Prologue
That this has been a work of a lifetime is an understatement. I originally began this project as a kind of self-help therapy and, like Topsy, it just “growed.” As the writing progressed and several people helped me with their critical review of my writing, I found more and more of the insights I was revealing were unique to this project and did not appear anywhere else.
Expanding my original manuscript, I delved more deeply into the current pop-culture misconceptions about Gender Identity Disorder, transgenderism, transsexuality, and even the phenomenon of cross-dressing. What I found was a lot of purposefully titillating and sensationalized garbage. I decided to undertake the effort to try to untie this Gordian knot and replace learned “conjecture” with actual experience from a personal point of view.
No acknowledgement would be complete, fair or honest without expressing my love and gratitude for my wife, Nancy, and her family without whom I would not have had the support, the guidance, or critical discernment necessary to make this effort a success. I hope you, the reader, come away with a better understanding of what the transgendered are and especially what we are not. In any case, thank you for taking the time to listen.
