Chapter 1: Remembering the Past

Chapter 1: Remembering the Past

The sun dipped slowly behind the hills, casting a soft, golden glow across the city skyline. From her office window on the 30th floor, Sofia watched as the lights of downtown Toronto began to flicker on, one by one, like stars in a concrete sky. It was moments like this when she allowed herself to pause and reflect—something she rarely did, considering how fast-paced her life had become.

The small, bookish girl she once was seemed like a distant memory now. She could still picture herself at fourteen, standing in the shadow of her older sister, Camila. Back then, Sofia was the quiet one, always clinging to a thick novel, her braces gleaming whenever she tried to smile. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to be noticed; it was just that she never knew how to demand attention in a room full of people who were larger than life—especially with Camila around.

Camila was everything Sofia was not: outgoing, popular, effortlessly beautiful. Boys were always vying for her attention, but there was one in particular who seemed captivated by her. Daniel. Sofia’s heart twisted slightly at the thought of him. Even now, all these years later, his image was etched into her memory. He was the boy with the dark, messy hair and the infectious smile, who seemed to have a permanent twinkle in his eye.

He was the one Sofia had watched from afar, her cheeks burning with a blush every time he glanced her way, even if it was only to say, “Hey, Sofia. Seen Camila around?” It had hurt, but she’d swallowed the pain and buried her feelings deep down, convincing herself that she was content being invisible.

The sound of her phone vibrating on the sleek mahogany desk snapped Sofia out of her reverie. She picked it up and saw a message from her best friend, Maya.

“Night out tonight! You’re coming. No excuses. We all need a break, and you definitely do.”

Sofia couldn’t help but smile. Maya had been her rock during her awkward teenage years, the one who saw her potential even when Sofia didn’t. If it weren’t for Maya’s encouragement, Sofia might have stayed hidden behind her books forever. Instead, she’d blossomed into a confident, assertive woman who now ran a multimillion-dollar company.

“Wouldn’t miss it,” Sofia typed back quickly, her fingers flying over the screen.

It had been a long week filled with back-to-back meetings and tough negotiations. As the CEO of her family’s business empire, she was responsible for every decision, every strategy. It was exhausting, but it was also exhilarating. Taking control of the company had been her way of proving—to herself, and maybe to everyone who once overlooked her—that she was capable of so much more than they ever imagined.

She stood up and walked to the full-length mirror on the wall. The woman staring back at her was unrecognizable from the girl she used to be. Her hair, once a frizzy mess, now cascaded in sleek, dark waves down her back. Her braces were long gone, replaced by a confident smile. Sofia had traded her thick, round glasses for contact lenses, revealing her large, almond-shaped eyes. But it wasn’t just the physical changes; it was the way she held herself now—chin up, shoulders back, exuding a quiet, unshakable confidence.

Tonight, she decided, she was going to let loose. She needed a distraction, something to pull her out of the whirlwind of her corporate responsibilities.

The Nightclub: An Unexpected Encounter

The bass thumped through the floor as Sofia stepped into the dimly lit nightclub, her heels clicking against the polished marble. The place was packed with people swaying to the music, laughter and conversations blending into a symphony of noise. Maya spotted her from across the room, waving her over with a grin.

“There she is! The woman of the hour,” Maya teased as Sofia approached. “I was beginning to think you’d bail on me.”

Sofia laughed, pulling her friend into a quick hug. “Not tonight. I needed this more than you know.”

Maya handed her a drink, raising her glass in a toast. “To new beginnings and forgetting old crushes.”

Sofia rolled her eyes but clinked her glass against Maya’s. “I’m not thinking about him,” she lied, taking a sip of her cocktail.

They moved to the dance floor, letting the rhythm of the music take over. Sofia felt the tension of the week melt away as she danced, the pulse of the bass vibrating through her body. She was laughing, her head thrown back, when she felt a sudden prickle at the back of her neck—like she was being watched.

Turning slightly, her eyes scanned the crowd, and there he was.

Daniel.

For a moment, Sofia’s heart stopped. He looked different, yet the same. His hair was still dark, but now it was styled neatly, and he wore a fitted shirt that showed off his athletic build. He looked older, more mature, but the twinkle in his eye was unmistakable. He was leaning against the bar, a glass in hand, watching her with an expression she couldn’t quite read.

Sofia’s breath caught in her throat. Did he recognize her? Did he know who she was now? She almost hoped he didn’t. The last time he saw her, she was just the quiet, nerdy girl who had blended into the background. But the way he was looking at her now—like he was trying to place her, like he was intrigued—made her heart race.

Before she could make up her mind whether to approach him or slip away unnoticed, he pushed off the bar and started walking toward her. The crowd seemed to part for him, and in a matter of seconds, he was standing right in front of her.

“Sofia?” His voice was deep, more resonant than she remembered. He sounded surprised, almost disbelieving.

She raised an eyebrow, her lips curving into a confident smile. “Hello, Daniel. Long time no see.”

He blinked, clearly taken aback. “You… You look—”

“Different?” she supplied, still smiling. “I should hope so.”

He let out a low laugh, running a hand through his hair. “You could say that. I almost didn’t recognize you.”

“That’s the point,” she said coolly, her eyes locking onto his. “People change.”

He looked like he wanted to say more, but Maya interrupted, grabbing Sofia’s hand. “Come on, Sof! Dance with me.”

Sofia hesitated for a split second before letting herself be pulled away. As she turned, she caught the look on Daniel’s face—surprised, maybe a little regretful. But she didn’t have time to dwell on it. She threw herself back into the music, determined not to let the past ruin her night.

A Kiss in the Dark

Hours later, as the night began to wind down, Sofia found herself alone on the rooftop terrace of the club, sipping her drink and enjoying the cool breeze. The city stretched out before her, a sea of twinkling lights.

“I thought I’d find you up here,” a voice said, breaking the silence.

She turned to see Daniel standing a few feet away, his hands shoved into his pockets. He looked at her with an intensity that made her pulse quicken.

“You’ve changed,” he said simply.

Sofia shrugged, tilting her head. “So have you.”

He stepped closer, his eyes searching hers. “I was an idiot back then. I never noticed what was right in front of me.”

She felt a flash of anger and something else—something that felt a lot like hope. “You noticed my sister.”

He winced, nodding. “I did. And I was wrong.”

Before she could respond, he closed the distance between them, his lips crashing against hers. The kiss was sudden, heated, full of pent-up tension. For a second, Sofia froze, caught off guard by the intensity of it. Then she melted into him, her fingers tangling in his hair as she kissed him back just as fiercely.

When they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathing heavily, their foreheads pressed together.

“Why now?” she whispered, her voice trembling with a mix of anger and desire.

“Because now I see you,” he murmured, his thumb brushing against her cheek. “And I can’t look away.”

Sofia pulled back, her heart pounding in her chest. “Maybe you’re too late, Daniel.”

With that, she turned and walked away, leaving him standing alone on the terrace, staring after her like a man who had just lost everything he didn’t even know he wanted.
