Chapter 1

Leaning my head against the wall. Exhaling the cigarette smoke. I hear my supervisor Antonne calling me. I take one last puff and flick the cigarette away.

I head inside to our breakroom. I find Antonne and he frowns, “I’m going to need you to leave the maintenance jobs you had today for tomorrow. Circuit breakers on floor 12 is faulty and needs our urgent attention.”

I nod, “no problem boss.”

He sighs, “from the complaints I’ve received. It’ll keep you busy for while. I’m just going to inform Samantha you’re on your way and that the electricity on the floor will be off.”

Giving him a thumbs up. I go retrieve a ladder, tool kit and my gear.

I wait for the elevator and once the door opens I head on inside. I press the number 12 button. The door closes and I look at the Cacciola Enterprises logo and roll my eyes.

Everything is so stiff and superficial in this building. Everyone has to be well-groomed and dressed appropriately.

I’m glad us maintenance crew have our own elevator we use as I seriously don’t want to be in a elevator with the stuckup office workers.

I look at my reflection in the elevator’s mirror and smile at my black and teal ombre box braids and the various piercing holes.

I’m not allowed to wear any piercings or jewellery on the job.

It’s for safety purposes and I have to be dressed appropriately.

I want to be different so I wear my hair in different colours. HR had complained but I showed them in the code of conduct that they referred to dying your hair and not fake hair.

I was told that the code of conduct would be revised so I shouldn’t get too comfortable.

Yeah whatever bitch!

The elevator stops and I make my way to the room where the circuit breakers are. I look around at the white and sterile walls and floors. The offices are borded with glass walls so a couple of workers see me.

One gets up from his seat and makes his way to the door.

He opens it and says, “could you please give me 10 minutes before you switch off the power.”

I sigh but nod my head, “starting now.” I reply.

He thanks me and closes the door and quickly makes his way to his computer.

Away from everyone I reach the room. I reach for the key and as soon I want to unlock the door. I hear a noise.

I listen carefully and I hear a passionate moan coming from a female.

I smile to myself and try not to laugh. I look around and decide to get myself some water.

I stand at the door again and from what I hear they’re far from done.

For a workplace that is hell bent on strict rules and regulations. You would think sex at the workplace would be non existent.

These office workers think they so slick. There have been many times when I have to work night shift and I would catch them being busy in the office.

I make sure that I’m not seen and once I am out of sight. I would make a noise to alert them that someone is on the way.

I push the ladder down so that it falls down on the floor.

“Oh Shit!” I say and pick up the ladder again. I shake my keys.

“Which key is it again?” I ask myself.

I hear the couple inside are shuffling and arguing. The door opens and a woman with long red hair comes out. She is extremely embarrassed.

I smile and wink at her. I put my finger against my lips in a shush gesture.

Next to come out of the room was a very attractive looking man.

Tall, olive skin toned, dark brown curly hair, honey brown eyes, a neatly trimmed beard. From how his black suit fit him he was muscled.

He’s not embarrassed.

I turn my attention back to the woman.

“Are y’all done? Cause I gotta work on the circuit breakers. So if y’all will excuse me.”

I reach for the ladder and head on inside the room.

I’m met with the smells of sex and I sigh heavily. I rub my hand on my face. There’s a time and place people. I’m gonna have to keep this door open.

I put on my safety glasses and gloves. I take out the circuit breaker analyzer and connect it to different circuit breakers.

Once I’m done analyzing the data. I start switching off everything. I reach for my screwdriver.

My radio goes off and it’s Antonne.

“Have you find out the problem yet?” He asks.

“Not yet. I had a code juiced.”

“Who left the damn door unlocked again? Don’t them office folks have work to do.”

I was about to answer him when I realised the man was still outside.

I frown at him, “I’m sorry can I help you.”

“You’re one of the electricians?” He asks in a deep voice.

I nod, “yes.”

I turn my attention back to my work but he speaks again.

“How long have you been working here?”

“Two years. You new here? Because I know everyone on the 12th floor and it’s my first time seeing you.”

He has an intrigued look on his face.

“Yes I am new here. Alessio is the name.” He extends his hand for me to shake it.

I was about to take my glove off when I realised what he was busy with earlier and decided to keep it on. I extend my hand and shook his.

Firm grip nice.

“Shani.”

He smiles and I swear I almost lost my breath.

“Nice to meet you Shani.”

I pull my hand away. I look at the circuit breakers that need fixing.

“I’m sorry I really need get this done. So...”

He puts his hands up, “I’m sorry I won’t keep you from your work anymore. Have a good day.”

I smile weakly, “thanks I will.”

It’s the end of my shift and I put on all my piercings as I leave for home.

My colleague Damien and I are on our way to the Subway when I see Alessio entering a resturant with another woman next to him.

I would’ve thought nothing of it until I saw his hand was on the curve of her lower back and ass.

“Damn ain’t he a womanizer.”

“Who?” I gesture to Alessio.

“Oh the bosses son. He’s got that reputation. But according to office gossip the women know of each other.” He explained.

I frown, “what do you mean bosses son?”

Damien side eyes me, “that’s Allessio Cacciola. Heir to the Cacciola fortune.”
