The Beginning

In New York City a girl with great dreams is to start her accomplishments. Serena Knight, 20 years of age didn’t care for the way others judged her. She was a girl who only cared about what she thinks of herself and that would be an independent and mature lady.

Her dream was to work in one of Tokyo’s leading media channels and live up to her expectations. After 4 years of journalism school, she managed to graduate in mass communication, so she leaves for Japan to start her journey and this is where it all begins.

“Finally here!” she states with excitement as she walks out of the airport. She hauls a taxi and shows directions to her apartment as she couldn’t converse in Japanese. After arriving at the apartment she meets with the landlady, an old Japanese woman very fluent in English.

“Welcome to Japan Ms. Knight” she addresses her.

“Thank you so much Mrs. Tomoko” Serena replies with a smile. “It certainly is a great place to be” she states

“It is, It is,” Mrs. Tomoko agrees as she shows Serena to her front door.

“Well then Ms. Knight please take a good rest and let me know if you need anything” Mrs. Tomoko smiles

“Thank you and you do not need to address me as Ms. Knight just call me by my name, that would be fine” She replies

Mrs. Tomoko and Serena share one last smile and Mrs. Tomoko takes her leave.

‘The view is amazing!’ She thinks to herself as she stares out the french windows of her gallery. Her apartment was on the 8th floor of a 10-story building with a view of the city.

After taking a deep breath of her new apartment, Serena checks her email, surprised to see the media channels she worked hard for have given her an opportunity for an interview the next day.

She jumps with excitement and feels herself to be lucky.

“I’ll give it my best tomorrow!” she states with confidence.

After a good night’s rest, Serena leaves for her interview. She greets Mrs. Tomoko on her way out and the other elderly people living in her building. It wasn’t difficult for her to find the media house, considering how famous “The JNo1 News Channel ″ is.

Serena takes a deep breath and walks into the office with nervousness steaming out of her.

As she waits in the waiting room her heartbeat gets louder and louder with every passing minute. She notices someone across the room staring at her for a while and Serena smiles awkwardly, but the person stays expressionless and then walks over and introduces herself, taking a seat beside Serena

“Hey I’m Lizzy, I’m so sorry for staring, it’s just that you’re really beautiful, you’re not from here right?” She questions.

“Yes I’m not from here” Serena replies.

“Oh me neither!” Lizzy states. Serena looks at her with a blank expression on her face not knowing what exactly to say.

Silence strings between the both of them. “Awkward much?” Lizzy chuckles.

“I just don’t talk very freely with a person whom I have just met,” Serena says.

This annoys Lizzy “Well you can either be a loner or try to meet new people” she shrugs.

Serena looks at Lizzy before saying “I’m sorry I guess I take the saying ‘Don’t talk to strangers’ very seriously”.

Both of them stare at each other for a second and burst out in laughter “Well that’s one way of putting it” Lizzy says while laughing.

As they try to control their laughs Serena gets called out to enter the interview room, she gathers her confidence and walks in with the other people who attended. To the very last second of the duration, Serena couldn’t help but fidget due to the nervousness.

Once the interviews were done, all the attendees were told to wait in the other room for a final word. The President, Mr. Callahan walks out and thanks everyone for their time and states their choice of candidates.

As the tension in the room increases so does Serena’s heartbeat.

“Ms. Serena Knight and Ms. Lizzy Gomes Welcome Aboard.” Mr. Callahan states.

Serena’s face lights up with excitement and joy and she thanks Mr. Callahan. As everyone leaves the room, Lizzy and Serena are asked to wait in Mr. Suzuwara’s office, the Director.

As Mr. Suzuwara and Mr. Callahan enters the office, Lizzy and Serena greet and thank them for the position. On hearing this Mr. Callahan states that a task will be assigned to show their potential and dedication to the work. The position stands as an Anchor and it will be their task to cover the Film Premier & manage at least five interviews with the cast.

The one who manages to complete the task with most interviews will be the one to finally get a final position. Serena is a little taken aback and she glances over at Lizzy who to her surprise has her game face on.

As both the girls leave the company, Lizzy stretches her hand towards Serena stating boldly and with confidence “I won’t lose to you, give it your best shot”.

Serena smiles and they share a strong handshake.

As both the ladies state war against each other and walk home in their separate directions, Serena sighs and thinks to herself

“I came a long way to chicken out now”

And thus Serena’s journey began.

Off to a good start! I'm really interested in the exposition in this chapter; you showed the backstory as well as the characters' personalities in a well-paced manner so we can jump right into the action within the next few chapters. The only thing I noticed, really, as someone else stated were some missing punctuation marks, and I noticed one misplaced period.
