Chapter 1; Present
“Got my mind on your body and your body on my mind.
Got a taste for the cherry, I just need to take a bite.”
Cool for the Summer by Demi Lovato.
“What’s with the crying?”
Debby turned and found a handsome man looking at her with a questioning gaze. Despite appearing intoxicated, she could tell that the man before her was very handsome—at least to Debby. With the remaining awareness she had, Debby carefully studied the handsome man’s face. His firm jawline, his pointed nose, his sharp eyes, and his thick black hair; he looked like the handsome models Debby often saw in magazines.
“Like what you see, beautiful?”
Hearing the question from the man instantly made Debby blush. Debby blinked her eyes and averted her gaze from his face. “S-sorry,” she stuttered.
The man chuckled softly at Debby’s slightly stuttered apology. Hearing his laughter, which sounded pleasant to Debby’s ears, made her unconsciously bite her lower lip.
“No problem,” he replied, which was met with a nod from Debby. “I’m Rey.” The man extended his right hand towards Debby, inviting her to introduce herself.
For the first time, a handsome man initiating the introduction made Debby feel a bit nervous. Clearing her throat, Debby accepted his handshake and responded, “Debby.”
“So, what’s with the crying?” Rey repeated his question.
Debby took a long breath and glanced at the dance floor, which now resembled a sea of people. His question prompted Debby to revisit the events of a few hours ago—an experience that led her to act impulsively by going to the nightclub and downing several glasses of vodka, knowing her tolerance for alcohol was so low.
“Hey, what’s wrong?”
Exhaling once more and furrowing her brow, Debby replied, “Do you think I’m not pretty enough?”
Rey, the man, looked surprised by her question. He fell silent and seemed to be examining Debby’s appearance in detail. It made her feel somehow embarrassed to be stared at so openly by him.
“You are beautiful, sexy as hell, and charming. I think you are more pretty than a woman here.”
His statement succeeded in making Debby blush.
Does he really think like that about me?Suddenly, negative thoughts rushed through her mind so rapidly that Debby couldn’t stop them.Or... did he say that out of pity for me? I mean, look at me now; messy makeup and hair, clothes far from sexy. Not to mention my swollen eyes from crying too much.
With Debby’s appearance like this, Rey’s statement clearly sounded like a polite gesture towards a grieving Debby.
Although she knew it was just Rey’s polite gesture towards her, she couldn’t stop herself from saying, “Then, why did he leave me? If—”
“Maybe he’s an asshole for leaving a beautiful lady like you?”
Debby gazed at Rey, who was now smiling broadly at her in silence. Still not understanding why Rey found her beautiful despite her current sad appearance.
Not wanting to dwell on it further or delve deeper into Rey’s words, Debby just chuckled softly and thanked him in response.
Afterward, they talked about many things. Debby herself was slightly surprised to find out that she and Rey had a lot in common. In fact, Debby couldn’t hide her own surprise when Rey told her his home country; Indonesia.
A little info about Debby, she is currently in one of the nightclubs in Melbourne. Debby, whose full name is Deborah Natasha, decided to leave Indonesia after completing her high school and continue her studies to pursue higher education in Australia.
Falling in love with Australia, Debby decided to stay and work in a private company after finishing her schooling.
Actually, it wasn’t surprising to find a man from Indonesia in Melbourne. What actually surprised Debby was; a handsome man from Indonesia approached and invited her to introduce herself at a nightclub.
According to Debby, her appearance is not appealing to Indonesian men. Debby has a yellowish skin tone, her eyes are large but appear small when she laughs, her dimples are visible on her cheekbones when she laughs, and her height is only one hundred fifty-three centimeters.
Overall, there is nothing outstanding about Debby. No one has ever praised her beauty except her parents andthat person.
“You have this effortless grace about you and have this magnetic presence that’s hard to ignore. You are beautiful and captivating. It’s like you were born to stand out.”
Ugh! Suddenly, Debby remembered one of the compliments given to her by that person. It’s been ten years and across different continents, Debby’s mind and body still remember his words. Is it because that person was the first in everything for Debby that all of this is so hard to forget?
