Rain Is A Good Thing

Loki always liked the rain.

Jade eyes would watch as the drops of water splattered against the windows like translucent paint, and keen ears would listen as the rain pattered and hit the roof. Sensitive fingers would touch the coldness of the glass, and warm breath would fog the windows.

Loki always liked the rain.

He watched in silence as lightning flashed and strikes the Earth mercilessly, and he listened as thunder roared like distant drums in his ears. Loki closed his eyes, a sad smile upon his lips. A resigned sigh slipped through said lips, the only sound beside the soft patter of rain droplets hitting anything they came in contact with.

Loki always liked the rain.

It rarely stormed in Asgard, but when it did, they were huge, terrifying monsters who swirled over the land and during that time, Asgard knew no mercy. But nature has always fascinated Loki, how the winds could be gentle and the colors could be beautiful, and then without warning, all could go to Hel.

Loki always liked the rain.

“Loki?”

Loki’s smile turned more genuine. “Hello, darling,”

Warm arms wrap around the tops of his shoulders, a head rests upon his. The familiar pale hands are clasped together on his chest, right beneath his collarbone. Loki sighs, closing his eyes and leaning against Sigyn. His head hits Sigyn’s shoulder. Loki turned his face to nuzzle his lover’s neck.

“Enjoying the rain, my love?” his husband whispers in his ear, his gentle voice fading in with the rain.

“Sometimes,” Loki murmurs, tilting his back to stare into Sigyn’s deep raspberry eyes, “ I can feel him this way. Like he never left.” The familiar aching sadness fills his soul, stringing endlessly as the broken pieces of his heart.

Sigyn’s gentle hands caress his face, trailing over the bridge of his nose and the edge of his jaw. Loki’s eyes flutter closed again, his mouth falling open with bliss and a sigh escaping his lips.

“Hmm,” Loki breathes, leaning in to rest his forehead against Sigyn’s

A soft chuckle meet Loki’s ears, and he cherishes the sound. “Loki.” he almost hears the smile in Sigyn’s voice.

“Sigyn.” he whispers back.

Warm lips meet his own, moving tenderly and gently. Loki kisses him back, his body aching for his touch. Thunder crashes in the background, and the urge suddenly disappears. Loki pulls back, biting his lip and squeezing his eyes shut.

“You miss him,” Sigyn whispers, running his fingers through Loki’s raven hair.

Loki slumps against his husband, his head once again finding his shoulder. “More than anything.”

“It wasn’t your fault, Loki. I can see the guilt in your eyes.” he says, massaging Loki’s scalp gingerly. Sigyn’s hand comes to rest at the base of his neck. The action was so achingly familiar that it made Loki’s heart clench.

“My brother would still be alive if I had gotten there in time.” Loki whispers, and it’s the truth.

You’ll always be too late, Loki. It all your fault Thor’s dead. YOUR FAULT —

“Maybe. Maybe not.” Sigyn murmurs. “We tried our best to save him. And for Thor, I think that’s good enough for him.”

Loki sighs, sounding awfully like a strangled sob. “But it isn’t good enough for me. It should have been me, Sigyn. Me! Not Thor. He was” — that word come out ragged and choked — “ a stupid, mindless oaf. A fucking idiot. A self-sacrificing fool. A liar. He promised he wouldn’t leave me ever again. And you know what he did only a day later?”

Loki knew he was ranting, and Sigyn made no more to stop him. So he kept going.

He left me! Sigyn, he left me when I needed him most. It’s only a matter of time before you leave me too. In the end, that’s what they all do. Everyone I’ve ever loved has left me. When will you leave me, Sigyn?”

By the time Loki finished, tears were rolling down his cheeks like rain and his shoulders shook with the force of his sobs.

Wordlessly, Sigyn embraces his love as tightly as he could, slowly rocking him beck and forth while rubbing his back in soothing circles.

“Shh. . . I am here, my love. My beautiful and wonderful Loki. I will never leave you. I love you too much.” Sigyn whispers into Loki’s black curls. Loki’s hands clutched at his shirt and his legs wrapped around his waist. His head was buried in Sigyn’s chest, not that he cared. Sigyn pressed a kiss to his temple, nuzzling his nose in Loki’s hair.

“I love you.” Sigyn repeats.

Loki sobs, tears running shamelessly down his face. Sigyn kisses them away, and the pure love and affection Loki feels as Sigyn kisses him makes him cry harder.

“I l-love you t-too.” Loki cries, taking hold of his husband’s face and pulling him down for a kiss. Their lips moved gently and softly. They held each other’s faces, one perfectly dry and the other damp with tears. They kiss until their lungs burn from lack of oxygen.

They pull away from each other, panting and breathless and smiling. Loki closed his eyes, moving his head to bury it in the crook of Sigyn’s neck.

“I miss him too.” Sigyn says after a while.

Loki always liked the rain.

And above the clouds and in Valhalla, Thor smiles and thunder cracks.

I miss you too.” the words are so faint and quiet in the wind that Loki thinks he misheard them. But the voice sounded so much like Thor’s. He picks his head up from Sigyn’s shoulder, his jade eyes finding the window. Lightning flashes and thunder roars.

Loki always liked the rain.

He smiles, because deep down he knows, Thor never really left him at all.
