Chapter 1- Prologue
5 years
It’s been 5 whole years since that night. 4 years and 364 days since I woke up cold and alone and Mia was gone. Just gone from my life without any notice, without saying anything.
I would've been calling the police if it hadn’t been for her mother or her friends. They all knew where she was, but they wouldn’t tell me.
It was the worst kind of torchure. Mia was somewhere out there in the world and for whatever reason she didn’t want me to find her. It felt like a knife in my heart every single fucking day. But it was worse around this time of year. The anniversary of her departure was a time I reserved for getting absolutely wasted.
That day and what was suppose to be our wedding day were sacred to me. It was a time I spent alone mallowing in my own thoughts. It wasn’t healthy. Leo had told me that a few times but I just couldn’t get her out of my head. Out of my heart and it fucking sucked.
When it all went down it was like the media had hit a gold mine. They had all these wild theories about what had happened to her. I think some had even managed to track her but she managed to silence them... at least from me. I don’t know how she did that, I’ve been trying to silence the media for years hasn’t ever worked.
I grab a bottle of liquor from my cabinet. I wonder how many drinks it would take me to forget her...
I was halfway through my third drink when I heard the front door open and shut... who the fuck would-
“Luke!” Ava screams into the house. I groan, I told Ava to stay away from me tonight. That girl just doesn’t catch a hint. Maybe if I’m silent enough she will go away?
But sadly I was very very wrong. In fact she found me almost straight away. She had these dark forest green eyes that she shared with her Brother and Nephew. They slowly racked my figure. I had to stop myself shivering in disgust. Don’t get me wrong, Ava is extremely beautiful with her eyes and platinum bleached hair that always hung down like a shaggy dog. She was short, though she was constantly in monster high heels. She has a very slim and curvy body. I’ve dated Ava, I know how obsessed she is with the way she looks. Babe seemed to of put in extra effort tonight.
But this is Mia’s night. My night to morn Mia and she knows that. But she just can’t stay away from me. I don’t have the heart to push her away and sometimes her attempts can be nice and distracting.
Ava glares at me. I’m not too sure if she’s going to jump me or lecture me. Either way I’m not drunk enough to endure it.
“Why are you her Ava.” I mutter, turning away from her to stare at the tiles in my kitchen. I’ve learnt that when you don’t look at her she skips all the bullshit and tells you what you need to know. It’s a vanity thing.
“What are you doing Luke?” She snaps. Her acrylic nails tap impaciently on the counter. I tip my head far enough to catch her eye, just for a moment. She is P I S S E D.
“I’m drinking. You weren’t invited but you already know where the door is.” I snarl, taking another huge swig of whisky. The alcohol hits my system and I sigh in reflief, finally some support to deal with this bullshit.
“You’re mopping about Mia again?” The tone in her voice is a deathly kind of bitter.“It’s been five years Luke for fuck sake. Get over her. She’s not coming back.”
She grabs my shoulder and turns me around, sharply. I grunt slightly at the force. Ava grabs my chin forcing me to look her dead in the eye ”We’re leaving for the UK in a few days. Remember that anonymous charity gala in London... that you organised?”
“Yes I fucking remember Ava.” I snap at her. ”I just need one night to be miserable alright. One night .”
Her hand slapped me across the cheek, the alchol numbed the sting a little but that didn’t stop the shock from pulsing through my body.
“I get it Luke you loved her. But she left you. So you need to grow the fuck up and start dealing with it.”
Her words hit me like a bolder. I was fucking dealing with it. What does she know?
“You need to pack you’re bags and sober up in the next few days. I’m picking you up at 9.”
Then she turned and left. You wanna know who else turned and left?
Mia.