“Debby.” Rey’s voice successfully diverted Debby’s thoughts. “Dance with me?”
Debby snorted upon hearing his question. “Thanks for offering, but no.”
Rey sighed and looked at her, his lips pursed. Making him look adorable at the moment.
Wait, adorable?Debby shook her head. How many glasses has she had tonight? How can she call a mature man like Rey adorable?
“Come on! You are no fun, you know that?”
Debby shrugged nonchalantly and decided to look elsewhere. If she stared at his face for too long, Debby worried she would agree to his invitation and embarrass herself on the dance floor.
“Debby, please?” Rey reached out his hand to grasp both of Debby’s hands and held them. Debby turned back to face him, her eyebrows raised. “Just one dance, please? For me? Yeah?”
Seeing Rey, who seemed unwilling to stop until he got what he wanted, made her exhale deeply before nodding in agreement to his invitation.
“Yas! Thank you!” He exclaimed as he grabbed her wrist and pulled Debby onto the crowded dance floor.
Debby unconsciously smiled as she watched Rey start to dance. Somehow, Rey’s simple moves looked cool to her.
Oh my, it seems like I’m really drunk because everything Rey does now looks cool to me,she thought to herself.
Watching him dance made Debby want to join him. She turned her body around, letting her back face Rey—turning away from him. Debby swayed and occasionally bumped into Rey’s hard front. Debby herself didn’t know what came over her tonight, making her act so boldly to openly tease a man. Debby blamed the amount of alcohol in her system. Not wanting to dwell on all of this, Debby decided to have fun tonight.
“Don’t tempt me, Debby.” Rey warned, his voice filled with caution. Debby just chuckled softly and ignored his words—or rather, Debby didn’t understand the meaning behind his words.
Debby continued to sway until she felt Rey’s hands grip her waist tightly. This made Debby stop and stare at Rey over her shoulder with curiosity.
“I told you before,” He whispered as he briefly kissed Debby’s ear. It sent shivers down Debby’s spine hearing his baritone voice, which somehow sounded sexy to her ears. “Don’t. Tempted. Me.”
Instead of backing away, Debby just grinned and freed herself from Rey’s grasp. Debby folded her arms in front of her chest and raised one eyebrow. Debby herself didn’t know why she was acting so brazenly right now.
“What if I want to do that?”
Rey grinned and moved closer to her. Makes Debby look like her current prey. “You will regret it, Debby.”
“I know I will. But not right now.”
Without thinking, Debby grabbed Rey’s shirt collar, who was standing a few inches in front of her. Debby looked at Rey’s eyes which now looked misty with passion. Receiving a reaction like that made Debby grin slightly before pulling the collar of his shirt and starting to kiss his lips, which felt soft and hot.
Debby gave several kisses to his lips before breaking away from Rey. Before Debby could move her lips any further, Rey immediately closed the distance between their lips again by grabbing the back of Debby’s neck. As if giving a small push to reunite their lips and continue the kiss.
Rey bit her lip lightly. Making Debby sigh and open her mouth wider indirectly. Seeing an opportunity, Rey quickly put his tongue into her mouth to deepen their kiss, and made Debby taste whiskey when their tongues met.
“You have no idea how alluring you look, do you?” His voice husky as he broke their kiss.
Debby remained silent, her mind too foggy to fully absorb his words.
For the first time in her life, Debby found herself kissing someone she didn’t know in the club. She could only hope that Rey was one of the single guys seeking pleasure outside. If not, Debby would feel guilty for whoever Rey’s partner might be. No woman deserved to be hurt like that.
And for the first time in Debby’s ten years since parting ways with that person, she finally felt the heat of such a passionate kiss with a man. Someone who wasn’t that man.
“We need to go out somewhere. Don’t you think so?” Rey said.
“Yeah, I think so.” Debby replied.
Rey gave her a quick peck on the lips before taking Debby’s hand and leading her out of the club.
One thing Debby was certain of about Rey:he was a good kisser.
