Chapter 1: The letter
I sat lonesome on a bench, awaiting my friend's arrival, but nothing had come of it. He seemed to be running quite late, which is unlike him. (Sighs heavily) I best leave before the sun lays itself to rest.
As Tobias makes his way back to his home, he hears footsteps dashing towards his now panicked self, with his heart falling to its knees, he spins around in anticipation, only to be greeted by a heavy breathing young lad, panting trying to catch his breath, attempting to speak.
"Sir, it's Master Herald, (pants heavily) he has summoned you to his chambers at once, you must hurry, the matter he claims dire." Alarmed by this, Tobias hurries over to Herald's quarters, expecting only the worst. The journey there was short, yet it felt as though hours had crept by without his knowledge. Finally at the foot of Herald's stairs leading to the upper level, he could sense the unnerving tension.
"Brother, I've come as a bearer of bad news…" a muffled voice says beyond the stairwell. Sudden silence broke when Tobias set foot on the first few steps, allowing the creaks to echo throughout the place. Every step announced his accession , thickening the tension. Eventually after a suspenseful journey up, Tobias arrived at Herald's chamber. Upon hearing the footsteps suddenly halt at the fore, Herald himself sternly exclaims:" Reveal yourself or draw your weapon and kill me!" he exclaims while his brother stands ready beside the door.
Tobias swings the door open, then is greeted by a knife to his throat, and a cold pistol resting gently at his temple. "Oh, it is you, dear friend, my apologies." Aaron says with slight relief as he removes his weapons. Tobias exhales heavily as if to let out a sigh, he then instinctively applies pressure to the slight slit. Herald approaches his brother, then gestures to a cabinet to the side of the room, then ushers his friend to the foot of his bed where he points to a seat, suggesting he sit. Aaron returns with aid to stop the blood, a band-aid if you will call it that. A good while has passed, but still the brothers seemed not to have finished their conversation.
They treat me as though I were some adornment, highly wanted by many yet few understand my value. Though they almost shortened the force of life with me, they still believe I their closest ally. How sad these brothers are! I am but a man. Pitiful creatures they are, but here I find faith to breathe easy.
"Bother, as fate has bestowed upon me, I bring news of our mothers untimely demise… (Aaron Sighs deeply, then turns away from Herald, staring aimlessly beyond the moon lit horizon)... Tomorrow if you will, we leave for Harida..." Herald, confused and evidently overturned by this news, stumbled back resting on his bed in dismay."... twas cancer." Aaron finished, turning back to face the two men behind him. Tobias offered his condolences, not fully comprehending the impact this death has had on his friends, nor how deep their sorrow ran, yet that did not stop him from showing what little compassion he might have had.
Eventually after coming to terms with everything, Herald stood, hastily making his way to his desk, to write something or so it appeared. A short while later, he turns to his friend, hands him what seems to be a scroll then says: "Give it to Ellana, she is in her chambers, I believe, that's the last word she had given of her whereabouts." Aaron then snickers :"Old fashioned you are brother, I assume her telly is dead then." They all share in a laugh, before Tobias leaves to hand over the scroll to Ellana.
A mere messenger I've become, to slaves of a hypocrisy. Here I ride in my untamed carriage, vehicle if you will, contemplating their presence in my life and how it came for me to be at the point at which I am, a messenger… I'm better than this! But for now we wait, so let these sleeping dogs lay.
The time is now twenty-one hundred hours and Tobias has just arrived at lady Ellana's quarters. It was an hour long journey.
While getting out of his vehicle, a grin befalls him upon seeing Ellana exit her quarters. An obvious sight of bliss could be seen on her face, seeing who she mistook for her lover, thinking he was finally here to meet the little one growing in her womb. An inapt discovery it was for her, her bliss vanished as if a ghost had haunted her dream. "I've no money to offer to The Raven, you've taken all I have, be gone now, my dignity be my own." Ellana grunts, clutching onto her blouse hiding her bodacious breast. Tobias says nothing, just hands her the scroll then turns to leave. She pauses for a brief moment, looks down at what was placed in her hand, sees a familiar initial, then yells after Tobias:"You don't deceive me, the scar on your face will haunt my dreams, as I remember our bliss less night, in your brother's chamber, Aaron!"
Will I be so generous, as to grace her with a voice no one has heard no more than twice? Maybe this once I'll entice my unforgiving nature and smite her with words? Alas, I will not. What an unscrupulous woman, driven by her pitiful lust for some vast fortune, I assume her desire for both brothers drives her more in learning about their recent inheritance. Ellana must hate herself due to her unwillingness to obey the will of an elderly woman that called her daughter. Now that woman lies cold and displeased in Harida . What a wasted life.
Ellana runs up to Tobias, removing the hood that hid his face from any light. Bewildered, she stumbled back, tripping over herself, upon seeing Tobias before her, she fearfully exclaimed:" My lord, I did not know it was you. Raven, please forgive my ignorance. Spare me your wrath. (on her knees pleading)" A displeased expression highlighted in the moonlight, with no words said, just an angry gesture to leave his sight. He covers his luscious golden locks with his hoodie, keeps the silence, then leaves. Now in his car, Tobias journeys back, simply finding peace in what he deems an irrelevant world. Lost in his thoughts, accustomed in silence, too distracted by his ideas he exceeds the turn leading him home.
Once more, I see it unfit to live a life stuck in a gear rusted by time. I've lost my way, straying from the Shepherd, leaving the light within to fade. What do I say?! Nonsense I must add. Utter mumbled ridiculousness, conjured up by a lonesome mind due to an unwillingness that is my speech… So here I am, lost again.
The surrounding darkness hid the moonlight, allowing only his vehicle lights to guide his way through hundreds of thick acres of wood before him. But even so, it was a grave task, for his patience ran low, and time was of the essence. The hour was now twenty-three hundred hours, and only recently he discovered his mistake, which infuriated him slightly. He then sighed deeply, turned his vehicle and made his way home on the shortest path he could think of at the time. After another hour passed, he saw the familiarity of his home before him, he sighs with a sense of subtle relief, knowing he had made it in time to rest after this unfortunate day.
