Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Promises

I never realized how surreal it would feel to stand here, about to walk down the aisle toward the man I had chosen, the man I was certain I was meant to spend forever with. There was no hesitation in my heart, no lingering doubts, only the steady conviction that Kael love me just as fiercely as I love him. That he wanted this as much as I did. That we were making the right choice.

I must have been staring too intently because I saw the exact moment his brow furrowed, concern flickering across his sharp features. His body tensed, like he was about to step forward, to close the distance between us himself. It was only then that I realized-I had frozen in place the moment the doors opened, revealing me to him.

The thought nearly made me laugh.

Shaking off my hesitation, I took a decisive step forward, my gaze never leaving his. The moment I moved, his shoulders relaxed, his expression shifting, softening. His face lit up with something indescribable. If I didn’t know him so well - if I weren’t trained to read the subtlest of human gestures - I might have missed it. The way his fingers twitched, the barely contained impatience in his stance. He wanted to run to me.

The thought sent warmth flooding through my chest.

In response, I quickened my pace, and before I knew it, I was there, standing before him.

I had no father to give me away, no family to place my hand in his. But I never needed one. I had survived, and thrived, on my own. I had gotten myself here, to this moment, to him. And so, I lifted my own hand, placing it in his, sealing my present and future with him.

The instant his fingers curled around mine, a strange energy thrummed between us, electric and undeniable. A shiver ran through me, mirrored in his sharp intake of breath. It was an unusual enough of a sensation that I briefly paused, taken aback by the extremely realistic phenomenon. But then his grip on my hand tightened, warm and grounding, pulling me back from my thoughts. Impulsively, I leaned in and brushed a quick kiss against his cheek.

It was as much for himm as it was for me.

“Sorry for the delay, handsome,” I whispered.

An almost imperceptible laughter rippled through the small gathering, but I barely noticed. His exasperated yet amused expression was too captivating. Then, in an uncharacteristic move, he leaned in too and gently nuzzled my cheek, his lips brushing my temple. My heart clenched.

I might have kissed him again right then and there if not for the amused but patient presence of the priest standing before us.

Right. The wedding. Our wedding.Focus.

As if reading my thoughts, Kael whispered, “We should probably get married first.” His tone was affectionate, eyes bright in excitement and barely there desire. His breath warming my skin.

We turned to the priest in unison, both of us ready.

“Please be seated,” the priest said, smiling as the small gathering of guests settled. “We are gathered here today to witness the sacred union of Kael Smith and Arianna Evendyl...”

I wasn’t listening. Not really.

My entire focus was on Kael - on the way his piercing gray eyes held mine, unwavering, unshakable. I had always admired his intensity, the quiet steel beneath his calm exterior, but now... now that sharpness was softened by something else. Devotion.

He looked at me like I was his world. And I knew, without a doubt, that I felt the same.

I left the life of danger behind, of being constantly on alert at all times, the position and respect I earned painstakingly in a field dominated by men. I disregarded my superiors concerns, almost going MIA to avoid being thrown a last mission just to be here with him. I gave up all that I had accomplished to be his wife.

I absolutely have no regrets.

His fingers tightened around mine, grounding me again.

“Aria...” His voice was soft.

I blinked, suddenly realizing where we were in the ceremony. The vows.

“You blanked out, huh?” He murmured, his lips curving slightly.

I heard nothing from the guests. Or maybe I just didn’t care. My world had narrowed down to him.

I squeezed his hand in response, and he smiled.

“Me too,” he admitted. “I don’t know what to say. I’m overwhelmed. At finding you. At having you. At knowing you love me.” His voice was thick with emotion, his gray eyes turning silver in the light. “I’m extremely lucky.”

I felt my lips curve, felt warmth bloom in my chest.

“I found you,” he continued, voice steady despite the moisture gathering in his eyes. “Out of millions of people, I found you. My Heart Root. My love. My forever.”

A tear slipped down his cheek. He didn’t brush it away.

Kael rarely cried. In fact, even if he felt like crying he resists. He swallowed his pain, bore his burdens in silence. But today... today, he let go. Today, he let himself feel.

My throat tightened, my own eyes blurring with tears.

“I will never, ever stop loving you,” he vowed. “No matter what happens, know that you are mine, and I am yours. This is etched deep in my heart. It won’t ever fade. This is forever.”

The finality in his voice struck deep. There was a sense of reality, of sincerity in that vow. I felt it resonate. I know his commitment to the words he had uttered.

Yet it also gave me a confusing sense of foreboding I could not understand.

I let out a shaky laugh, the tears involuntarily falling from my cheeks. It was both from trepidation at the odd feeling I got from him and at the devotion I could perceive from his oath. He reached out, wiping them away. His hand lingered against my skin, warm and steady. It instantly swept away the slight gloom that crept in my heart.

“You cheater,” I accused, half-laughing, half-swallowing a sob. “You made me cry.” We had a bet last night on who can remain composed to the end. Safe to say I lost.

Well, technically he did. He shed a tear first, but I’ll take this loss. I started crying before even speaking my vows.

He laughed, the sound vibrated in my chest, full of warmth. He looked as if he remembered that bet.

I had no eloquent words though, no prepared speech. My love for him was too vast to be contained in mere sentences, words too constrained for all to be told.

So I held onto him, grounding myself in the warmth of his touch, and spoke the only truth that mattered.

“I love you in all the ways I know, and in all the ways I will come to know. You’re right. This is final. I’m yours, and you are mine.”

Everything after that was a blur - our rings exchanged, the ceremony reaching its inevitable, beautiful end.

And then, finally, the words we had been waiting for.

“I now pronounce you husband and wife.”

A breathless pause.

“You may now kiss the bride.”

His lips met mine, and the world melted away.

This was forever.... or so I thought.
