Prologue: Discovery of Uncertainty_1
On a distant Nebula system, Messier 1, NGC 1952, Taurus A, Sh2-244_(Crab Nebula) a mysterious derelict meteor outpost drifted afloat the gassy stardust. A tall signal spire atop the asteroid periodically flashed red streaks of light. The run-down ring structure that sustained stationed inhabitants began to crumble as large chunks of debris fell and drift into space. Once part of the glorious megastructure is now falling into pieces. The continuous collapse of the building sent shockwaves throughout space. Emanating as each debris drifts farther and farther away.

"This is no good... I already forgot the morse code. Damn, I should have paid more attention during training." a silhouette behind the control deck disgruntled, heaved a heavy sigh.
"AIDa, translate the received message into English. Translating this code will give me an additional headache and I still have so much to do." he sat back sipping a hot cup of chocolate.
"Affirmative, Sir Samuel. Translating MORSE-into-ENGLISH"

“I have successfully pinged the Outpost: Messier 1.7. Its located on the outskirts of the Crab Nebula system. Locking coordinates and initiating redirection.” A robotic voice chimed through the speakers of the frigate spaceship.
“Finally, we pinged its location. We’ve been circling this nebula system for months. The Confederation hadn’t exactly pinpointed the exact coordinates, but I guess this lead will do for now...” the silhouette, leaned forward revealing a middle-aged man behind the main control deck. He exclaimed as he was holding a cup of hot cocoa. After accelerating the main thrusters located at the main control deck, he sat down left pondering and planning, the next course of action upon reaching the outpost.
Sadly the outpost is located on the outskirts of this local nebula group, far east of their current position.
Standing up whilst holding the mug, he walked from the main atrium and strategy hub located at the center of the ship towards the left-wing. Hallway doors open automatically as he trudged through the semi-messy hallways. A few documents and research transcripts are neatly piled near the side next to the succeeding hallway door.
The sight of piled papers on the side, made him rethink his current crew. Nonetheless, he sighed in defeat. He initially planned to check on Captain Jesse but decided to plan on Captain Connor first. He took a small detour toward the auxiliary kitchen. Upon entering the room, A large grey island with overhead lights shone through the busy Connor, wearing his jumpsuit with dark blue hoddie one and flip-flops. Busy reading various documents regarding alien lifeforms, with a few scribbled notes laid on the table. The man went to the large counter and opened an overhead pantry cabinet. He grabbed mint sprinkles and marshmallow from it. He proceeded to re-fill his nearly empty mug from the electromagnetic field-heated electric water kettle. Poured three scoops of ”Millo" with extra milk on them. A moment of bliss as the aroma of hot chocolate made the man smile with delight. Leaning on the counter, almost directly behind the preoccupied captain, he huffed in disbelief wondering how he had not felt his presence?
"Your research documents are left in front of the hallway auxiliary room door. Could you please relocate them into the study or better, in your messy room?" he said sipping his chocolate drink.
It broke his flow and jolted with the sudden voice behind his back.
"Don’t just sneak up on anyone like that..." he responded frowning. He cleared his throat and scratch his head out of irritation.
"Yes, I shall take those papers into the study. Later... after I finish this one.” he raspily said while chugging a half-filled mug into his throat.
“Since when were you working with this. You need a break bud.” he patted him on the back.
“Nah, these reports are due tomorrow. The confederation wants me to get these analyzed and complied, for the principal biologists to review, commander.”
“Are you sure, you managed your time properly? Or you rushed things?” the commander with a questioning tone.
“No, my plans are perfect, and I value efficiency as much as I value new-found knowledge. It’s just that these new findings from our excursions needed compiling and archiving. Plus the amount of additional data sent by my juniors need to be re-analyzed and reviewed before sending this to the Confederation server.”
The commander pitied him, as he sipped his chocolate drink. ”What alien flora are you studying then?" he asked.
