Chapter 1
Lucian strode through the mysterious forest in the bright light of the full moon, his heart racing with excitement. His dark hair, deep brown eyes, and black clothing made him almost blend in with the shadows, which only added to his mysterious allure. The eerie calls of owls were lost in the tall, gnarled trees, and Lucian could occasionally make out bats scurrying around, which made the experience all the more magical. Then, to his great delight, he heard a crack, and he immediately stopped and listened. The two black wolves at his side also stopped and turned their ears this way and that, their excitement palpable. Their orange eyes shone eerily, and their white, pointed teeth sparkled in the pale light of the moon.
When everything was perfectly silent, they continued on in a quiet, excited rush. The moss-covered ground muffled their footsteps, creating a mysterious, magical ambience. Nevertheless, the excitement was palpable. But they had to go this way, as they did every full moon. When the moon was at its brightest, Lucian was drawn into the forest. He sensed that this time it would be the last time, and he was thrilled! The night was going to be a special one!
The wind carried the sweet scent of night jasmine, mingled with the earthy aroma of the forest, creating a magical blend that filled the air with a sense of wonder. Lucian’s keen hearing picked up every sound: the soft rustling of leaves, the splashing of distant waterfalls, and the regular breathing of his two companions. It was a symphony of the night, a magnificent melody that made his heart beat to its rhythm.
His thoughts wandered to the legend he had been told since he was a child—the legend of the Moon Companion, a woman who would appear in the light of the full moon and whose fate was inextricably linked to his own. Ever since he transformed, he has been on a quest to find her. But his search had never been successful, so he was determined to keep looking. Gradually, he began to think that the legend was an adventurous story that someone had invented to bring romance into his life. But why would anyone tell a little child a romantic legend?
Lucian pushed his head forward with a grin. There it was again! A soft, crackling sound! Thunder stopped, his ears pricked, and a deep, rumbling growl escaped his throat. His neck fur bristled, and now Storm also turned and fixed his gaze on something in that direction. For a moment, Lucian fought with himself, his mind racing with possibilities. Should he change? In wolf form, he could hear and see better! But he sensed that this time he had to trust his loyal companion, and he was more than happy to do so! According to legend, he had to find the moon companion in human form! If he confronted her in wolf form, the curse that lay over them would remain forever, but he could break it! And even the great moon goddess, Luna, couldn’t break it!
Lucian crouched down between his wolves and laid his hands on their black fur, feeling the warmth of their bodies. „What do you see?“ he asked, his voice deep and warm. The spirit of Thunder was already connecting with his, and he could see through the eyes of his companion what he had discovered—and it was incredible! He saw a gorgeous, graceful figure bathed in silvery moonlight. Her skin shimmered like alabaster, her hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders, and her eyes radiated an unbridled strength and at the same time deep vulnerability. She stood there like an apparition from a dream, bathed in a diffuse light that made her look even more ethereal. Lucian broke the connection to Thunder and stood up with a spring in his step. It had to be his moon companion! She was absolutely gorgeous, so different from him, vulnerable and delicate. She was like the day, and he seemed like the night next to her—a perfect contrast! Could it be true? Was she his soulmate? How could he possibly enter into an eternal bond with such a delicate creature?
He took a step towards her, felt the wolves at his side, and spoke defiantly into the silence: „Who are you?“ he asked, his voice ringing with excitement.
The woman gracefully tilted her head to the side, and a spark of realization and determination flashed in her eyes. „I am Seraphina,“ she replied, her voice as melodious as the song of a nightingale. A shiver ran down Lucian’s spine, and his heart immediately began to race. „I think I’ve been expecting you, Lucian!“
Lucian approached her with a sense of excitement. It could still be a mirage, but it might also be the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen! Or perhaps one of the forest spirits was luring him and his companions into a trap! He gripped Thunder and Storms fur more tightly, eager to feel their pulse and see through their senses. They were so much more than just his companions! In the dark depths of the forest, they were his guardians, ready to protect him! With their senses, they could protect him and warn him of danger in time! But both remained calm as they approached the strange woman, eager to see what would happen next.
„You know my name,“ Lucian said, his voice full of excitement as he reached her. His eyes were fixed firmly on her, full of curiosity and anticipation. He still wasn’t quite sure about her, but he was excited to find out more! „How?“ he asked, his eyes alight with curiosity.
