Prologue
He had escaped easily enough. All it took was small scrapes and bruises as the van he was trapped in skidded on its side. Glass shattered, metal groaned and sparked and the world seemed to spin harshly, but he knew how to brace himself. He crawled out of the car once everything had stilled and ignored the police in the front seats. He couldn't be contained, he had been created to protect Kevin and that is exactly what he meant to do. He had to purge the world of the impurities that stained the world. They had no clue what it was like to suffer, what it was like to see the truths of the world. They had never experienced cruelty, they only spread it.
He could hear the hushed voices of the others echoing in his mind, criticizing but praising. They had witnessed his strength, his prowess, and had witnessed the wonder that he was.
"But what about her? What about Emma?" Luke asked.
"What about her?" Jade grunted stiffly, scratching at the bend of her arm.
"Well, are we just going to abandon her?" The Beast listened quietly, his attention splitting between running away and eavesdropping. He could see her fragile form in his thoughts, her wildfire hair blowing in the breeze. Inside him, he could feel Dennis' sadness clawing at him.
"Of course, we aren't going to forget about her. She's ours." Dennis spat ruefully. The Beast was almost proud of his fellow alters ferocity, but he'd have to warn him in the future to save it. His priority was to find a safe place for them. They needed shelter before a plan could even begin to flourish.
"Dennis, no offense, but you only just met this chick two days ago. You didn't even meet her, you kidnapped her." Jade said pointedly. Dennis' jaw tightened, fists clenched.
"Her capture was never part of the plan, Jade. She isn't like the others. She's pure. Like us." Dennis attempted. Barry shook his head and rubbed his temple.
"Enough of the bullshit, Dennis. This pure and impure thing you guys are doing is just stupid, just call her what she is. Broken. Being broken sucks, but that doesn't make her a perfect fit for us. She's eighteen for fuck's sake!" Barry attempted to reason with Dennis. Dennis shook his head and growled in frustration.
"Look, guys, I know I have fucked up in the past. I am not claiming to be innocent, but even you can't deny the pull we all feel whenever we are around her. She came to us. She keeps coming back to us. She is ours."
"Nuh-uh! I am NOT into chicks." Jade exclaimed. Dennis rolled his eyes at her.
The Beast was having a tough time ignoring their bickering. It was quite stifling having 24 personalities trapped into one body. The Beast ducked into an alleyway, taking cover behind a dumpster. There were so many scents, too many scents to be able to smell danger. How could they live in such a cursed city amongst all of the impure people?
The air around him was thickening, it was almost impossible to breathe. What was this? He frantically looked around him, searching for any type of exit. On the other end of the alleyway, he could see a building with windows boarded up. It wasn't necessarily as good as their dwelling back at the zoo but it could work. He had managed to take his fill and cleansed two lost souls. That took more out of him than he had cared to admit. They needed rest. That building would have to do.
He stood up on shaky legs, his muscles were spent from all of the sprinting. The bullets the humans shot at him, though they didn't break too many layers of his flesh, still penetrated enough to hurt. He dragged his hand across the wall for stability, willing his legs to carry him further. It wouldn't be much longer until he was safe. The broken glass cracked under his bare feet, still not breaking through his skin.
His fellow alters had finally calmed down though he could still feel Dennis pacing anxiously. Who knew that a girl could cause so much trouble? He wasn't expecting a mate this soon in their journey, it was proving to be a cog in their victory. Still, what would be done about her? Though she did indeed belong to them, she still had much growing up to do. She could strengthen if she was to aid them towards the Light. In turn, Dennis had a lot to learn as well. Survival was always their strong suit, but stealth was a weakness. As was self-control. Surely their mate would not be pleased if Dennis went off to chase his vices.
The Beast grimaced as he pulled a rusted, heavy door open and shut behind him. Finally, in the messy quiet of the warehouse, he could find solace and rest. There was a table centered in the room and with little hesitation, he jumped on its surface and settled down. The tracing of her fingertips against his skin still lingered like a soft lullaby. He admired how she caressed Dennis in his time of need, affection pouring through in abundance through her gaze.
Perhaps they had found their true mate after all. It seemed almost unlikely, but he had to admit that there was a type of relief. It seemed almost like an ending to their suffering. The Beast grinned ear to ear, laying on his back with his arms and legs star-fished out on the table. Exhaustion was quickly overcoming him. His muscles were blacking out as sleep slowly conquered him.
"We will find you, Emma. Rejoice." He threw his promise into the air. Sleep finally coaxed him and he accepted it gratefully with a smile on his lips.