"Alien fauna....I was just studying the biology of Megaptera novaeangliae-ventiscaelum, or “Empyrean Humpbacks”. These colossal giants are somewhat similar to oceanic earth whales but larger by tenfold. Spanning approximately 150-220 meters and weighing 250 - 300 tonnes. It’s easily the largest aerial predator on planet Ventus. With large mouth containing baleens used to catch aerial fauna like cloustriders and galewingers. It has 4 flippers, used for steering and thrust as this large behemoth soar through the thick gassy atmosphere. Large pods of Empyrean Humpbacks can reach group sizes varying from 3 to 20 per pod, and nest in the mesosphere. Occasionally, pods can go lower into the stratosphere to feed. They are in a symbiotic relationship with Empyrean Mantas, and Ethereal Angelspears; Manta birostris-ventiscaelum, and Angelus hastam-decabrachia respectively. Additionally..." Connor continued to explain with enthusiasm to the middle-aged man who is avidly listening to him while sipping the beverage. He listened to him until he finished his monologue.
"Hmm, I see... Fascinating. These are Juveniles, right? I’m not surprised that I’ve taken a liking to one of your biology classes." the commander picked one of the pictures portraying the Sky Humpbacks, internally nodding with Connor’s statement.
"It does resemble oceanic earth whales... Anyways, did you check the specimens in the experiments room?" he asked.
"Yes, Samuel. I made my rounds already last evening and this morning. They are fine, vitals are stable and no anomalies are found. Chill..." Connor stated in frustration as he got back into reading.
“I know your situation is pretty grim, but please refrain from mentioning my name when we’re on a mission. Mind you if you could call me commander, Captain Connor. Even without the whole crew, let’s address each other with our rankings and maintain the air of professionalism." Samuel gruffed with authority.
"Yeah, yeah" He grunted and lifted his hand, flicking his fingers in agreement.
"If you searching for your notebook commander, Captain Jesse might have it. She’s at her usual spot." Connor pointed and Samuel nodded.
Holding his refilled cup, he walked towards the main atrium and into the mechanics and robotics department located on the right-wing. Hallway doors opened, as the commander proceeded straight to the Robotics department.
On the way through, a thick alumino-silicate glass pane spans the entire hallway towards the right-wing. Commander Samuel slowed his pace and admired the space dust swirling amongst the empty space.
"Gorgeous..." as he stood there for a second in awe. Bluish sapphire-to-emerald gas clouds refracted the light of a nearby protostar, covering the bland gray ship with an array of variegated colors, as the ship cruised through it. While distant meteoroids rich in silica littered the background blending with the red gassy clouds instead. The illuminated display of wonder took him into a trance which lasted for a few moments
Snapping from the trance, he sipped his chocolate drink and walked to the right-wing. Hallway doors open as distant fizzling and popping can be heard at an open section door. With bright flashes lasting for seconds at intervals. He continued to sip his drink as he walked.
Upon reaching the Robotics and Mechanics Department, he caught a black-haired woman in sleek black-grey fitted jumpsuit wear with a welding mask on. Looking down, he saw a dropped bright yellow outlined cape jacket on the floor. The captain leaned onto the hallway door as he began aggressively sipping his cocoa. In turn, the woman aggressively started to weld the metal. The showdown lasted for a minute before the commander drank all of his cocoa. Placing his mug on a nearby workbench, he picked up the dropped jacket and placed it on a chair. The woman stopped welding, removed her gloves, and placed them on the workbench.
"Busy?" the commander chuckled as he approached what the woman has worked on. ”Obviously, I have already fixed some of the damaged valves of the nuclear coolant. It’s already overdue, and ignoring it would cause leakage. A major hazard.” as she wiped the sweat from her forehead.
"Why aren’t you wearing the mandatory, welding suits? It would’ve burned you." Commander Samuel, stated as he was inspecting the valves.
"Don’t worry about it. I have ARMAS with me, she did most of the protecting. Speaking of which, ARMAS deactivate bio-shields." she stated while arranging the tools she used for welding and mending.
Her left arm started to glow as the attached tech, responded with an ”Affirmative...“. The bio-shields can be seen slowly disappearing with faint yellow particles drifting. After which, she grabbed the cape-jacket and began wearing it. ”I’m done welding for today. If you’re finding your notebook, I left it near the experiments and specimens room. Don’t worry I didn’t take anything in there." as she walked past him and through the main atrium. The commander soon followed her.
As the two went into the main atrium, Commander Samuel checked his ARMAS for any updates.
"ARMAS, link to AIDa’s mainframe."
"Processing, user logging in... Commander Samuel... Authorized...
Welcome to AIDa. How may I help you commander?” an enthusiastic robotic voice chimed from the system audio system.
"Coordinates, system status, and vitals check."
