Chapter 1
“Welcome to the deadliest school in the world!”
“IS that really the best selling point for the only wizarding school.” I muttered, watching the magicial recording play through the orientation spell. “Hopefully the faculty has a mess hall, in that case.”
“Here at Thalatte, you’d expect a full fledged faculty, but with the special skills of Rhusk Angelblood, the entire school has been automated! No need for fac… Addendum: Welcome Ms Vaisey. It is a pleasure to have one of the top casters here to mentor these students. Do not worry. We have hired five specialists. Chryses Primrose, Yunaivis Yanice, Guava Feather, and Amon Wrought! Your job will be to assist these students in an initiative to hopefully increase the overall graduation rate. Recent spells have created all the proper staffing facilities. Thank you for teaching!”
“Right. Five faculty members.” I appeared in a, all things considered, rather lavish quarters. I set my two luggage bags onto the bed. Beyond the personal bathroom… the bed, desk, cabinets and hole into the abyss felt so familiar. I put my clothes and actual amenities into the cabinets. So, four other staff members. Chryses Primrose. I remember him from my first year. He’s the same age as me, same graduating class. I’d had to trade projects with him during my first year. I had a project for a spear, and he had one for a special version of Manuka Honey, which after I’d aced the project, I’d affectionately called Manaka Honey. Amon Wrought was likely to be the most accomplished of the bunch as an expert as an artificer. Sadly Yunaivis was unknown to me. Guava Feather on the other hand, was the one character I was the most familiar with. A member of the Midwest College. Same age as me and Chryses, same graduating class. Everyone had tried to get into a party with him to survive graduation. I’m pretty sure he’d found a spell that could convert entropy into mana… however that works. I sighed, walking around the perimeter of the room, investigating the wards. I had to upgrade them with my own wards. They were a lot better at holding out against demons… and only required a tiny bit of mana daily for me to keep them running. Now that I was decently protected, I needed to ensure my second bag was correctly working. I opened the case. A bag of dimensions. Typically dimensional travel is warded off, but after some fierce studying of the school’s wards I found a pocket dimension spell that wasn’t affected. This is typically due to the fact that most dimensional spells create pocket dimensions in the Abyss. Of course, it was in ancient Mesopotamian. Also of course, it was only a pocket dimension into the sand world. A creation by the Uruk Domain during the age of Gilgamesh, Enkidu and Hammurabi. It of course wasn’t hard for a wizard like myself to construct a nice little house, safe from demon-kin. A knock hit my door, which caused me to jump. I closed my bag, moving the straps through the little clips on the bag to turn it into a backpack. I opened the door. I was met by a jet=black haired, bronze-skinned woman. “I assume you are Yunaivis Yanice.”
“Hiya! Jacinth Vaisey, Right?”
“Jacki is fine.” I replied, stepping out into the hall with Ms Yanice. “I assume the others have come through?”
“I dunno, I’m just across the hall. I was trying to see for myself.” Yunaivis held out her hand. “School! I need a schedule!”
“Wh… Oh! Fascinating!” I yelped, watching a notebook fly into her hand. We both looked at it. “I forgot the school did that… I thought it was a library-only feature.”
“There isn’t a ceiling here… we’re on the library floor.” Ah, that made sense. The easiest way to create extra rooms. Add them into a space where you could use the least materials and mana to add the five rooms. “We have three hours till the first years come in!”
“Hm. That’s quite soon.”
“Do we do anything to facilitate new arrivvals?”
“There hasn’t ben a faculty to facilitate things here. Ever. We’re going to be making up most of this.” I looked over the schedule. “I’m gonna use a voice amp.”
“Okie.” Yunaivis replied, covering her ears.
“New staff! Staff meeting in an hour!” I called, I heard a few startled jumps. “Staff messing facility!”
“Perfect!” Yunaivis looked through the schedule. “What’s the meeting plan?”
“To make a plan?” I shrugged, then started walking to the staff lunch room. The door clicked unlocked and flew open. “I’m surprised this cafeteria isn’t inaccessible during non-serving times.”
“Apologies for my haste in taking point. But time is valuable to us right now. In two hours, the first years are to arrive. We haven’t even met.” I looked at the four others. “I’m Jaciinth Vaisey. I graduated four years ago. I’m pretty sure I’m the only one researching Mesopotamian Magics… and I study other older languages.”
“Amon Wrought. Master artificer. It’s been six years since I graduated.”
“Hey everyone! Yunaivis Yanice, Affinity of nature. I was here three years ago.”
“Chryses Primrose. Graduated four years ago. I research and hunt demons and monsters.”
“Guava Feather. Also graduated four years ago. Affinity is light magic, I also did the alchemy track, so I’m knowledgeable in that.”
“It’d seem we have one faculty per education path, plus a healer and security guard.”
“Combat magicians and demon research applies to demon studies. So Yuna is the only one without an apparent class-based job.”
“We got plenty of time to divide duties. We should do intorductions to the three years here right now!”
“I intend to investigate the school, figure out any poor designs, or flaws in the overall warding structure. I’ve never had the chance to do so.”
“I suppose I should ensure the maintenance logs are all up to standard.”
“I’ll go with Amon.”
“Thanks, Chryses.”
“I’ll go with Jacinth.”
“Yuna, where are you going?”
“I’m just gonna explore, perhaps meet some students.”
“Let’s meet in an hour and fifteen to greet our new students in the grand hall.”
“Okay!”
“And! Break!” Guava hummed.
