She asked, with no hint of an accent, which surprised the two, but they grinned at her.

“We thought you were hungry. And we wanted to ask you some questions, if that’s okay?” they held their breath, as she stared blankly at them, before grinning.

“Sure, go ahead.”