"Affirmative" AIDa responded.
The commander and captain Jesse had reached the main atrium. Captain Jesse sat on the nearest sofa and browsed on her ARMAS. A holographic schematics of the whole ship appeared.
"I’ll deal with the vital check and system status, sir. It will take me a few minutes to finish scanning, commander. I suggest you take a look at the specimens room." Captain Jesse responded while busy arranging and typing text into the ARMAS. She flicked the hologram into the nearby table and expanded it. She began working there instead. The commander glanced at her before proceeding into the specimens room.
"Call Captain Connor into the main atrium after finishing the checks. We’ll have a meeting on our next course of action.”
"Roger, sir.” Jesse stated without looking.
Commander Samuel proceeded into the experiments room located on the lower deck. He took the express elevator instead of the stairs at the far end of the main atrium. Elevator doors opened and went inside the metal box. he picked the lower deck button and waited for the elevator to reach its destination. He fiddled with his ARMAS while waiting for the elevator to reach the lower deck. He admired the compact yet sleek design of the ARMAS. He clicked into the customization options and clicked the color palette button. He was bored with the army green, washed green, and grey color scheme. It took a while for him to decide on which color to choose from. Ultimately, he picked a fuchsia interface and streaks and a lime&tangerine base color for the tech. Internally smirking as he was satisfied with the new color scheme.
The elevator dinged as he looked towards the elevator doors. Soon after, it opened with a robotic chime stating the floor he was in. He walked past the elevator doors and proceeded to the experiments room. The room is sealed off with a thick metal entrance door with cameras on both sides. Located on the leftmost beside the door, a security access code can be seen. He inputted the necessary code and the security doors began to open.
<Access granted. Authorized personnel: Commander Samuel, you are now entering EXPERIMENTS & Bio-STORAGE Chamber>
Commander Samuel walked towards the experiments room as a bluish neon hue flashed on his face. Seven small cryogenic chambers were presented in front of him, with Five medium bio-chambers two meters behind it and Two Large Stasis Pods at the far end of the room.
Respective transcripts popped as they detected a presence near them. All seven of the cryogenic chambers were devoid, displaying a large holographic text ”Empty" circulating the glassy exterior. The commander walked past these chambers and proceeded to the Medium bio-chambers. Four of them are slightly dim, displaying four peculiar lifeforms.
The first chamber glowed as he drew closer proximity, which displayed a juvenile male scarlet maned tiger from the planet Pulang Lalim, resembling ancient earth sabertooths. The commander checked the first chamber. Its vitals were displayed on the panel, after verifying, he swiped left, revealing its brief description.
’Name: Panthera tigris-smilidae; Juvenile Carnivore, (Savannah niche)
Size: Height=2.5 m (shoulder), 3 m (head-tail); Weight=n/a
Brief Description: This predatory creature is quite similar to ancient sabertooths from Earth. In terms of behavior, development, and reproduction, it’s similar to that of modern Panthera species. Usually, living near savanna and mountainous regions of the planet, these species have evolved adaptations fir for their environment. According to data transcripts from previous excursions to planet Pulang Lalim, native flora and fauna contain darkened reddish-scarlet to obsidian black pigmentation due to low Electromagnetic radiation emitted by the Binary stars (Red visible light-Infrared radiation). However, its uniqueness comes from its ever-brilliant mane. It possesses an aspect analogous to a faraday cage. Each strand of mane contains nerve endings lined with electro receptors adept at negating and controlling various electromagnetic fields. Furthermore, these native species are capable of metachrosis, or color changing. This behavior is quite similar to that of Chromatophores, the modern cephalopods have. Both unique abilities were probably developed due to the planet’s fluctuating magnetic fields induced by the systems’ M-type star sequence. Which are binary ‘twin’ red dwarves.′
The Commander inspected the hibernating alien fauna with pure fascination. The scarlet fur was glistening and fangs protruding from its jaw, flawlessly smooth and sharp. ”This is one healthy boy, that’s for sure..." the commander commented while rubbing his stubble. ”Don’t worry little guy, you’ll have a new home soon...” heaved and downcast. He closed the panel, and the interior glow from the first cylinder dimmed. He walked over to the second one.