Seraphina smiled, her eyes twinkling with mischief. It was a mysterious smile that raised more questions than it answered. „The stars told me,“ she said, her voice filled with wonder. „Ever since I was a little girl, I knew this moment would come, and I was so excited to see it come true! The stars told me about you, Lucian, the man with the black wolves, who carries the key to my destiny.“
A thrill ran down Lucian’s spine. He was filled with a sense of wonder. He had been told of a legend, a moon companion who had been separated from him by a curse. But no name had ever been mentioned, which made it all the more mysterious! And there was no key either! So what was she talking about? The thought grew in him that she was a delusion of a powerful forest spirit, and he was excited to find out more!
He raised his head defiantly, ready to face whatever came next. His voice boomed with a hint of menace and a touch of dismissal. A hand reached for his side, where he carried his hunting knife. „What key are you talking about? What fate? Why on this night?“
„I’m still working on it,“ Seraphina replied. She took a step towards him, her alabaster-colored hand stretched out and a smile on her face. „The moon is high in the sky! Luna woke me up and sent me here! You’re the only one who can break the curse! It has to be done at the altar of the guardians of the forest! The forces that have brought us together tonight will brook no further delay!“
Lucian felt a deep sense of truth in her words, a resonance that he couldn’t ignore. He looked into the eyes of Thunder and Storm, who looked up at him with unwavering trust. They too agreed with Seraphina, so he surrendered to fate with a smile on his face. If the shimmering woman before him was a mirage, at least he would go down with his companions by his side!
„What do we have to do?“ he asked. But Seraphina was so caught up in the moment that she didn’t notice. She reached out her hand again, and this time, Lucian eagerly took it. Her touch was warm and familiar, as if they had always been destined for each other—and it felt incredible! A wave of heat flooded through him, and he felt it awaken in his loins, sending a thrill through his body. Was this what it felt like to meet your soulmate? It felt incredible!
„We must enter the Path of Shadows!“ Seraphina explained, her eyes alight with excitement. „It is a path that only becomes visible during a full moon, and it leads us to a place beyond this world, where our destiny awaits us.“
Lucian nodded, his determination growing with every heartbeat, and with the warmth she radiated. His wolves sensed it, and Thunder let out a low, rumbling growl. A hint of jealousy spread through the wolf, and he was thrilled by it! But Lucian was determined not to be distracted. If Seraphina was his soulmate, the one intended for him by the moon goddess Luna, she would always be above Thunder and Storm!
„Let’s go! Let’s make the most of this opportunity!“ He looked at his wolves with a gleam in his eye. They lowered their heads in a gesture of submission, eager to please. Although Thunder was clearly struggling, the black wolf was quick to recognize that Lucian was his master. He would follow him anywhere and protect him from any danger, no matter what! „Stay close to us,“ he commanded, and the wolves immediately obeyed, their ears pricked and eyes alert.
Together, they ventured into the heart of the forest, guided by the silvery light of the moon, which now cast a straight line on the forest floor. With every step, they got closer and closer to the mysterious path of shadows! The darkness around them seemed to come alive, as if invisible eyes were watching them, and they felt a rush of excitement. Then, lo and behold, a narrow path opened up before them, lined with tall, ancient trees that Lucian had never seen in this forest before! He was so intrigued that he stopped to take in the scene. The wolves also stopped, their keen senses alert to the new adventure that awaited them. A low, excited whine escaped Storm’s throat. His neck fur bristled, and Lucian realized that his companion was afraid of this mysterious, ominous darkness. The gnarled branches of the giant trees spread out above them like intertwined arms, blocking out the moon’s light in a mysterious, magical way. Not a single ray of light penetrated the darkness, creating an eerie, mysterious atmosphere. This was the Path of Shadows! Lucian felt the magic emanating from this place, an ancient power that permeated the forest and filled every fiber of his being.
„This is the beginning of our journey,“ Seraphina whispered. She pressed closer to Lucian as if she expected him to protect her. He felt a rush of excitement. But the wolf within him rebelled. He would never bow to this excitement. No darkness could conquer him.
„Whatever awaits us, we will face it together.“ Lucian squeezed her hand tighter. „Together,“ he repeated, his voice a quiet promise.
And so they entered the path of shadows.
