UNFULFILLED

I am someone who is unknown to you, someone who had dreams and aspirations just like you. I may seem ordinary but my story and life deviated from ordinary. My name is Han Ji Soo and I’m a 13 years old ordinary school student. My life was just the same every day until I turned 13.

The alarm had set off three times but a certain someone still did not wake up. A loud bang on the startled her. “Han Ji Soo, you better get up. Don’t make me come there”. “I’m up grandma, give me a minute”, she said in a drowsy voice. Ji Soo reluctantly got up from her bed and dragged herself to the washroom.

After her breakfast she realised that she only had fifteen minutes later. She scurried towards the school. Lucky for her that she lived near the school but as usual she was ten minutes late. “Ms. Han meet me in the staffroom”, the disciplinary in-charge said as soon as she was spotted. Ji Soo stopped in her tracks and thought that only God could save her now. The disciplinary in- charge called her grandmother who came without any delay and the first thing she did was smack her head. The disciplinary in-charge informed her that Ji Soo had a major behaviour problem so she had to get rusticated. Her grandmother though seemed fierce a moment ago started pleading on her behalf. At first the in-charge was not ready to listen to her but soon gave in to her. “Why is granny begging so much to this old man? They can do whatever they want for all I care”, is what she thought but her thoughts were shaken when her grandmother forcefully made her bow in respect. Though she was not rusticated, yet she was suspended from the school for a week. Her grandmother thanked the in-charge who felt bad for her for having such a granddaughter who made her bow in front of a stranger as her age.

Han Ji Soo was actually one of the naughtiest brat among her peers. She would get herself into trouble almost every day. Everyone had given up on her except for her grandmother. She also had her parents who lived abroad while she was being taken care of by her grandmother. Her grandfather was in the British Army and currently he was working in the Afghan Embassy. Though he looked well off, only his wife knew that he was suffering from the advanced stage of Cancer with no cure. Her mother also had a younger sibling who was studying abroad. It was not due to negligence but her age that had turned her into this. After coming back from the school she had an argument with her grandmother after which she refused to listen to her and shut herself inside her room. During dinner time her grandmother came to her room and coaxed her. This has become a very common routine. As soon as she finished her meal she came to her room and wanted to be alone but her grandmother came in and offered to sing a lullaby. Ji Soo loved her grandmother dearly but she was too adamant to show. She fell asleep and her grandma left her with a kiss on her forehead.

At around 1:36 A.M Ji Soo was woken up by a loud bang. It was so loud that it echoed throughout her house yet her grandmother who was a very light sleeper seemed unfazed. She sat on her bed for half an hour and decided to check for the source of the noise. Her house was a two storey mansion with only two occupants and the noise came from downstairs which would be vacant during the night hours as both of them would sleep in the first floor leaving the ground floor empty. She thought of waking her grandmother but she knew better than anyone how tiring the day had been. She had mixed feelings about it. Her curious self wanted to explore but the other half didn’t dare. So, after thinking a lot she decided to wait for another hour. The night had never been so long was what she felt. After a couple of minutes she turned her cell phone to see the time. It was 3:45 A.M. She laid on the bed and tried to fall asleep but she only fell asleep after 5 in the morning. The next day she was woken up by the smell of delicious pancakes. As usual she got ready thinking how strange it was that her grandmother did not wake her up. She went downstairs and sat to eat when her grandmother reminded her that she was suspended. Both remained silent for a few seconds and Ji Soo was the first one to break the silence by asking her about the incident. Grandmother asked her to stop fooling around and to focus on improving her table manners. Ji Soo thought about it and as her grandmother had said she also felt that maybe her mind was playing a trick on her now that she had a lot of time.