The second cylinder glowed and displayed a similar fauna from the planet Pulang Lalim. Rather than a carnivore, he was presented with a red-orange elk. Commander Samuel drew closer and inspected its vitals first. After being content with the results and diagnosis, he turned into the humungous creature, barely fitting the medium bio-chambers.
"We should’ve transferred you into one of the Large Stasi-Pods at the back, but Captain Connor insisted you to fit in here are being tranquilized with anesthetics. Sigh, well... I have to agree with him here. The Stasi-Pod is too large for your size, and the liquid used to maintain the pod is hella expensive..." the commander stated. He pressed into the panel displaying its brief description. Surprised to see a long narrative regarding the alien fauna, so began reading the transcript.
’Name: Cervus canadensi-vivificansi; Adolescent Herbivore
Size: Height=3 m (shoulder), 3.4 m (head-tail); Weight: 300kg
[Incomplete] Description: A territorial herbivore from Planet Pulang Lalim. Congenial to modern-day elk species from Earth and now extinct deer species from the Pre-Dzin era of the race Serinae. This native ecological megafauna is the predominant herbivore species if the temperate regions of the planet. Fur and Antler growth grows about 0.5 cm and 1 inch a day respectively. Similar reproductive, development, and behavior were observed. Mostly grazing through scarlet grass in herds of 12-20. Juvenile Elk species start to grow antlers regardless of gender, however, do note that female antlers are smaller than male variations. A unique characteristic of this native species is its ability to siphon collect infrared rays from its antlers and store them within its thick antlers. When adults feel the presence of a nearby predator, they go into defensive mode, wherein all the stored infrared and radiation red light can be able to emit a blinding flash of 10 million candelas of red light stunning and temporarily disorienting predators, and giving the herd time to escape. Additionally, the light burst of these antlers produces a small radius of heat. Repeated use of stored light energy takes a toll on their structural integrity, thus wearing the antler off per burst. These antlers can store copious amounts of red light energy but take about 1-week to recharge. These antlers, when broken off, the nutrient-rich antlers can help dead spots within the forest regenerate rapidly. Sentient intelligent species use these antlers as means of storage for light energy, as well as serve as a delectable ingredient in various alien cuisines... [in progress-incomplete]
He was taken aback by the sheer amount of information displayed on the panel, enough to give Commander Samuel a blaring headache. ”Dammit Connor, leave the exposition to the archiving, geez..." as he motioned his fingers into a circular pattern on his temple.
"Detecting minor tension headache. Cause: Reading Captain Connor’s narrative. Commander, would you like me to administer Analgesics? (Painkillers). ” ARMAS chimed detecting the anomaly.
"No...no need, I just *sigh*, I just need to process THAT." Commander Samuel pointed to the panel like some vassal of horror...information horror...
He sat on the chamber floor as he continued to inspect the hibernating creature. The sheer size of the Scarlet Elk amazed him. “I’ve seen a few elks at the Terrarium, but never this big. I wonder what Scarlet elk antler food tastes like?” He switched thoughts while fiddling with ARMAS.
"ARMAS, store-data-catalogue_Scarlet Elk_ into-personal-archive."
"Affirmative, storing... storing.... successful archive"
He quickly glanced at the other two alien flora from the remaining two chambers before proceeding to inspect the third chamber. Before he could press the panel, he was abruptly interrupted by the ship’s communication system.
"Commander, we are nearing our destination.” a feminine voice spoke from the speaker system. Checking up on his ARMAS, the commander nodded as the ship was indeed nearing its destination. He closed all panels and dimmed the lights of the experiments room. He was about to exit the experimental room when he saw his initial objective... his notebook.
He grabbed it and placed it into ARMAS’ inventory. He walked out of the room and into the elevator. A few minutes later, he reached the main atrium where Captain Conner and Jesse sat opposite each other in the lounging area.
"I reckon you didn’t finish checking the vitals." Captain Jesse chuckled while reading an e-novel from ARMAS. She busied herself by comfortably sitting on the couch, slouched while reading the novel. With a mug of coffee placed on top of the glassy levitating table, along with three opened various chips. The commander wasn’t fond of her behavior, however, he has grown accustomed to her ‘Casual lifestyle’, as stated herself.
"I certainly doubt he did finish checking those. Probably still garbling over my descriptions ." as Captain Connor, planted a smirk on his lips while busy fumbling transcripts. On the other hand, Captain Connor on the other side is busy arranging some documents on the levitating table. Unaware, he is still wearing his clothes from the day before. Dragging and whizzing around trying to arrange them into categories, then cataloging them into the Laniakea Confederation server.
