Chapter 1

Groggy, Eve rolled over and hit the "Dismiss" button on her phone. She sat up, her comforter bunching up at her waist. Looking out the window she saw the sun wasn't even up yet. She laid back down, not ready to move just yet, turning over she grabbed her phone. She checked her notifications, then scrolled aimlessly on social media until her second alarm went off. Knowing now she actually has to get up she sighed and forced her self to push the covers off. She then slipped her feet into her shoes, and pulled on a sweater over her tank top. Her dog, Arrow, a collie, was still asleep in the corner of her room. Eve called Arrow over, and begrudgingly Arrow pulled her self out of her bed, huffing at Eve she followed Eve down the stairs.

Eve put her collar on and opened the door, smelling the summer air. She pulled her ear bud case out, and started her playlist. Calling Arrow, she stepped outside to the side walk, listening to Elise., lit with just the street lights. Eve walked down a couple blocks, still a little groggy, watching the sun slowly peek over the horizon. As she turned the corner to her street, she saw the sun now half way over the horizon. Stepping inside, she un-cliped Arrow and walked passed her mom who was starting the pan to make her self some breakfast before work. Eve hurried up the stairs, Arrow trailing behind her. Eve then went into her bathroom, and started the shower to wash her hair.

After Eve gets ready, she goes over to Arrow, gives her a scratch on the head, and goes down stairs. She throws 2 bagels in the toaster, and starts making her lunch for school. "You ready?" her mom asks as she reaches for the keys. "I just got to finish making my lunch," replies Eve. "Okay," her mom says as she heads towards the door, "I'll wait for you in the car." Eve responds with a nod, and quickly threw the rest of her food in her bag.

Stepping into the car, she couldn't help but notice the missing wedding band on her mom's finger. Feeling a sense of distrust, and very, very strong feelings of anger, Eve turned towards the window, her body tensing up. Eve knew her mom heard her silence. As they were pulling out the drive way, Eve heard her mom take a breathe, as if to speak, then let it out and turn on the radio.

Eve was just fine with this. She didn't have anything to say. It wasn't like she hated her parents, she just didn't want to talk them about what they were doing. On the way to school, Eve grabbed a book out of her bag, and read the rest of the way there.

At school, as Eve stepped out of the car, her mother called to her, "I love you." "I love you to," responded Eve. As pissed as she was at her parents, she didn't have it in her to ignore her mom at an I love you. It was to heartless, and Eve knew it would just make her feel like crap. Stepping through those double doors, a sense of nostalgia filled her. She remembered all those Summer Marching Band days. It felt more like home now than her "true home" ever did. With a sigh, she walked into the band hall and found her locker.

She heard BJ say something behind her, and she turned around. She smiled, and walked up to her. "So...how was your day off?" Eve asked.

"You mean that half a day off we got?" laughed BJ, "It was good."

"I'm going to get to class, I'm not 100% sure where it is," said Eve.

"I'll come with you."

Eve and BJ walked the long walk down to the 700 hall. Eve complained, "I don't want to have to walk this far every morning."

"Oh, you'll be okay," teased BJ

"No, no I won't, and it's the only class I have this far down in the school."

BJ just laughed. They talked about their schedules and what they had done with their precious extra 3 hours they had gotten this morning. "I'm am not ready for tomorrow morning," groaned BJ.

"I don't think it will be that bad."

"No, you don't get it, I could barely wake up this morning. I'm not ready to get up 3 HOURS earlier."

"True, it will probably hit me in a week, though. I doubt this week I'll be tired. Next week though, oof. I'm not ready for that," replied Eve. They came up on the Eve's first period, "Well, wish me luck. I have to socialize with normal kids."

"Ugh, the horror. You. Have to socialize? I can't imagine," laughed BJ.

Eve bumped her in the side, "I guess I'll see you at lunch?"

"Yeah, see you at lunch."

Just then the bell rang, "Crap, I'm going to be late on my first day," said BJ.

Eve replied, "Like you care."

"True"

Eve watched BJ walk down the hall, with a half-fake smile she stepped inside her first period. She had English, which she didn't mind, she liked to write and she liked to read, just, English was so boring. She felt like she learned the same thing year after year. Finding a seat by the door, towards the back corner of the room, she sat down. The teacher stood up and let in the last of the few stragglers.

The teacher said, "I'll wait to start introducing myself until a few minutes, there are always some freshmen a few minutes late, but while we wait, I'll call role." As the teacher called role, Eve pulled out some notecards. Flipping them over she stared doodling colorful blobs on them. After role call was over, and the last straggler had walked in, the teacher started introducing herself. The teacher, Ms. Terrisa, went over the basic first day of school slide show that every teacher does. Where she went to college, her pets and family, ect.

After the presentation, Ms. Terrisa announced we would have an research assignment due by the end of the week at midnight. Eve pulled out her chromebook and pulling up the assignment. Eve grabbed her earbuds out of her bag and started listening to Roe Kappara.

It was lunch time and Eve was ready to see BJ. It had been a long day and they don't have any classes together the first half of the day. Eve walked into the cafeteria, and looked around trying to find BJ. Eve remembered that BJ's 4th period was on the other end of the school, so Eve had likely gotten there first. Picking an empty table, Eve sat down and started unpacking her lunch.

Eve kept looking anxiously up at the entrance, but didn't see BJ. After a minute or so, Eve started stressing out. She pulled out her phone to text BJ.

Eve: Where are you?

BJ: Sry, I was in the band hall grabbing my lunch bag. I'll be down there in a minute.

Eve: 👍

Eve was slightly annoyed BJ hadn't mentioned anything about being late to lunch, but she let it go. It wasn't really that big of a deal. Figuring she had time, Eve pulled out her chromebook and started working on the assignment from English. Eve felt is was a little stupid how there was only one class out of all her morning classes that expected homework on the first day. It wasn't even a little assignment. It was a research paper of sorts. Granted, not a long research paper, but still. They had to go back and research the history of something they were interested, and write a paper of it that was 1,500 words long.

Bored, Eve grabbed her phone and gave up on working. Putting her earbuds back in, she listened to a podcast while waiting for BJ. What is taking her so long? Eve asked herself. Eve pulled out her phone to text BJ when she walked in the cafeteria doors.

BJ sat down with a sigh. "It's a long walk from the band hall to the cafeteria." "So, how's your first day of school going?" Bj asked.

"Good, I don't really mind my morning teachers. I doubt I'll be as lucky with my afternoon teachers."

"You always have to have that one teacher you hate, or at the very least strongly dislike," replied BJ.

"Either way, I'm just ready to get home."

When the dismissal bell rang, Eve was first out the door. She was ready to get home. She was overstimulated and tired of dealing with people. She grabbed her flute fast, and headed out of the band hall doors before anyone could stop her.
