Chapter 1
The pink and orange hues of the sunset cast Claudia’s already striking features into an ethereal beauty. Her angular face was framed by a shawl of inky silk - long, red hair that hung down to her waist like a curtain of fire. Beneath the cascade of crimson silk lay alabaster skin that seemed to shimmer in the dying light, delicate and flawless. Her deep green eyes danced with a determination that bordered on desperation as Claudia contemplated what the future held for her; fame and fortune had been hers, but it hadn’t brought her happiness. She wanted more than just modelling, she wanted to act in Los Angeles. With each passing year the industry had become harsher, with offers of work becoming increasingly sparse as she neared the age of thirty - when she’d be deemed too ‘mature’ for modelling. But none of this mattered anymore - Claudia had made up her mind, there would be no more modelling for her.
As Claudia studied her own image on the billboard, a familiar voice called out from behind. “Hey, I know that face!”
She turned to find her younger sister Claire beaming and bounding towards her. Her peridot eyes danced with an infectious joy that seemed to electrify everyone around her, and Claudia couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for how lucky she was to have such a supportive sibling. “You look incredible!” Claire exclaimed as she looked up at the towering advertisement. “I’m so proud of you, sis!”
“Thanks,” Claudia replied, managing a weak smile. Despite her success, she couldn’t shake off the nagging feeling of unease that always accompanied her in social situations. That was where Claire came in—her confidant, her rock, her support system, who somehow knew how to help Claudia navigate the complexities of life.
“Are you okay?” Claire asked, sensing her sister’s discomfort. “Want to grab a coffee and talk about it?”
“Sure.” Claudia nodded, and they began walking down Rundle Street, lined with bustling cafes and restaurants. As they went inside one of the cafés, the noise hit Claudia like a tidal wave—the clatter of cups and saucers, people chatting and laughing, the hiss of the espresso machine—it all made her hands tremble ever so slightly.
“Remember our breathing exercises?” Claire whispered gently, guiding her sister to a quieter corner of the café. They sat down, and Claudia focused on taking slow, deep breaths in sync with Claire.
“Better?” Claire asked, and Claudia nodded, grateful for her sister’s understanding.
“Much better, thank you,” Claudia sighed, her grip on her cup of coffee steadying. “I just... I can’t help but feel like there’s more to life than modelling, you know? I want to act, to really make something of myself.”
“Then let’s make it happen,” Claire replied, her voice full of determination. “We’ll do whatever it takes for you to chase your dreams, Claudia. The U S of A is waiting for you!”
Claudia looked into her sister’s unwavering eyes and felt a newfound sense of resolve. With Claire by her side, she could face her struggles head-on and finally pursue the passion that had been burning inside her for so long.
Claudia watched as the last of the orange and pink hues from the setting sun disappeared over the horizon. Darkness now settled across her small apartment, with only a few candles and tiny LED lights offering feeble warmth in the chill night air. Seated at her grand piano, she effortlessly played a complex piece by Chopin, her fingers dancing nimbly across the keys. As the final notes rang out, she closed her eyes and let the music resonate within her.
“Wow,” Claire exclaimed from the doorway, her eyes wide with admiration. “You never cease to amaze me, Claudia.”
“Thanks,” Claudia replied bashfully, her cheeks tinged with a hint of blush. From the corner of the room, the faint hum of her computer signalled the completion of her latest mathematical algorithm—a testament to her brilliance in more than one field.
“Is that the cover?” Claire asked, gesturing towards the glossy magazine on the coffee table. Claudia’s striking face adorned the front, framed by flowing locks of ebony hair. ‘Vgue Magazine’ was emblazoned across the top in bold letters, marking the pinnacle of her modelling career.
“Yep,” Claudia said with a sigh, only partially satisfied. She knew she had so much more to offer the world than just her beauty.
“Hey, why don’t we watch ‘Contact’ starring Jodie Foster tonight? It’s supposed to be really good; Lily seem to think so anyway.” Claire suggested, hoping to inspire her sister’s passion for acting. “I heard it has some great performances. It might give you some ideas for your next audition.”
“Sounds perfect,” Claudia agreed, a spark lighting up her eyes.
Later that evening, they sat together on the couch, their eyes glued to the screen as the compelling story unfolded before them. Yet the characters felt dead to her, their emotions hard to grasp, but they inspired Claudia to mimic their emotions, to act out those emotions that she didn’t quite get. As tears welled up in their eyes during a particularly moving scene, she couldn’t help but envision herself embodying a character just as powerfully.
“See?” Claire whispered, sensing her sister’s thoughts. “You could do that too, Claudia. Maybe even better.”
“Really?” Claudia murmured; her gaze still fixed on the screen.
“Absolutely,” Claire confirmed. “You have unquestionable talent and enthusiasm for acting. All you need is the opportunity to show everyone your abilities.”
Claudia thought of one of the last scenes in the movie where Jodie Foster’s character confesses that her journey to space may not have ever happened. Claudia moved a bit in her seat as she acted out the scene they’d just watched.