Both are messy, but the commander has to deal with them both.
"You know, both of you won’t get married at this point and I’m kind of worried about it." Commander Samuel crossed his arms like a disappointed parent. ”Who needs to get married if I have machines and novels to keep me company?" Captain Jesse repositioned herself on the couch while reaching for the mug of coffee on the table. ”Agreed, marriages are unnecessary. they bring misery to both partners in the long run. And don’t get me started with the concept of ‘love’. It’s stupid." Captain Connor blurted out with disdain, wrapping up the documents before proceeding to the auxiliary room. ”I’ll have some cheese sandwich before showering." he walked towards the doors, disappearing.
"Sigh... anyways directive?” Commander stated as he looked towards Captain Jesse. She then swiped her ARMAS, closing the tab of her novel, showing the trajectory of the ship. She gracefully swiped it towards the table where a larger image of the coordinates and trajectory of the ship was illustrated.
Commander went closer and took a closer look at the table. Captain Jesse stood upright, finishing off her coffee before munching a bag of potato chips.
"We are close to the outpost. Prepare docking phase, Capt. Jesse." he commanded as the commander went into the main control deck. He deactivated auto-pilot mode and went into manual mode.
"Let the docking phase commence. Capt. Jesse readjusts the auxiliary thrusters and security clamp while I handle the maneuvering of the ship."
"Affirmative Cmdr." Capt. Jesse said.
After a few seconds of maneuvering, both successfully docked and secured the ship from the dilapidated outpost. “I mean... commander is it safe to dock? The structure is in shambles. Can the outpost handle the frigate?” Capt. Jesse stated with uncertainty.
"Yeah, it’s fine. I ordered AIDa auto-scan a few moments back. Before I went down into the experiments chamber. And, where the heck is Capt. Connor?"
"Hmm, probably showering. Give it a minute or two commander.” Capt. Jesse snorted as she finished readjusting the thrusters and walked up to him with her hands on her hip. She walked towards the main control deck and peeked through the enormous glass, and through the dilapidated outpost. The circular structure of the outpost is indeed spectacular to see if it weren’t severely damaged. The glowing red lights flashing on and off the spire caught her eye for a moment before focusing on the deteriorating anchor foundations embedded into the asteroid.”Unsafe..." she mumbled.
"Structurally speaking the anchor foundations to the asteroid are unstable, and the main structure is severely damaged. It’s a miracle to see the main spire still standing but my point is, the structural integrity would definitely fail." Capt. Jesse reminded the commander as she walked up to him. She continued to explain the risks and possible projections if they proceeded to venture further.
"Yes, yes... I know what happens. We’ll only get the coordinates from the primary communications deck, and probably get some supplies along the way." Cmdr. Samuel reminded her, whilst giving a reassuring pat on the back. Moments later, Capt. Connor emerged from the right-wing, fully dressed to venture outside. ”Coming Cmdr.?" asked Capt. Connor whilst finishing zipping up his recon suit.
"Come on Cmdr. The sooner we get out of this place the better." groaned Connor as he recalibrated ARMAS from passive to recon_defensive.
"How did you know I was gonna call you to venture out?“Cmdr. asked. Capt. Connor responded ”Of course I knew, Jesse’s gonna stay behind, manning the ship in case of emergency. I suited up when the huge thud was heard after docking."
"Alright, give me a minute to suit up."
Momentarily, both are suited up and ready to venture out. Capt. Jesse positioned herself at the main control deck and manned the ship towards the opening. She signaled the transmitters to open sector 18. Which, opened upon command. The outpost catered to small, medium, and large ship docking bays, and since their’s are classified as ‘small’, they entered the docking bay. Both walked toward near the entrance and pressed a button revealing an array of weaponry at their disposal. They both took plasma pistols and an electron shotgun. They positioned themselves in the entrance way, as Capt. Jesse into the docking bay and waited for decompression. Signaling Capt. Jesse that they’re ready, she opened the vaulted doors of the frigate and saw the two walk towards the central bay area of the derelict outpost.
She looked at them with a hint of anxiousness and concern but later dismissed it since they are seasoned soldiers.
"Bah, they’ll do fine...hopefully"
