Chapter 1

“Class, turn to page 64,” my Geography teacher half yelled to the class.

I am in my 3rd class session and feeling bored already.

“On Friday,” she continued, “I want everyone to be here at 8am, any later and the bus will leave you behind…”

She continued talking as I started to think about Friday. We had a field trip planned to visit an “enchanted” forest two states over. I love nature and being in the open, but for some reason each time I think of the trip I get a weird feeling in my chest, I just couldn’t pin and this has been happening for over a week. I suddenly ignored it as I usually do and started thinking of how I would feel so free in the woods.

“…Nea!”

“Zinea, earth to!” shouted Cassie, she realized I’d been day dreaming and got my attention back to the project at hand.

Cassie was practically the only friend I had at school. We did almost everything together until it was time for me to return to my humble abode, if that term can even be used to describe my rather desolate orphanage. We were the same age and had been friends since middle school. Sometimes I wonder if we remained friends because she felt pity for me, I did talk to others, when it was necessary but they all still kept their distance in some way.

The tintinnabulation of the school bell signaled the end of this session and we started departing from class and headed for lunch.

“So are you excited for the trip on Friday?” Cassie asked as we walked to our seats in the cafeteria.

“Of course I am. I can’t wait, you know I go crazy for nature and open spaces,” I informed her as my mind drifted to the weird feeling I’ve been having at the mention of the field trip.

I guess she realized what happened because she startled me with her question, “Do you think they may stop you from going?” she asked.

“Huh?” I had no idea what she’s talking about.

“Your orphan mothers I mean, do you think they will prevent you from going? Each time the topic of field trip comes up I see the worried expression written all over you.”

“No. No, they won’t, besides, that hasn’t happened in a long while.”

The orphan mothers used to be against going out at times, even though it was only school trips or adventures for whatever reason. Otherwise I wasn’t allowed to go anywhere else, just school to home.

“Actually Cassie, there’s a weird feeling I’ve been getting ever since we planned the trip, but I have no idea what it is.”

“Ok, well maybe it’s nothing, don’t worry about it.”

We swiftly collected our lunch and ate while chatting about current affairs and school matters.

The next three sessions went by pretty fast with Cassie and I getting separated for our last class.
