Chapter 1

~Jubilee Winter~

My arctic blue eyes averted from the electronic notebook to gaze out the window of the robotics classroom, only to get bewitched by the first snowflakes falling from the white sky. Some of the snowflakes fell on the windowsill outside, only to melt. Tilting my head to the side, I wondered how sometimes humans in this era of advanced technology were similar to these particles formed into ice crystals. Shaking my head, I put the long waves of champagne blonde hair behind my ear and focused on the task at hand — studying.

It was after the mandatory college hours, and most of the students were out of the primary building of the university. Only I and a few students who studied mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, and computer science appeared to be present — trying to make a name for themselves in this universe. That included me as well. The rest of the students in the classroom were relatively quiet, save for some small chit-chat about Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica, but 90% of the time, everyone had their noses stuck in their studies. It was the perfect environment, with most of them being either Beta or Omega and, lastly, me — a Sigma.

Sigmas were rare, and some other designations would mistake us for Alpha until they would get a whiff of our scent. That’s when I would get flabbergasted looks from them. Unlike Alphas, Sigmas are much quieter and don’t seek the attention and validation of the other designation. People would label us lone wolves, but that’s because we don’t need a hierarchy to lead us. We are perfectly capable of taking care of ourselves, and companionship feels more like a stick in our gears; it slows us down. Now, that doesn’t mean we lack empathy. We are naturally selective with whom we open up because we don’t just welcome everyone in our private circle. If you like, you may label us dominating introverts. We do not derive our authority from a social hierarchy. It willingly originates from inside ourselves.

Speaking of Alpha, my ears perked up as I heard a chorus of male voices outside, in the hallway, and they got louder as they approached the robotics classroom. The scent of heavy male musk filled my nose, and I didn’t even have to guess who could be the cause of this disturbance. I could sense the others in the classroom getting anxious by these voices, and they all got startled when the door burst open, only for the captain of the college hockey team to fill the entire doorway — Hunter Avalanche. His teammates, or as I liked to call them, a pack of lap dogs, were behind him.

Looking up over the rim of my reading glasses, I discreetly looked at the golden-haired star of the campus. There wasn’t a single person at this university who didn’t know who Hunter Avalanche was. He was the captain of the hockey team and a famous Alpha, especially among Omegas. Everyone looked up to him as if he was a God, but deep down, I knew who Hunter was. His family was filthy rich, and evidently, his father got him into the best college this country could offer. It was the family’s reputation at stake, after all; the typical rich and spoiled male Alpha who thought this campus belonged to him.

I observed how he stalked inside the classroom with his lap dogs behind him. They headed to one of the tables where three Beta were working on a science project for tomorrow — a piece of information I got from overhearing their conversation briefly after the hockey meatballs disturbed our peach.

“Hey, Beta buddy,” Hunter spoke in a friendly tone, but I could detect how sickly sweet it was. I watched how the massive blonde male sat down in the empty seat next to the Beta guy, who had anxiety drawn all over his face.

“You haven’t answered my messages about the homework, and I’m starting to lose my patience.” Hunter trailed off, tapping his combat boots on the linoleum floor of the classroom, making all the others tense.

“H-Hunter. Look, I cannot do your projects and homework anymore. The teachers are getting suspicious, and I could get expelled.” The Beta guy tried to resonate with the captain, who rolled his eyes and ran his fingers through his spikey blonde hair. A dry chuckle left Hunter, and the rosy air around him shifted to something darker. The other Beta and Omegas looked down in submission as the hockey king emanated dominance.

“Now, now. Let’s not get so hasty. It would be a shame if you make a certain Alpha mad and said Alpha would lose it, and let’s say — break something.” After Hunter said that, he suddenly stood up from his seat and grasped the Betas science project.

The tension in the classroom grew as the Betas stood up, trying to reach for their projects, but it was fruitless. Hunter stood at 6′3, and the tallest Beta was only 6′0, plus their body build wouldn’t compare to the bulky hockey player who looked like a mountain. The chorus of taunting from the hockey players and begging from the Betas filled my ears, and by this point, I knew that retaking the concentration on studying would be fruitless. Normally, I wouldn’t engage in other conflicts and brawls, but my Sigma part could never stand to see something unrightfully taking place, like the abuse of Alpha power for selfish gainings.

Sighing, I pulled my reading glasses off before rubbing the bridge of my nose. My icy-blue eyes focused on Hunter, who continued to threaten the Betas. “Hey, Avalance. Will you quit this ridiculous taunting? We’re in our last year of college, not high school.” I spoke calmly yet sharply, not even once letting a syllable shutter out. The sound of my voice made everyone stop what they were doing. I could feel all eyes on me, but I focused mine on the culprit who disturbed the peace. Stark blue eyes like a summer sky without a single cloud locked on me. For a second, an expression of confusion plastered over Hunter’s face, probably because someone dared to interrupt him. When he realized who dared to disturb him, his surprise turned to bitter amusement.

