Chapter 1

“You’re fired!”

“Well, damn. I wasn’t planning on lasting longer than an hour.”

“Get out of my office, Alek!”

“Aye, captain!”

I walked out of his office and headed to mine. I watched as my things got thrown out of my office. When I peeked in, a book was flying straight towards me. When I thought all was lost-my teeth I mean- the book landed right in front of me. I let out a sigh of relief.

“What are you doing with my things, Smith?”

“I’m taking your office, Knighton. It appears that you aren’t going to be working here anymore. I took my chances,” he shrugged.

“What? Do you have supersonic hearing now?” I joked.

“Oh my god, Alek. Why did he fire you?” my friend, Anne, asked.

“For being handsome. Can you help me with my things?”

“Sure. You’re my friend after all.”

We picked up the things that Smith threw out of the office. Anne told me she had feelings for me and now she’s emphasizing on the word “friend”. I just can’t think of her as more than a friend. I felt like I was leading her on, now that I think back. The sleep overs, cuddling, and feeding her. Makes me cringe just thinking about it.

I put them into my bag and Anne walked to the door with me. I reached for the door handle and a hand was placed onto mine. It treaded up my arm and I gulped. I knew exactly who it was.

“You’re not gonna leave without kissing me goodbye, are you?” Janine asked.

“What? I’m not leaving. I’m taking my things outside to replace them with better stuff.”

“Oh. I thought you got fired.” She laughed, “Silly of me to think such things of you.”

“I should go before they close,” I rushed out the door before she could reply.

Thank god for speed. I unlocked the door to my car and placed my things in the back seat. Well, on to my interview that should be starting in about five minutes. I have enough time to get to the short cut. I swerved out of my parking spot and nearly hit another car.

I know I’m not good at lying, but I am good at speeding. Which is why I’m about to get a ticket at this very moment. So much for getting to that interview on time. I pulled out my license and watched the officer in my rearview mirror. Boy did she look good in that uniform.

She stood at the door, “Alek, this is your fourth ticket. You know I was supposed to have arrested you?” She took out her pad.

“Come on, Grace. I WAS trying to get to an interview and now I’m late.”

She tapped the pad, “I’m sure I heard that once before.”

“I just got fired…again. I was looking forward to this new job, you know?” I crossed my arms.

“You won’t get a job if you keep speeding and getting fired,” she pointed out.

I knew she was right, but the least I could do was try, “Give me a break just this one time. If-emphasis on the if- I speed again, you can give me that ticket and arrest me.”

“Don’t go back on your word,” she hit the roof of my car.

“Watch the paint, Gracie,” I started my car and drove off.

Lucky for me I have another interview. I wasn’t actually expected to make it to any of them so I applied for many jobs. If I couldn’t make it to one, I could try and make it to the other. I had a minute left to get into the building that I just pulled up to. I can’t afford to miss this one or get fired again.

I ran into the building, “Are they still doing interviews?” I asked the receptionist.

“No, sir. They already hired their interns,” she replied.

I hit the counter scaring the receptionist, “젠장.”(jenjang-damn it)

A door opened nearby, “Alek…sander Knighton?”

My name is Aleksander Knighton. I am the owner and CEO of Knighton Enterprises. You might be wondering how I, the guy that can’t keep a job, is a former CEO. I will be honored to tell you my story. That is, if you will sit back, relax, and listen to my story.

“It’s Alexsander.”

“Oh, we weren’t sure when you would show up since we looked at your previous jobs,” he walks over to me, “Liam Molchalin,” he holds out his hand.

I shake it, “I haven’t heard much about you, but there were some things said.”

“Good things, I hope,” he laughed, “If you would come right this way, we’ll get you started.”

I followed behind him through large double doors. Everyone was as busy as bees moving here and there. It reminded me of the newspaper company I used to work at. A few people waved at me and others glared, but I didn’t see why. I followed Liam to someone’s office.

“Shane?”

“Oh, good morning, sir,” Shane stood up behind his desk and bowed.

“Wait, you’re the boss? Interesting.”

He chuckles, “This is the intern that you will be working with,” he turns to me, “if you ever need assistance on anything, you will go to Shane,” he walked out.

“Yes, sir,” I called out.

I looked at Shane and then at myself who wasn’t dressed to impress. Who knows what I’ll come across in this building. I sat down at my desk and looked over at Shane. He was busy with paperwork and something else on his computer. I awkwardly looked around the office.

I cleared my throat, “Would you mind telling me what I should do?”

“Oh right,” he laughed, “We aren’t doing the same thing everyone else is doing. It may look like it, but I’m really trying to find out who’s stealing from the company.”

“Cool, but why you?”

“I’m his most trusted worker. I suppose you are to help me, since he did put you in here.”

“Alright, so you just monitor the finances of the company?”

“That’s right. If the money decreases, I have to inform Liam and he’ll find out why it decreased. He doesn’t just go up and ask who used the money. He finds out where the money went and then he’ll confront the user. If the money is really low, I’ll tell him right away and he’ll automatically get the bottom of it,” he continues, ”There was this one tim-”

I yawned on accident and quickly closed my mouth.

“I’m talking too much, aren’t I?”

“Actually, I find it fascinating that you are so hard working.”

“That’s a first. I really had no one to tell these things to,” he confessed.

“No one knows what you do?” I asked.

He shook his head, “No one, but the boss. I should probably get you set up,” he comes to my desk, “As you know my name is Shane.”

“Aleksander or Alek for short.”

“Alright Alek, pay close attention. This right here,” he directs the mouse across the screen to an icon, “Is a coverup. Someone will see it as one thing when it’s another,” he clicks on it.

“Is this the monitoring screen?” I sat up straighter.

“Yes, but that isn’t the best part. Watch this,” Shane typed a few letters onto the screen and a coding system came up, “This is the code room. I had no other name for it.”

“Don’t worry. I like it because it’s simple.”

He stood behind me, showing me where everything is, “Now, if you need anything…”
