More Work
TV is playing loudly as I slurp up my Lucky Charms.
".. Boyd Mackie had a devasting loss tonight. He missed 3 goals and only has one assist tonight. Do you think the king still got it? or does he need to retire?" The men on ESPN always doubt the Blue Fins hockey team. The Tv pans to another old man in a suit.
"Listen, he has had a good run, but as a 35-year-old with two championships. I think it is a good time to retire..." I slam the remote down, turning off the TV. Everyone always talks about Boyd's age, but he still got it! My father and I loved watching the Blue Fins. Every time we could, we went to a game. Those games are my most fondest memories of my dad. My train of thought was cut off by my phone ringing and my bosses photo popping up. I quickly answered.
"Hey Linda," I can hear a vacuum behind her.
"Hey Angela, I got some good and bad news for you."
"Oh god, what is it?" My heart sinks I cant be fired right now. I wont be able to afford nursing school
" The good news is the Blue Fins Hockey team hired us to be their cleaning service. The bad news is that is double work for us and I don't have enough staff. Can you please pick up some more shifts next week?" she emphasized her please, and I knew she meant it. She's not a woman that says please often.
"Oh, thank god, sure anything you need. I thought I was getting laid off." Being a maid sucks but they are flexible so it works with my nursing clinical hours.
"No, absolutely not, I'll fire amy before I fire you." We both laugh; she's an old friend of my father's. I love working with her she makes cleaning fun, I dont know how she does but she does.
"Speaking of Amy, Do you know what she did?" Here she goes; she's such a gossip. I put the phone on speaker while I wash out my cereal bowl. " I got a call from an account saying she was stealing their bottles."
"oh wow," I add.
"I tried to deny it, but they sent me an email with a video of her mopping and taking swigs out of a Tito's bottle. I was so shocked! I told them I would fire her, but I'm just going to switch maids on them. Can you believe that?" Linda is still vacuuming.
"With Amy? Anything is possible." I laugh with her. Amy is really a lost. She only has a job because Linda knows her mom. I hope she goes to rehab soon to deal with her alcoholism.
"Alright, well let me let you go. I just wanted to say good luck with your clinicals today! See you tonight at the stadium. I'll email you the shifts. Let me know what you can do. "
"Thanks, linda, have a good night."
Talking to Linda reminds me of my dad. She's so full of life. When I lost my dad 6 months ago to a heart attack, she looked out for me and made sure I finished nursing school. Now, I am in my last semester, I just need to finish my clinical hours and take my exam, and then I will be a certified nurse.
My day officially starts after my Lucky charms. Usually, I dont take calls until I have breakfast, but I always answer for Linda. I change into my Lego Batman scrubs, and I get my bags ready. My first bag is my nursing bag with my supplies and notebooks, and the other is my maid supplies full of sponges and solutions. Oh the life of a nursing student by day and a maid by night. My life is so enchanting. A real life cinderella. I throw up my standard nurse bun and reading glasses. My black messy hair falls around my narrow face and my brown eyes dim behind my bold glasses. I never wear makeup, but maybe I should start after seeing my under-eye bags double during these clinical hours. My phone chirps again, and ESPN news posted about the Blue Fins.
Boyd Mackie is taking a health leave return date TBD.
Ugh. that sucks. He's my favorite player. I want him to do well and I know he's under a lot of pressure to bring us a ring. I hope the organization treats him better; he's just one guy, and it takes a whole team. My dad would be proud of him for doing his best.
Climbing into my beat-up old 2012 Toyota Corolla, I make it to the hospital safely. My home away from home. I will be here from 7-7 today shadowing on the pediatric floor for the week, and then from 8-12, I'll be doing my night shift cleaning at the Blue Fins Stadium. Sipping some coffee from my canister, I pray for a smooth day.
My phone chirps again, and Linda emailed me the extra shifts that are open, and I signed up for all the night shifts. As a student, I don't get paid, so these extra shifts will be nice to catch up on some bills.