“Because I can’t!” Claudia repeated the lines with emotion, her face filled with frustration, “I... had an experience, I can’t prove it... I can’t even explain it, but everything that I know as a human being, everything that I am, tells me that it was real!” Tears rolling down her face, she continued, “I was given something wonderful something that changed me forever, a vision... of the universe... “Claudia continued to the end and finished “but that continues to be my wish.” Claudia smiled and dried her tears.
Claire’s mouth dropped open and her eyes widened in amazement. “What!?,” she exclaimed. “That was absolutely incredible! How did you do that?”
“Well, I just remembered the exact words and imagined myself as that person,” Claudia said, a blush rising to her cheeks.
“That’s it!” Claire declared, laughing with delight. “We’re going to Hollywood!”
Claudia’s chest swelled with hope as she considered her sister’s words. She knew she had the potential to succeed in a film or play—it was just a matter of harnessing her unique abilities and overcoming her challenges.
“Alright,” she declared as they turned the TV off. “I’ll keep chasing my dreams. I won’t give up until I make it in the world of acting.”
Claire locked eyes with her sister and solemnly declared, “Me neither.” She tightened her grip on their intertwined hands, feeling the warmth of a bond that was perhaps unbreakable. Their future suddenly seemed brighter as they realized that they were stronger together than apart.
The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over Adelaide. Claudia sat at her makeshift vanity in her small apartment, meticulously applying makeup as she prepared for another night of rehearsals. She practiced reciting her lines under her breath, her voice barely audible above the hum of the city outside her window.
“Hey, sis,” Claire called out from the living room, her eyes glued to her laptop screen. “You’ve got mail!”
“Really?” Claudia replied, curiosity piqued. “From whom?”
“An American talent agency,” Claire announced with a grin. “I sent them an email a while back, and they saw your cover on Vgue Magazine and now they want you to audition for a minor role in an upcoming movie!”
“Me? In a Hollywood movie?” Claudia’s heart raced with excitement, her hands shaking ever so slightly as she tried to finish her makeup. She couldn’t believe it—the opportunity she’d been dreaming of was finally within reach.
“Yep!” Claire beamed, walking over and placing the laptop on the vanity. “Take a look for yourself.”
Claudia scanned the email, her eyes widening with each line. The offer was legitimate, and the film—an indie drama—sounded like the perfect vehicle to showcase her acting skills. But it also meant leaving the comfort of Adelaide and venturing into the unknown.
“Wow,” she whispered, her mind racing with the possibilities. “I can’t believe this is happening.”
“Believe it, sis,” Claire said gently, resting a hand on her shoulder. “This is your chance to show the world what you’re made of.”
“But...what about us?” Claudia asked hesitantly, twisting a strand of hair around her finger. “What about our life here in Adelaide?”
“Look, Claudia,” Claire began, her tone serious yet tender. “Our life here is...comfortable. But we both know you’re destined for something greater. Your talent, your passion—they’re too big for this city. You need to chase your dreams, and if that means moving to the states, then I’ll support you every step of the way.”
Claudia looked into her sister’s eyes, searching for any hint of doubt or hesitation, but all she found was unwavering faith. She knew Claire was right—she’d never be truly happy until she pursued her dreams with everything she had.
“Okay,” Claudia breathed, a determined glint in her eye. “Let’s do it. Let’s move to America.”
“Really?” Claire’s face lit up with joy. “You mean it?”
“Absolutely,” Claudia confirmed, her voice steady and resolute. “I won’t let fear hold me back any longer. It’s time for me to take control of my destiny and show the world what I can do.”
“That’s my girl,” Claire grinned, pulling her sister into a tight embrace. “We’ll make it happen, together.”
As they held each other, basking in the possibilities that lay ahead, Claudia could feel the weight of her doubts and fears melting away. For the first time in her life, she felt truly empowered, ready to conquer whatever challenges awaited her in pursuit of her dreams. With Claire by her side, there was nothing she couldn’t achieve.
The morning sun was waking up, casting a warm orange glow over the city of Adelaide. The skyline was an eclectic mix of modern skyscrapers and historic sandstone buildings, reflecting the city’s unique blend of tradition and progress. As Claudia gazed out at the view from their apartment window, she couldn’t help but marvel at how far she’d come.
“Adelaide has so much to offer,” Claire mused, joining her sister by the window. “Look at all the amazing cafés and restaurants we’ve discovered together.”
“True,” Claudia agreed, her eyes drifting towards Rundle Mall, the usually bustling shopping district filled with vibrant street art and lively buskers. As much as she loved her hometown, however, she knew that it wasn’t enough to contain her dreams.
“Remember what I said earlier, Claudia. Your talent and passion are too big for this city. Moving to the USA will give you access to opportunities you can’t even begin to imagine here.” Claire’s voice was earnest and determined.
