Mother's Curls

Most little girls dreamed of castles and pearls

Of worlds where princes and dragons

Battled for the fate of the locked up maiden

Whose only form of escape was to let down her hair

Rapunzel with her long, golden locks

Jasmine with her velvety, dark mane

Women of beauty and strength

With a sound hair-care regimen

All heroines of a child whose dreams were shattered

When she realized it took more than shampoo and willpower

To attain that level of perfection, and for all her dedication

Would never master the beast resting atop her head

The friction and excitement that lived in her

Could not be internally contained

And the frizz that sprouted from all sides in a spur

Soon became her young life’s bane

She tried with all her might

To banish those impossible knots

Ripping out fistfuls of hair

More often than not

She cried and she screamed

When her mother tried to reassure

Her of the way things were

Like her mother before her

But as soon as she could that little girl began to hide

With heat and lies what had been her family’s pride

Damaging, with no care, her young and luscious hair

Banishing thoughts of reluctance for the sake of acceptance

It wasn’t until much much later, no longer a little girl

Now a woman in her stead with a strong and cared-for head

That she saw how a world of fantasy

One of princesses and pearls

Would never in a million years

Satisfy all her fears

And would never in the world

Be worth sacrificing

Her mother’s lovely curls

mariedavismd312: This was Avery spiritual read. The last 2 chapters where very disappointing. That was such a let down unless there is a sequel. Burgess should have been punished for what he did. There was no explanation for his hatred for Jeremiah. I figured he was being set but just had the wrong person. I loved ...
