Chapter 1: Guess who's in town?
Alex Reynolds stood tall amidst the flickering lights of the Chicago Fire Department station, his posture straight, the flames of dedication in his eyes mirrored by the fireman’s emblem etched onto his uniform. For him, honor wasn’t just a word; it was a way of life.
As the alarm klaxon blared, summoning the team to yet another emergency, Alex’s gaze swept the room. His comrades moved with choreographed precision, a routine built on practice and trust.Alex usually thrived within this controlled chaos, but today he was distracted.
His mind went back to the conversation he’d had earlier in the day with his fellow firefighter and best friend, Jake. They’d been shooting the shit as usual, when Jake casually mentioned, “By the way, guess who’s coming to town?”
“Sophia, your favorite ex-girlfriend?”, Alex grinned.
“Ugh, hell no, thank god for that. Nah, I’m talking about Em. Remember, my younger sister Emily?”
Emily Parker. Beautiful, vivacious, and off-limits. She’d been 18 years old the last time he saw her, and though he’d always felt an attraction to her ever since he’s known her, he hadn’t ever acted on it. Nor did he plan to. She was his best friend’s younger sister, for Christ’s sake. And if there was one standard Alex held himself to, it was his own personal moral code.
Though five years had passed since they’d last met, the steadfast rule that separated them remained in place. It was a commandment etched into the fabric of his being: “Thou shalt not cross the line with your best friend’s sister.”
Now, as he put on his protective gear, memories of Emily’s infectious laughter and mischievous grin flitted through his mind, tugging at the edges of his resolve. She was the embodiment of youthful exuberance, her presence a magnetic force he couldn’t deny.
But loyalty trumped desire, and the unwritten moral code stood firm. Alex was determined to guard that boundary, even as his heart wrestled with the attraction that stirred whenever Emily’s name was mentioned.
With a final glance around the station, Alex turned towards the awaiting firetruck. His steps were steady, his mind focused on the imminent task at hand. As the engine roared to life and the team rushed toward the blaring siren, he pushed aside any thoughts of Emily, determined to uphold the code that governed his actions, both on and off duty.
The wail of the siren drowned the echoes of his conflicting emotions. He was in control. He could do this. All he had to do was stay away from the temptation that was his best friend’s sister.

The bustling city of Chicago welcomed Emily Parker with its familiar embrace, the skyline painting a vivid backdrop against the canvas of her memories. As she breathed in the scent of the city and took in the crowded streets, she felt good to be back home.
After spending 4 years in college and another year working at a top event management firm in New York, Emily was now armed with experience and a newfound confidence to conquer her dreams in Chicago, the city where her roots ran deep. She had a new job in a prestigious wedding planning company, and a new apartment she was sharing with Nadiya, her best friend from high school who worked as a chef.
As she made her way through the labyrinth of streets, memories from the past collided with the present. The laughter of her youth echoed amidst the clamor of the city. She remembered playing at the park, hanging out with her friends in high school, and going to concerts with her brother. But amidst the chaos, one name resonated louder than the rest—Alex Reynolds.
Alex, her brother Jake’s friend, had been a constant presence in her life ever since the former two became best friends in high school. Back then, he was always hanging out at their house because of the problems at his own house and was basically a part of the family. She’d had a huge crush on him back then. In fact, she had always fantasized that Alex would be her first boyfriend, and that she would lose her virginity to him.
But even though they had shared secret jokes and fleeting glances, their connection always teetering on the edge of something unspoken, Alex had always treated her respectfully, like a younger sister.
After moving to New York, she had casually dated a few guys here and there, but none of them lived up to the fantasy of Alex in her head. Thanks to that, she was annoyingly still a virgin.
And now, as she returned to the city, she couldn’t shake the lingering curiosity about the man Alex had become.
A text message from Jake disrupted her thoughts, breaking the reverie of memories.
’Dinner tonight at home. Don’t be late, sis’
Emily smiled. ‘I remember! I’ll be there on time, don’t worry’
She quickened her pace, eager to reunite with her goofy, yet lovable family.