Claudia turned to face her sister, taking in her encouraging expression. “I know you’re right, Claire. It’s just...leaving Adelaide means leaving behind everything we’ve known. Our family, our friends, our favourite spots along the river.”
“Change is always scary,” Claire acknowledged, placing a reassuring hand on Claudia’s shoulder. “But think about what you’ll gain. You’ll be able to work with world-class directors, star in major productions, and collaborate with other talented artists.”
Claudia nodded slowly, processing her sister’s words. She knew that if she wanted to achieve her dreams, she would have to step out of her comfort zone and embrace the unknown. “You’re right, Claire. I can’t let my fears hold me back. And besides, we’ll still have each other, no matter where we are in the world.”
“Exactly,” Claire smiled, her eyes shining with pride. “And I’ll be there to support you every step of the way.”
“Thank you,” Claudia murmured, feeling a surge of gratitude towards her sister. “I couldn’t do this without you.”
As they stood together, looking out at the city that had been their home for so long, Claudia felt a mix of excitement and trepidation building within her. But with Claire by her side, she knew that she had the strength to face whatever challenges awaited her in pursuit of her dreams.
“Let’s start planning our big move, shall we?” Claire suggested, her enthusiasm contagious.
“Absolutely,” Claudia agreed, determination settling in her chest. “It’s time for us to chase our dreams and show the world what we’re made of.”
With that, the sisters turned from the window and began their journey towards a new chapter in their lives—one filled with endless possibilities and the promise of success.
In the dim light of early morning, Claudia walked through the quiet streets of Adelaide, her heels clicking rhythmically against the pavement. The city was just beginning to stir as she made her way to the studio where she worked as a model. As she passed by the familiar cafes and restaurants that lined the streets, Claudia couldn’t help but think of how mundane her life had become.
“Morning, Claudia,” said one of her colleagues, greeting her with a warm smile as she entered the studio.
“Good morning,” she replied, her voice soft but devoid of emotion. Though she appreciated the kindness, it did little to fill the void. Due to her struggles with social situations, Claudia found it difficult to form any real connections outside of her relationship with her sister, Claire.
Her workday progressed as usual, with Claudia posing gracefully for countless shots under the scrutinizing gaze of photographers and stylists alike. She moved with an air of confidence and poise, her stunning beauty shining through every image. However, beneath the elegant exterior, she was plagued by never-ending doubts and concerns.
In between shoots, Claudia found herself in the crowded lunchroom, surrounded by her chattering colleagues. The cacophony of voices and clinking cutlery seemed amplified in her sensitive ears, causing her head to ache slightly. It was moments like these that her difficulty with social interactions became most apparent – the sensory overload overwhelming her and making her long for solitude.
“Hey Claudia, want to join us for dinner tonight? We’re going to that new Italian place,” one of her coworkers asked, breaking into her thoughts.
“Uh, thank you, but I can’t tonight,” Claudia stammered, desperately trying to mask her discomfort. She hated lying, but the thought of navigating yet another noisy, bustling restaurant filled her with dread.
“Alright, maybe next time,” her coworker replied, shrugging off the rejection with a smile.
Claudia forced a smile in return and quickly excused herself from the room, seeking refuge in the quiet hallway outside. As she leaned against the cold wall, she closed her eyes and took several deep breaths, trying to calm her racing thoughts.
“Focus, Claudia,” she whispered to herself, repeating the mantra that Claire had taught her years ago. It helped, but only just.
As the day drew to a close, Claudia began to feel the familiar weight of loneliness settling on her shoulders. Despite her success as a model and the countless people who surrounded her every day, it seemed as though she was always on the fringes, unable to form the connections she so desperately craved.
“Maybe things will be different in the USA,” she mused silently, taking comfort in the thought of her impending move and the opportunities it would bring. With renewed determination, she vowed to continue pursuing her dreams – no matter the challenges that lay ahead.
Later that evening, Claudia and Claire sat together at their kitchen table, sipping cups of steaming chamomile tea. The soft glow of candlelight cast flickering shadows on the walls, while a gentle breeze rustled the leaves outside.
“Alright, so we need to start researching visas and housing options,” Claire said, pulling out a notepad and pen. “Our best bet is probably an O-1 visa for you, since it’s meant for people with extraordinary abilities in their field.”
Claudia nodded, her mind racing with thoughts of their impending move. The prospect of starting a new life in the USA was both thrilling and terrifying, but she knew that pursuing her acting dreams was worth the effort.
“Let’s also look into finding an apartment in Los Angeles,” she suggested, her voice filled with determination. “That’s where most of the acting opportunities will be.”
Claire smiled and began jotting down notes. “I’ll reach out to some friends who live in the area and see if they can give us any recommendations.”
As the sisters continued to discuss their plans late into the night, the enormity of the task ahead weighed heavily on Claudia’s shoulders. But with every logistical detail they ironed out, she felt a growing sense of excitement and anticipation for the journey that lay ahead – a journey that would bring her closer to realizing her dreams.
