Summary

Follow one man’s coming-of-age journey as he contemplates the meaning of success amid an era of banking fraud. It’s the Summer of 2004, where ethical and naïve Jacob Gilbert is thrown into a pool of greed, materialism, and shady business dealings as he enters his first year in banking. While trying to manage his career and demanding social life including new quirky friends and a questionable romantic partner, Jacob languishes at the bottom of the stack rankings month after month. How can he turn his career into a success while still maintaining his soul? The pressure is on. Just how strong are Jacob’s morals under the influence of ruthless corporate management? In what some readers call “docu-fiction,” The Good Banker illustrates nuances of the 2008 economic meltdown. With suspense, sharp wit, and internal dialogue, the author skillfully weaves threads of ethics, commitment, friendship, and success throughout the fast-paced, high-stakes world of finance. Through Jacob’s eyes, we see the possibilities of what genuine success looks like and how to walk that thin line between greed and good deeds.

Prologue

A chill is in the air as I sit on a wooden balcony, enjoying my morning coffee. I drink in the scene below—a sapphire blue lake nestled at the bottom of a cliff; a sharp ridgeline warms with the glow of the rising sun. A million-dollar view is in front of me, and millions of dollars sit in my bank account.

I contemplate success. What does it really mean? How is it defined? For some, success means winning more of life’s challenges than losing. For others, it’s having a certain amount of zeros in their net worth. Does success mean performing well in your profession to earn various awards? Is it having a loving family? Is it being a well-respected member of your community or having a large circle of friends? Perhaps it means having the freedom to do what you want at any given point in time.

I’ve often struggled to define success for myself, which is why I need to tell my story for the greater good of society and for the “little guys” working within behemoth corporations.

In this quiet morning light, I enjoy the sunrise and ponder the meaning of success while looking over this surreal body of water. I am reminded of the first day of my banking career, July 15th, 2004. I walked into the 41st floor of One Brickell Tower in Miami, Florida.
