Chapter 1
Xavier's Pov
“You’re fired, get out now,” I yelled angrily, my voice laced with the annoyance that had been building for weeks. My frustration was still bubbling beneath the surface as I watched my assistant storm out of my office. It wasn’t just this one incident that had pushed me over the edge; it was a culmination of her constant mistakes and a blatant disregard for the importance of her role.
Before she left, she shot me an angry, defiant glance that only served to fuel my anger even further. If she hadn’t been a woman, I might have considered plucking both eyeballs from their sockets for giving me that insolent look. I despise employees like her – those who believe they can get away with anything, including ruining a key contract for our company.
This wasn’t the first time she had let me down, but it was certainly the last straw. She had not only cost us a significant deal, but she had also had the audacity to suggest that she could make amends by “pleasing” me. The mere thought of it sent shivers of anger down my spine. I couldn’t believe my ears.
In my years of running this company, I had always been extremely strict about maintaining clear boundaries between professional and personal life. I never allowed any hint of impropriety to tarnish my reputation or that of my company. Did she think so little of me? Did she think I would compromise my principles for her or anyone else?
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying I’m not interested in women. Far from it. I have my desires and attractions like any other man.
But she was my personal assistant. The person who was supposed to have my back, manage my schedule, and ensure the smooth operation of my professional life. I couldn’t afford to compromise the integrity of our professional relationship, and I certainly couldn’t entertain any notion of mixing business with pleasure.
In my frustration, I pulled out my phone from my pocket and dialed the one person I trusted more than anyone else in the world – my secretary, Mr. Luis Frank Roma. He answered on the first ring, as though he had been expecting my call.
“Uncle Luis, can you please come to my office right now?” I spoke in a stern voice, my irritation still evident.
The door swung open almost immediately, and he walked in, his presence as calming as ever. I hung up the call, and he stood before me, his face a mask of concern.
My secretary, Mr. Luis Frank Roma, was the only person who was permitted to enter my office at any time without an excuse. He had been my father’s secretary and his closest friend, and I’d known him since I was a child. He was more than an employee; he was family. I owed him more than I could ever repay.
He spoke carefully, choosing his words with the wisdom that came from years of experience. “Is everything all right, Xavier?”
I nodded, trying to regain some semblance of composure. “Should I notify HR to start interviewing for a new PA?” he asked, his eyes searching mine for answers.
I considered it for a moment. “Yes, uncle. Please tell them to put up the ad. I’ll interview the candidates myself.”
Uncle Luis nodded in agreement and left my office, leaving me alone with my thoughts. The best thing I could do this time was to hire a male assistant. That would eliminate any possibility of the kind of situation that had just transpired. It was a practical solution, one that would help me maintain the strict boundaries I had always upheld.
But as I sat there, alone in my office, I couldn’t help but wonder if hiring a male assistant was truly the solution to my current predicament. Perhaps it was time for me to reevaluate my strict professional boundaries, to consider that sometimes unexpected connections could lead to something beautiful. After all, life had a way of surprising you when you least expected it.
I decided to take a break from the chaos that had consumed my morning. I needed a moment to clear my head and regain my focus. That’s when I thought of Clarissa, my best friend since college. She was the one person who could always make me forget my problems, the one who could bring a smile to my face even in the darkest of times.
With renewed determination, I picked up my phone and quickly dialed her number. After a few rings, she answered, her cheerful voice a stark contrast to my current mood.
“Hey, Xavier, what’s going on?” Her voice was warm and inviting, a welcome relief from the tension that had filled my office just moments ago.
“Clarissa, you won’t believe what just happened,” I began, recounting the entire episode with my assistant, the ruined contract, and her audacious offer to “please” me to make amends.
Clarissa chuckled on the other end. “Well, that’s certainly an interesting turn of events. But seriously, Xavier, you need to relax. Let’s meet up for lunch, my treat. I’ll bring some humor and sanity back into your life.”
Her offer was exactly what I needed, and I agreed without hesitation. We set a time and place to meet, and I felt a glimmer of hope returning to my day.
As I hung up the phone, I couldn’t help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, it was time for me to reconsider my stance on keeping my professional and personal lives separate. Perhaps there was room for unexpected connections and surprising moments in my carefully structured world. But for now, I looked forward to a lunch date with my best friend, hoping that her infectious laughter would wash away the frustrations of the morning and bring a little more clarity to my life.
