Prologue
"In this universe, places were distinguished to have magic as their natural source by their name. Realms were those places who depend on their own sole magic source, while Worlds were those who did not have any magical source of a sort." Shay sighed like he had run out of breath from that statement alone before continuing. "In this dimension, the Earth that you know, we call this The Normal World. Why it's called that? Because everyone has no unique ability here. At least that's what the Primordial Gods wrote in their books."
I had only known this guy for a good week and here we were, out in a clearing of a National Park, waiting for- a scout- Should I be scared? Probably. Am I? No. Why? Because this guy just saved me from Area 51. I am not a normal person, I knew that when I accidentally caused a blackout in the whole city. I was trying to pull a prank on the school by messing the PA system but it went horribly wrong and right when the FBI was on my tail, Shay had arrived and helped me escape because my own parents wouldn't be convinced I was innocent.
To be fair, I really was guilty for the blackout, but I didn't mean it, and the stress they caused with the FBI only made it worse. I had no choice but to follow Shay. He was just like me. We crossed the country in less than 2 hours and before night time.
"Are we not uniques as you described with unique abilities?" I asked, putting my shoes back on after washing them in the river beside us. Despite Shay being fast, this does not mean he was careful, we were full of splattered mud and since I didn't exactly pack anything, I could only clean my shoes for now.
Shay cupped his hands around his eyes, as if looking through imaginary binoculars, "Yeah, but this is because of the adoptive system. The most unnatural and miraculous thing a unique individual can do is give birth to a baby and survive. With so many kids born without parents, we were sent to the Normal World because let's face it, they are suckers for kids they even have overpopulation, it's incredible."
The adoptive system... so we were both- or in this case- all uniques are orphans? I grew up with parents, but I knew from the start they weren't actually my real ones because I had been in and out of the adoption system until I was 8 years old. That kind of experience really forces you to understand things too early.
I stretched and looked at the direction he was looking with his binocular hands, "So we were brought here because no one can take care of the baby uniques... so then what?"
He groaned playfully, "Were you not at all listening on our way here?"
I rolled my eyes, "I'm sorry but your voice couldn't catch up with your speed. No, I couldn't hear anything."
He laughed and even though the sun had set a few minutes ago, his features were clearer in the faint light. I could understand why he said he could get almost any job he wanted with minimum wage without credentials.
"Scouts scour the Normal World every month to look for uniques who have come of age so they can be taken back to the Unique World. It's not safe if we are discovered first by Light Realm Spawns. Remember that incident last week with the wind Light Realm Spawn?"
I thought back about the week I had first met him, he had been fighting a tornado, it looked like a losing fight if I hadn't interfered.
"Yes," I replied. "You called him Aeolus."
He nodded and took his bag I dropped on the ground then slung it over his shoulder. "That was just one of the Light Realm Spawns. They are out to get new recruits in the Normal World, so if we don't get picked up soon by the Scouts. We're dead."
Just as he said that lightning crackled across the sky then followed a purple flash that slit the clouds open for a second before closing again.
Shay smiled cheekily, "Perfect Timing. Come on, Eda."
He didn't wait for a response and ran at a normal pace towards the flash of light. I guess this is where my journey starts.
