Life Changes

Evelyn

What am I going to do? I’m homeless. I must find somewhere to sleep for the night before the cold takes my life away. I lost my job, and now I’m forced to leave the only home I have ever known. I walked into the city, and there was no one in sight. I pulled out my phone and started to look at my contacts. Should I call Dylan? No, we separated on bad terms, and he’s abusive, possessive, and aggressive. I would rather sleep on the streets than sleep under his roof. I walked and found myself in the park, which was well-lit. Sleeping on a bench will have to do for now.

I found three figures running towards me. One guy slammed the other against a tree and shot him in the head. “That’s for Damian,”

Oh god, he shot him.

“We got him, Gregory,” said the man.

“That we did, Parker. The boss will be happy,” Gregory said, laughing.

“They killed him!” I said as I began to hyperventilate.

“Hey, you!” the person named Parker pointed at me. “Get her!”

“Oh, shit!” I ran away from them out of the park and into the streets. I ran until I was out of breath at a bus stop. I looked around and didn’t see them. Thank god, I think I lost them. I took time to process what I saw a few moments ago: a man was murdered.

“Well, what do we have here?” I turned around and saw Parker in front of me. I quickly turned around to run, but Gregory was blocking me. Oh god.

“Don’t even think about running,” Gregory growled.

I closed my eyes. “Go on, just make it quick, please.” I was shaking. “I know I’m not getting out of this.”

“Kill you? Why would we harm a beautiful woman? The boss will eat you up. You’re coming with us. Parker, take care of the body back at the park and catch us up.”

After Parker took care of the body, he met with us at what seemed to be their hideout. “Greg, hold her here. I’ll go and talk to the boss and see what he wants us to do with her,” Parker said as he left.

“Please, let me go if you’re not going to kill me. I won’t tell anyone about this.”

“Pipe down; you’re not going anywhere,” Gregory said.

“Let’s go; the boss wants to see her,” Parker said as they began to walk me through the door. “Start walking!” We entered what looked like a makeshift bar with a man sitting by it drinking. “Boss,”

The man got up from the seat and walked towards me. That man is Damian Halliwell, Lord of the Black Dragons, the most feared mafia in New York City. His eyes bored into mine. I have never seen such cold, dark eyes in my life. I break eye contact and stare at the floor, my heart beating. He took a step towards me and took a step back.

“Who are you?” Damian spoke.

I couldn’t get a word out. I stood silent and looked at the floor. I felt something poking me in the back; I realized it was a gun. “Answer the boss!”

“Nobody important,” I said.

“What’s your name?” Damian said.

“What’s it to you?” I said as I heard everyone gasp, and it occurred to me that nobody answered the boss. I listened to a girl in the back shouting, ‘Kill her,’ but Damian’s face never changed; he showed no emotion. Who the hell is he?

“I’m trying to decide whether to kill you or have some fun with you,” Damian said.

I drew back and slapped him before I realized what I was doing. Everyone looks pissed, and I try to remain in control.

“Everyone, shut up. Feisty little thing, aren’t you?” Damian asked.

“I’m not afraid of you.”

“Well, little kitty, you should be. Greg, take her back to my place. I’ll deal with her later and grab her phone. I’ll deal with that personally.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Wait, what? No, please. I’m sorry,” I said as I tried to grab his arm, but he turned and walked away.

“Let’s go,” Greg said. He placed me in a car that might belong to Damian and took me to a penthouse. “Get out of the car; the boss wants me to show you to your room,” Greg said.

“My room?” I said.

“Start walking!” Greg said as he guided me to the room I was meant to stay in. “This is your room for now. So, what’s your name?”

“None of your fucking business,” I said.

“Very mature,” Greg smirked.

“Fuck you, asshole!” I growled.

“If you cooperated, you would make things much easier for yourself. The boss won’t hesitate to kill you if he has to.

I breathed deeply. “My name is Evelyn Jones,”

“That wasn’t so hard now, was it? Now settle in; the bathroom is over there, and don’t try to escape. I’ll be outside; there’s no way out of this penthouse without a key card.” Gregory said.

I don’t think I could escape even if I could, but this place beats sleeping on a park bench. I accepted my fate when cornered at the bus stop, but they didn’t kill me. Why? I hope they don’t kill me. I should shower and get some sleep.

Tomorrow is a new day, and I hope it’s good. The shower felt amazing, but I was crying the whole time. God, I’m pathetic. I’m unsure whose shirt this is, but I hope they are okay with it.

Damian

I returned home and placed my jacket in the closet. Gregory was standing in the living room, looking at the door to see if that girl wanted to go out. “Greg, did you get her name?”

“Her name is Evelyn Jones,” Gregory said.

“Evelyn Jones? Did you do any digging into her background?” I asked.

“She’s 22 and was living on the east side in a trailer park. She has no family; her parents were murdered in front of her when she was 17. No one knows why the killer let her live, and that will be a mystery we’ll never solve as the police found the killer, but we’re forced to kill him in a shootout.”

“Where does she live now?” I said, pouring a glass of scotch.

“She was evicted from the trailer part earlier today; she lost her job and hadn’t paid the rent,” Grey said.

“So she’s homeless?” I said.

“Not sure. I did find that there was an ex-boyfriend called Dylan Harmon. They ended up on bad terms, and I asked the landlord at the trailer park about him; it turns out that he’s abusive, hangs around, and she keeps taking him back.” Gregory said.

“Did you find anything out about this, Dylan Harmon?” I took a sip of my scotch

“Dylan is a small-time criminal, a bully boy, from what I heard,” Gregory said.

“Find out everything you can about Dylan and Evelyn. Where is she now?” I said.

“Evelyn is sleeping, boss,” Greg said.

“Okay, you can go; I’ll see you tomorrow.” Greg nodded and walked out the door. Homeless, huh? I entered the guest bedroom and saw Evelyn sleeping peacefully. She’s wearing my favorite shirt to bed. I looked at her legs, and damn, they looked smooth.

“Get your mind out of the gutter, Damian; it’s never going to happen. I should go and check, and Avery.”

I went further into the penthouse and knocked on Avery’s door. “Avery, are you here?” I opened the door, but he wasn’t in his room. Where the hell is he? Jesus Christ, this room is a fucking mess. I pulled out my phone and called, but it went straight to voicemail. “AVERY! Where the fuck are you? Get home now. You know not to go out alone in the city at night. Do not make me go out to look for you ’cause you will not like it when I find you.” I closed my phone and sighed.

That boy is getting on my last damn nerve.
