Brewing Bigger Dreams
Maya stood in front of the empty storefront, her fingers curled around a warm latte as she squinted at the “Coming Soon: Brewed Bliss – Second Location!” sign taped to the window. The words filled her with equal parts excitement and terror.
“This is really happening,” she murmured, half to herself, half to Leo, who stood beside her with his usual easygoing grin.
Leo bumped his shoulder against hers. “You say that like we accidentally signed a lease instead of spending months planning this.”
“I mean… it still doesn’t feel real,” Maya admitted. “What if we’re making a mistake? What if people don’t like the second location as much as the first?”
Leo took a slow sip of his coffee before answering. “What if they love it even more?”
Maya sighed. She wanted to believe that, but doubt nagged at her. The original Brewed Bliss had been their little dream come true—a cozy café with warm lighting, mismatched mugs, and a menu full of Maya’s creative coffee blends. It was the kind of place where regulars greeted each other like family and newcomers stayed for hours, drawn in by the scent of fresh espresso and buttery pastries. The walls had seen laughter, tears, first dates, and even a couple of surprise marriage proposals.
But a second location? That was new territory.
Before she could overthink herself into oblivion, Lily came bounding toward them, nearly spilling her iced lemonade. The bright yellow drink sloshed dangerously close to the rim as she waved.
“I can’t believe my best friend is basically a coffee mogul now,” Lily teased, giving Maya a playful nudge. “First, a second café. Next, world domination.”
Maya snorted. “Let’s just survive this first, okay?”
Leo stretched his arms overhead. “Survival sounds dramatic. I’d say ‘flourish.’”
“Flourishing is for flowers,” Maya countered. “I just want to get through opening week without a disaster.”
Leo smirked. “You say that like we aren’t magnets for chaos.”
Before Maya could argue, her phone buzzed. A message from the city office flashed across the screen. “Permit approval for Brewed Bliss (Second Location) is delayed. Further review required.”
Maya groaned. “And there it is. Disaster, right on schedule.”
Leo peeked over her shoulder, then casually shrugged. “Alright, small hiccup. We’ll handle it.”
Lily waved her lemonade dramatically. “You know what this calls for? A stress-busting celebration. Drinks at my place. And by drinks, I mean lemonade.”
Maya laughed despite herself. “Fine. But only if you let me spike mine with coffee.”
Later that afternoon, they gathered in Lily’s apartment, which was as chaotic and vibrant as its owner. String lights zigzagged across the ceiling, and half-finished art projects cluttered the table. The air smelled faintly of vanilla candles and citrus.
Leo lounged comfortably on the couch, sipping from a mason jar of lemonade, while Maya paced.
“Okay,” she began, listing things off on her fingers. “We have the interior mostly planned. The espresso machines are on backorder but should arrive next week. The supply chain is cooperating—for now. But without that permit, we can’t start construction.”
Lily flopped dramatically across the armchair. “Have you considered the tried-and-true method of bribing people with free coffee?”
“I’m pretty sure that’s illegal,” Maya deadpanned.
“Only if you get caught,” Lily said with a wink.
Leo grinned. “As charming as that idea is, I think we should stick to legal methods. I’ll call the city office tomorrow and see if we can get an update.”
Maya sighed, finally sinking onto the couch. “This whole second-location thing is supposed to be exciting. Why does it feel like we’re inviting stress into our lives?”
“Because you are,” Lily said cheerfully. “But in a fun, ambitious way.”
Leo nodded. “Look, we knew expanding would come with challenges. But we’re not doing this alone. We’ve got a great team, and most importantly…” He tilted his head toward Maya. “We’ve got each other.”
Maya’s heart softened. Even after all the ups and downs, Leo always found a way to ground her.
“Well,” she said, lifting her lemonade glass like a toast, “here’s to chaos, caffeine, and whatever else comes our way.”
They clinked glasses, laughter bubbling between them.
The next morning, Maya was back at the original Brewed Bliss, the comforting hum of the espresso machines filling the air. The café was its usual lively self — regulars chatting by the windows, a student hunched over a laptop, and the unmistakable scent of vanilla lattes mingling with freshly baked pastries.
“Morning, boss,” called Emily, one of their longest-serving baristas. She handed Maya a cup of black coffee with a mischievous grin. “No fancy drinks today. Just the hard stuff.”
“Perfect,” Maya said, taking a grateful sip. “Anything I should know?”
“Well, Mrs. Jenkins tried to convince us to add oat milk to her mocha instead of regular milk, but she also insisted she’s ‘allergic to trends,’ so that was a fun conversation.”
Maya laughed. “Classic.”
Just as she settled into the rhythm of the café, Leo walked in, phone pressed to his ear. His brow furrowed, and Maya’s stomach tightened.
“Good news?” she asked as he hung up.
“Not exactly.” Leo rubbed the back of his neck. “They’re still reviewing our permit. Something about needing additional documentation.”
Maya’s pulse quickened. “We gave them everything they asked for.”
“I know,” Leo said gently. “But we’ll figure it out.”
Before Maya could respond, a voice called out from the entrance. “Maya?”
She turned to see a tall, striking woman standing in the doorway. Dark hair cascaded over her shoulders, and she wore a tailored blazer that practically screamed confidence. Maya’s stomach dropped.
“Vanessa,” Leo said, his voice laced with surprise.
Vanessa’s lips curled into a knowing smile. “Leo. It’s been a while.”
Maya’s mind raced. Leo’s ex. The one he rarely talked about. And now she was standing in their café like a perfectly timed storm cloud.
“Hope I’m not interrupting,” Vanessa said smoothly. “I was just in town and thought I’d stop by. Congratulations on the second location, by the way. Impressive.”
Maya forced a smile, though her fingers tightened around her coffee cup. “Thanks. We’re excited.”
“I’m sure you are.” Vanessa’s eyes flickered between Maya and Leo, lingering just a second too long. “It’s good to see you, Leo.”
“You too,” Leo said, though there was an undeniable stiffness to his voice.
The encounter lasted only a minute longer, but it left an awkward silence in its wake.
“Well,” Maya said, clearing her throat, “that was… unexpected.”
Leo nodded. “Yeah.”
And just like that, the cozy comfort of the café felt a little less warm.
