Afterglow

Between the pine trees and evergreens, the sun shines brightly. The iridescent light shimmering on my skin. Snow falls as I turn the pages of my book. I look up towards the sun, closing my eyes as I take a deep breath. My warm exhale leaves a small cloud of fog.

"I love this weather-" I say as I relax more into the old wooden bench.

"Thanks, I do, too" a low voice chimes in from above, between the trees.

I squint my eyes to hopefully see further, but to no avail. Snowflakes blow towards me as I wonder where the voice came from. Feeling a sudden presence behind me, I lean back more on the bench and sigh with a smirk on my lips.

"Jack you can't scare me. I can sense you a mile away, you know that."

He floats over the bench and sits down next to me, "Well, it was worth a shot" he chuckles.

I look at him, his deep baby blue eyes, studying his features that I already know like the back of my hand. Light freckles dust upon his cheeks, hardly noticeable unless you know they are there. His cheeks slightly turning pink as he turns away.

"Why do you always look at me like that, hun?" he says nervously.

"because you are the most beautiful human I've ever met." I smile softly.

He turns to look at me, studying my face as I did to him. I begin to blush as I can already tell what he's about to say.

"You're perfect to me," he cups my face with his cold hands and presses his lips to my cheek.

Jack and I start to talk about anything and everything, just as we always do, and as a couple hours pass, I grab my book and we make our way inside of our warm home.

Our dog jumps and paws at our legs, begging for our attention, while the cat watches from a distance with curiosity. The living room light flickers softly, as the smell of rose candles fills the air. The fireplace crackles and our comfort movie plays on the T.V. screen.

This is our home. Just a glimpse of our lives, our happiness.

Jack wraps his arms around me, our faces snuggling into each others shoulders. Rocking back and fourth, humming to ourselves, "you should see the way the light dances off your head," he starts to sing along with me, "oh, I will hold on to the afterglow."