“Winter,” He hissed my surname under his breath, and I saw how his Adam’s apple bobbed up and down as he swallowed thickly.

It wasn’t the first time the mighty captain of the hockey team and I had an intense encounter. Since we both stepped into this university the first year, it was like a constant brawl of remarks — insults full of vitriol between an Alpha and a Sigma. My classification was unusual on campus, and given my interests in science and math, as well as Hunter’s tendency to bother the hardworking nerds in these fields, I and the golden head of ice would cross paths more frequently than was socially acceptable. Sigma’s and Alpha’s always had a thick tension between them; one was at the top of the hierarchy, and the other could care less about the food chain.

Everyone on the campus, even teachers, knew the moment Hunter and I would be in the same room, it would stir the fight for dominance. I wasn’t attempting to dominate the knucklehead puck, but when he tried to push his designation on everyone as if he were the top predator, that’s when I’d counter-attack. He was the sports star, notably in hockey, and his crafty and cunning Alpha nature made him someone to be wary of. Meanwhile, I was the top scientific and math student, with perfect grades and the possibility of working in large robotic firms after graduation. We were both dominant in our respective areas.

Hunter set the project down on the beige desk, and his attention focused on me. He crossed his arms over his chest, trying to look intimidating as he flashed his trademark crooked smirk.

“Don’t you have something better to do than to babysit these Beta nerds?” He inquired, sarcasm dripping down his tongue like venom, but I only clicked my tongue, not impressed with his attitude.

“Don’t you have to study for the final exams this year, considering is the last one, and then you will have to enter the real world, outside this campus you call kingdom?” The inquiry I hurled back at him lowered his arrogant demeanor, and his smirk pulled into a tight line, no longer looking amused. It appears like I struck a sensitive nerve there.

“Hey, listen here, blondie!” One of Hunter’s lap dogs stepped forward, but it surprised me when the captain motioned him to stay back.

“Why don’t you guys head back to our house? You all need rest after that brutish workout.” My overly analytical eyes squinted, and while the blonde Alpha told his team to leave, I motioned to the Betas and a few Omegas around to take off too, which they quickly did. Before I knew it, I was alone in the classroom with Hunter. His expression turned darker, and a menacing scowl crossed his sharp features.

His hair was perfectly put together in a rowdy quiff hairstyle, and his sapphire blue eyes glowed from the delightful contrast of his light beige skin color. His 6′3 height plus his bulging musculature added to the social standards of male beauty if only his personality would match these physical standards. Hunter had his trademark black, white, and red hockey jersey with the Red Vipers, the university hockey team, on along with black jeans and leather-black winter combat boots.

“Why do you have to be such a pain in the ass all the time?” Hunter’s acidic voice pulled my attention to him, and I stood up from my seat, crossing my arms over my chest, mimicking his posture.

“Excuse me?” I raised an eyebrow, not showing any emotion, knowing that’s what the Alpha looked for. His Alpha tactics would work on me because I was not an Omega. I was no Beta either, so he couldn’t intimidate me with just some growls and an uncivilized attitude.

“You always have to get your nose into my business! I was so close to making that Beta do my project, and you had to be the fucking hero.” He snarled, slamming his fist on the desk next to him. I didn’t even flinch at his primitive attitude and merely sighed. Here goes a nice relaxing evening for studying.

“Why not do the project and study yourself?” I asked, maintaining a monotonous tone that only seemed to add gasoline to the Alphas fire. “It’s the last year of college, and everything around us will vanish.”

Hunter squinted his eyes and took a step toward me, looking skeptical. “What’s your point?” I mentally rolled my eyes at how clueless he could be.

“My point is, Avalanche, that when we finish college, we will enter the real life of being an adult, and how you’ve spent your time in college will be the ultimate factor in how your life outside college will be like. All these years in college, you made others do your academic work, but the time to show what you have learned will soon come, and I doubt anyone truly successful is curious to know about the drunken fraternity parties.”

The Alpha’s hands formed into fists, and his jaw stiffened at each cold bucket of reality I poured over his head. The blue of his eyes turned darker, and I scoffed when he cracked his neck, trying to eliminate some of the tension in his body.

“And what about you, Winter, huh?” He snarked, taking another step toward me, closing the space between us. Only a few inches separated us, and I had to crane my neck to maintain eye contact with the knucklehead.
