Chapter 1
Having twelve other siblings means not everyone gets the right amount of attention, and parents don’t hide the fact that they have favourites.
Having parents that argue a lot, and one of those parents being abusive, means that we don’t usually get attention for good reasons. At least, I don’t.
I wasn’t a planned pregnancy, and even if I was, my mother cheated on my abusive father in order to have me.
I’m literally a walking mistake.
My twin brother, Jack, tells me not to say that. He seems.. older than me.
Jack acts like Fred. Fred is our older brother. He’s sixteen and says we’re all alive for a reason. When I asked why father was alive, he told me that not everyone was alive for a good reason.
Right now, I’m leaning against the front door in the cold night. Mother threw me out.
I know I’ll die out here. I’ve already had hallucinations of creatures and people. I know they’re hallucinations because they disappear.
I look up at the stars. It’s beautiful.. you can see the Milky Way!
My eye lids start to close on their own. I’m tired. Maybe resting my eyes will make me feel better?
As I let sleep grasp hold of me, I hear Sophie yell my name, and I think I saw her running this way…
I open my eyes, lifting my head groggily. I’m beside the fire, wrapped in a heated blanket. I feel toasty warm.
As I lay my head back down, it occurred to me that two girls were fighting. I listened in, trying to hear who it was.
“YOU LEFT HER OUT IN THE COLD?! AT NIGHT?!?!” That was Sophie. So she really had found you.
“WHAT ON EARTH MAKES YOU THINK THAT THAT WAS OKAY?!”
“WHY SHOULD I CARE, SHE STOLL FROM HER SCHOOL, SHE DOESNT WANT TO MAKE FRIENDS, AND SHES A WALKING MISTAKE!! SHE SAYS IT HERSELF!!!” Mothers voice. Sophie was fighting with mother.
You stood up, or, at least tried to. You felt a bolt of pain go up your right leg. You looked down. ‘Is that.. Did I get…?’ I screamed.
Sophie rushed into the room, mother right behind her.
Hot tears welled out of my eyes as I screamed. Sophie looked down.
I had gotten frostbite on one of my toes, and the tie had just fallen off.
Blood surged out of my foot as I screamed and wept.
Sophie grabbed the landline and quickly dialed 911. Mother stared at me in shock.
“What’s going on?” I heard Fred, and what I guessed to be Jake, rush down the stairs.
Jake saw what was happening first. He stared at my foot with wide eyes.
Fred rushed over to me the moment he saw my foot. He hugged me tight.
“An ambulance is on its way!” Sophie told Fred as I sobbed into his chest.
“Katie, are you okay?” Jack asked me when I was allowed to have visitors.
I nodded at him. I didn’t want to speak.
Father was just outside. He hated the sound of my voice.
It reminded him of his sister, who had died in a car accident when she was three.
“Did they glue the toe back on?” He asked.
I shook my head. The toe wasn’t in good condition, and surgery was expensive, so wasn’t allowed my toe back.
“I’m tired..” I mumbled. It was hard to sleep her, when my roommate was loud at night, and I had tests during the day.
Jack nodded this time. “Don’t worry, I’ll visit you tomorrow.”
smiled at him before letting sleep consume myself.
