Olivia

I heard my bedroom door open to reveal my mother standing in the doorway with a basket of clothes ready to be ironed tucked under her arm.

“Kellie’s here. I’ve just sent her up to your room,” Mum said. “If you need me, I’ll be in the laundry,”

“Okay, thanks, mum.” I smiled as I placed a John Green book back on my bedside table.

Kellie soon popped her head round my bedroom door.

“Hey, girl.” She greeted as she jumped onto my bed.

“Hello,” I say as I sat myself up.

“You haven’t seen my Instagram or Snapchat stories yet, have you?” She asked, resting her hands on her chin as she laid on the bed, so she was facing me.

“No, didn’t really go on my phone much after we had tea,” I replied.

“Okay good, I wanted to show you my new hair in person,” she smiled as she adjusted the black baseball cap she was wearing. “Are you ready?”

“Ready as I’ll ever be,” I answered,

She took off the black cap and let her hair fall from its previous position under her cap. Her newly bleach blonde hair piled just under her chest and Kellie repositioned the cap back onto her head.

“So, what do you think?” She smiled as she flicked some of her hair over her right shoulder.

“It actually suits you. I really like it.” I said. “Why the change?”

“I just felt like doing something new to my hair before school goes back. Plus, it’s gonna be a whole lot easier to dye my hair when I randomly feel like dying it whatever colour.” She answered, pulling her phone out of her short pocket and checking the time.

“That’s not all you came over for, is it?” I asked her, raising an eyebrow at her.

“No, of course not. I came over to ask you if you were doing anything today and if you weren’t, I was wondering if you wanted to hang.” She replied, sitting up and dangling her legs over the edge of the bed.

“Ooh, I’ll have to check my hectic schedule and maybe cancel some serious plans.” I joked, grabbing my phone to access the calendar.

“My god.” She grinned as she slowly shook her head.

“Looks like you’re in luck today, got nothing planned.” I smiled, placing my phone beside me on the bed. “What were you thinking?”

“So, because school goes back in a couple of weeks and to enjoy these last few weeks of summer, I suggest that we go down to the beach to get our tan on so we end our hashtag hot girl summer looking super cute.” She suggested, sassily clicking her fingers,

“Okay, well I’m assuming your already prepared, right?” I questioned, slightly tilting my head.

“Yeah, I’m already wearing my bikini under this. I was hoping you’d say yes so I wouldn’t need to change.” She answered, indicating to the white sundress she was wearing which you could just see the black bikini she was wearing underneath,

“Okay, well give me like ten to fifteen minutes, and I’ll be out,” I say, slowly ushering Kellie out of my bedroom and closing the door behind her.

I took off the nightie I was wearing and placed it beside my pillows before walking over to my dresser and pulling out my bather draw. I grabbed my red bikini with various shaped white polka dots and chucked them onto my bed. I opened my wardrobe door and pulled out the coat hanger, which had my denim overalls on it.

I took off the underwear I was wearing and threw them on top of my clothes hamper. I changed into the bikini and stepped into the overalls. I slid my feet into some sandals, grabbed my black floppy hat and a tote bag for me to put some essentials items inside.

I opened the door, and just as I stepped out of my room, the bathroom door opened with Kellie stepping out.

“We ready?” She asked.

“We are,” I replied. “Just let me tell my mum what we’re doing.”

“Yeah, no worries.” She smiled. “I’ll be in the car.”

I headed towards the laundry while Kellie exited the house through the front door to wait in her car. Mum had the ironing board folded out, slowly making progress on the basket of clothes positioned on top of the washing machine. She had the radio on which was counting down the top twenty-five hits of the eighties.

“Mum,” I stated, wanting to get her attention.

“Hmm, yes?” She asked.

“Kellie and I were just gonna go down to the beach today,” I told her.

“Yeah that’s fine, you’ll text me when you’re leaving?” She confirmed as she folded a pair of pants.”

“Yeah, I will. I always do.” I smiled at her.

“Okay, did you want some lunch before you left or were you getting some down at the beach?” Mum asked, standing the iron up.

“We’re probably getting some down at the beach,” I replied.

“Okay, no worries. If you need anything, the boys and I will be here at home, and John’s just at work.” She smiled.

“Okay, thanks, mum.” I smiled back.

“Have fun.”

I left the house and hopped into the passenger side of Kellie’s car. It’s a Toyota Highlander which her father bought her as a late birthday present once she obtained her learner’s permit to drive. She already had her phone connected to the radio via Bluetooth and had her summer Spotify playlist playing.

“Let’s go!” She grinned as she slid on cat-eye sunnies and began to drive off to the beach.

It was only a thirty-minute drive before we reached the beach, although it did take Kellie a couple of minutes before we finally found a park. We grabbed our bags, got out of the car and headed towards the fish and chips store to grab some lunch.

Once we took our order of a large chips, we began to look for a nice sunny spot on the beach where we could relax.

“HEADS!” A masculine voice called out.

I turned around and saw a volleyball coming straight towards Kellie and I. In a sudden attempt to try and catch the ball. I accidentally dropped the takeaway box of chips, making them spill on the sand but surprisingly, I ended up catching the volleyball.

“OLIVIA! The chips!” Kellie complained.

Obsidian: I liked the story. It was great in its own way. I'm the type that likes the night clubs, the cities, the dark allies. It might be a little on the light side for me (the other side would be the dark side) but overall, its a good read. Also, a little short, but as a writer who tends to rush things mys...
